A Winget dumper with Petter PH2 engine that was a cheap purchase because it was hard to start and had sat around for a while. Bought it to use at home on some projects and to save hire costs and many wheel barrow trips! So here's some footage of me trying to start it, use it and improve it somewhat. Also using it for it's intended purpose as the last big dumper we didn't get to see actually doing anything.

The ph2 is a legendary engine .The weak points are the Bryce injectors which are prone to sticking if left to stand for any length of time,They are cheap to get serviced,Also high hour engines lose compression,people used to just tip a bit of oil down the intake manifold to start them .The valve clearance needs to be checked and its so easy to do,this will help starting and the power output of the engine.Truely legendary engine.

You forgot that it sounded great too, like a proper old truck diesel engine. Good info there though, thanks!

@@jacksgarageworkshop The golden rule with the ph1 and ph2 is always check the oil before starting them as when the injectors go they leak diesel straight into the sump .This then destroys the engine as its not being lubricated properly.Other than that they run forever on very little fuel.

This was an interesting watch for me? I've got a 1970's ex-military aldrive 5000 with the same engine, this too is a pig to start! Now i have the valve clearances i'll be tinkering with the valves an decompression settings. All the best. Dave

When cutting down a rubber o-ring, join it back together with superglue.

I should try that, thought the superglue would be too brittle?

What a difference a service and valve adjust makes to the starting. Well done. One thing I have wanted for at least 15 years, is a single or double cylinder diesel engine. I have had petrol ones, but never a diesel. Just wanted one as a stationary engine to run a couple of tools from.
@jacksgarageworkshop

I have to say I was surprised how much new oil did for it, as the old oil didn’t seem too bad. And the valve adjustment was simply night and day better! Get yourself an old Lister or similar, cheap as chips for a single cylinder especially if you don’t choose a rare model.

@@jacksgarageworkshop If only I could find a single cylinder one cheap enough. I am not made of money for ones that get listed where I live and wanting way over hte value of them. I had a Suffolk Punch petrol engine off a lawnmower from the 50's once and sold it to someone in Scotland. I posted it with Hermes. Only cost around £7 to post. The fella was very chuffed with it as it was the higher cc one than he had on his mower. But for me, it wasnt as strong as a Lister. Easy to work on and repair though. The cost here in hte East Midlands are higher than London prices for a lot of stuff. If I had transport, I could travel 20 miles from here and get stuff less than half the price. lol

Hello from Canada - a bit of maintenance and some TLC brings it back a long way . Funny how maintenance seems to be at or near the bottom of the list

Hi! Yes strange people ignore maintenance and then have downtime on a machine because of it or just make their lives harder.

Got one of these, never knew who made it till now. Prob a bit older as it doesn't have the hinged 'lid' over the engine, just bolted at both ends and a heavy bastard, doesn't encourage valve adjustment !! It's always been a pig to start, despite a rebuilt engine, injectors and inj pumps. Difficult to get enough speed on the handle and maybe the flywheel just doesn't have enough weight? Got several similarly sized hand crank diesels which are easy to start, but the PH engine is famous for being difficult. I opted for the skip dived primary school chair welded onto the sprung base as a seat... :o)

Nice to hear from someone else who had one! This one did some good work for us. Does your cover pivot if you loosen the rear bolts and remove the front ones and the rear bolts become a pivot perhaps? The improvement after valve adjustment on this was amazing, worth the effort. Also easy start is cheap enough….don’t hurt your shoulders for the sake of it.
@innleadair
@innleadair 8 ай бұрын
Nope, can't pivot it, need to lift the whole seat and engine cover straight up to remove it. Think I'll add the hinge setup at some point, looks simple... :o)@@jacksgarageworkshop

Jack, at 43:00, I have a set of Hazet offset spanners like you use, but recently picked up several USA made offset as well. I got both sets at scrap yards not far from me, here in the States. The Hazet are metric, while the others are imperial sizes. Not everyone has this privilege. It looks as though you've gotten a nice dumper for a decent price. I wish you well in your endeavors.

Harry are a good brand, keep hold of those! This thing was all imperial sizes and I have a huge number of imperial spanners but not any full sets I don’t think, I mostly work on metric stuff anyway, it’s a real ‘rummage in the imperial drawer’ though when I need one. Thanks for watching!

Hi Alan, saw your other comment too - used one 45 years ago! Wow. I got this cheap, with transport cost maybe £650, sold for a shade over £1000 I think. So a little profit for my time and also got the use of it while I owned it.
