Awesome video! I'm wondering what your opinion would be about using a similar 110VAC/9VDC isolated module like that as pedal power in a custom pedal board? Too much noise being SMPS vs a linear regulated supply?

You do excellent work. I’m not a Bluetooth fan, but seeing this great console restored has been very enjoyable. I think you made a great choice with the Technics table. Easy to service, and PMount cartridges will likely be available, with many options, for many years to come.

Again, Brad, another project nicely done. I like the way you are advocating the dovetailing of digital technology with older models; it sort of sidesteps the term 'obsolete', as it allows the best current utilization of both. I think we'd all be better off to view more projects along these lines...IMHO.

Here's the thing...if the latest generation can't find an excuse to spend money revamping these old consoles, if they can't find a good reason to keep them in their homes and apartments, taking up space they could otherwise use for stashing their tidepods or Apple products, we'll ensure all this stuff ends up at the dump.

On the one hand, I begrudgingly agree, with the caveat that I wish they could appreciate tube technology on its own merits, but I know that's too much to ask. On the other hand, I can see how this marriage could well be utilized in newer projects, and to that end, it piques my interest...keep up the good work.

"EN" is usually for "ENABLE", which you could use to power the device on and off, instead of using a switch on the power supply. The retrofitting of a Bluetooth module in this stereo reminded me of Retro Radio Farm's work. They restore old radios to working order, and when you buy them, you have an option to have Bluetooth added to it. I'm tempted to do this with my mono portable turntable.

TP4 cartridge....must be a Technics turntable. That's a hell of a lot easier on records than the original TT. Great video. I use old phone chargers for isolated power supplies for Bluetooth modules, but at just a couple of bucks, your solution make a lot of sense.

Excellent! Thank you. I've got a similar BT board coming in. I looked to make sure it's not an amplified BT board though, My plan is this. I'm wiring the BT L/R to my reel to reel preamp input lines and that's it. Hopefully the recorder can then record what I send from my phone and record to tape, or just listen to the paused recording as it's passed through the preamp. And extending the LED to a front panel area, hopefully there is an old chassis screw I can replace with the led? But should look cool. But I've first gotta recap and replace the 8 transistors on the preamp, as there 40 years old now. Heads look like new. Akai 4000 DS reel to reel

This is really cool. I have what you call a console, we call it a "Radiogram" here in England. Mine is an old HMV model, it was my great uncles, then my grandmothers, it's just something that was always there. The lid hasn't been opened in 20 years and it's been used as a stand for a 1990s HiFi system since 1994. There's probably one of those "yo dawg, I put a hifi on yo hifi because I hear you like hifi" memes in there somewhere :D

I am converting a 1937 Philco AM radio to be a blue tooth speaker and I am just going to sell the tube chassis and electronics to someone that needs it for their radio and use a Bluetooth receiver and little solid state amp board. The Bluetooth board is from Parts express (more expensive but no soldering required) and it runs on 12 volts (I pick up the 12 volt wall wart power supplies from my local church operated second hand store for 20 cents each, lol.) The link won't work for whatever reason but go to Parts Express and search for Sure Electronics AA-AB41136 Bluetooth 4.0 Audio Receiver Board aptX +EDR 12 VDC It has RCA jacks for the out put and screw terminals for the power. Cool video thanks for sharing!

@TheGuitologist

Yes, but you will have to do something to mitigate noise and add a voltage regulator. Basically you'll have to build a small circuit with regulator and some filtering. The thing here was for me, I was already ordering the bluetooth modules so I figured I'd try out these cheap 5V supplies rather than spending time building circuits. It's hard to justify not spending the $2.40. My time is worth more than that.

Listening to vinyl from the turntable through Bluetooth removes the tube amplifier from the audio path. Perhaps the ability to pipe vinyl audio to Bluetooth headphones would be a worthy cause. For people (like me) who consider the tube amplifier to be the most desirable piece of technology in this console, though, allowing people to play their iPhones or other sources through the tube amplifier is the obvious choice. I suspect adding a Bluetooth sending unit might require less easily-reversible modifications to the console in order to intercept audio headed to the amplifier and sent it instead to the Bluetooth unit. Then there would be the consideration that you would be running the tubes for hours without actually using them...
@IPushHard
@IPushHard 6 жыл бұрын
Well gents, I DERPED. Yeah, its a receiver. I got that from the video. Derp. But I'm not understanding this second reply. Why would the tubes be removed from the audio path if transmitting Blue tooth audio. Couldnt the transmitter be integrated somewhere near the consoles audio out?...thus after the tubes? ...and as far as having the tubes on for hours? ...naw. Just have everything programmed to shut off after xxxx amount of time... via Blue tooth of course. That last part was a joke. : )

Adam Payne I keep thinking all the different ways a piece of junk fiber optics cable (an old SPDIF cable or something) could be used to pipe that light to where it’s visible by the user. You could drill the smallest hole, nearly invisible when it’s not lit up.

beautiful, however you didn't say why the one channel was so much lower in volume and how you fixed it...
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 6 жыл бұрын
It was fixed when I rewired the output for stereo. The mismatch was due to the original wiring of the output from the factory. RCA intended you to buy the second extension speaker cabinet for full functionality, apparently.
@gavincurtis
@gavincurtis 6 жыл бұрын
RCA engineers were bell ends for thinking that way. Should have been stereo in the single cabinet, when you expanded the system, then the switch would make the speakers mono in that cabinet and run the other channel to the extension cabinet. What a waste of that stereo amp as I bet this was a very expensive system, yet most operated in mono, even with stereo records.
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 6 жыл бұрын
I think it was an economic decision. When the purchaser bought just the one unit without the extension cab, everything sounded great...so long as they were playing the old mono records. The minute they tried a new stereo record, they quickly discovered they needed the extension cabinet. CHA-CHING! $$$$

Sure but when the source is vinyl it's gonna require some physical engineering to get it to be able to pause, ie by lifting the tone arm. I'm sure bluetooth could handle the command, but something has to be there to act on it. I'm sure someone will bring out a bluetooth deck sooner or later, but it will probably be a bit crap as they seem to be now.

Have you considered 3d printing parts? Like for the turntable, the dry and cracked rubber parts could be scanned with a 3d scanner then printed using long lasting plastics and rubber like filaments. while expensive, I imagine the investment of a printer and a scanner would be made up if you used it enough.

Joe Montgomery I thought the principle which is bringing 3D printing prices down to affordable levels for regular people was growing sales volumes, allowing economics of scale, along with the number of different brands competing for market share keeps pushing the price lower and lower. As cool as what you describe would be (and I hope we get there someday), I don’t think most people really appreciate all the technical considerations taken into account to successfully produce a physical part which works and has a decent lifespan. Especially when the required properties are more than just shape and rigidity (such as the amount of grip and the amount of elasticity needed for a replacement pinch roller). Also some of these wheels are of the size and weight that I would have serious concern how the 3D printed parts I come in contact with (which are virtually weightless in comparison) would perform, when weight and inertia-influenced performance would have to be so different. When a part can do its job properly by simply being reasonably rigid and being a certain shape, the exact plastic you reproduce it with isn’t as critical. But when a part has to be a certain strength, a certain shape, with a certain amount of grip, AND with a certain amount of elasticity, I don’t know that we have even invented materials that can be sent through a 3D printer and still be strong, bouncy, AND elastic. Surely such a technology would be protected by patents, keeping its price out of the reach of dabblers for decades.

Not entirely sure. Had something to do with the way the output was wired from the factory. Rewiring the output in just straight up stereo with the two speaker pairs in this one cabinet solved the issue.

I thought the factory wiring for speaker output looked retarded. It was the pioneering days of stereo though

They obviously wanted to sell you the other speaker cab for full stereo functionality. They figured you'd never notice the lack of stereo if you were using Mono records anyway.

The Guitologist I had a feeling... any time new consumer technology is implemented in a way that makes zero sense from a technical perspective, it almost always has to do with driving sales.

So what did you do, just come off the 2 output transformers for left/right and bypass averything after the transformers ?

Yeah. Definitely the way to go. Otherwise, you end up with something akin to spark plug noise in an old car.

Why go through all this complicated stuff. Just by a Bluetooth adapter with its own power cord and rca cord and just plug the rca cable into left and right Aux iput in the old amp. That’s it!

LOL.. But if you want REAL HI-FI.. Very nice addition Brad.!! AA++++. Simple Blue Tooth installation.!! This RCA Amp circuit was not built correctly on the output to get the STEREO on the stock 4 speakers.. What a huge failure by RCA. You need an external speaker to get True Stereo or just get Brad to wire it correctly..!!
