CHEAP Golf Rangefinder vs EXPENSIVE - On Course Test

Should you buy a cheap golf laser Rangefinder, or should you go with an Expensive one?? That's the question I wanted to answer so I bought the budget Aofar GX-2S and the top of the range Bushnell Tour V5 Shift and I compared them out on the golf course.

Both the laser rangefinders have slope, jolt and flag lock, so is the massive price difference worth it? It's time to decide which one you should buy

Hi Kevin nice to see you back on the course with outdoor reviews. I have a Bushnell range finder albeit approx 6yrs old works fine and see no reason to change even if i were to damage it i would always look towards a premium brand because they operate pretty flawlessly.

I use an Apple Watch to get main yardages but it doesn’t give exact yardage since pin location always changes. That’s why I was looking into a cheaper range finder for the approach shots. Another big thing I wish you tested was bunker and hazard yardages. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet on one because I’m not sure how well a cheaper one would do on targeting bunkers. That’s another reason on choosing a range finder. It’s always a hassle to pull a phone out to check an app since I don’t like playing with my phone in my pocket. Nonetheless it was still a great comparison.

I’ve not had too many problems with using the cheaper rangefinder for targeting bunkers, but it does depending on the conditions….works better when the weather is good. In line with he results of the video. The more expensive rangefinder is more accurate and faster the lancer the distance being measured

Good review video as I never knew how these operate. As a high handicap golfer I would use my skydroid gps app on my phone (which cost me £3) and the Aofar when close.

A well done review. My recent experience with the Tour V5, has been a huge disappointment with both the product and customer service. The Tour V5 worked well until I replaced the original battery. It did not work after that. I contacted Bushnell customer Service, which was not easy, and after a discussion of problems Customer Service offered to give me 25% off on a new one. They offered this knowing the device was less than a year old and functioning until the battery died. Bushnell does not back this product. This is planned obsolescence. $300 US dollars is way too much money for a device that fails in this manner and has such a poor backing (product confidence) from the manufacturer. They may have been good at one time, but based on this experience I won't be purchasing Bushnell products any longer.

Thanks for watching Chris. Oh wow I’m not sure why they wouldn’t replace the unit if it’s less than a year old? An experience like that can put you off a brand for life for sure.

Good review. Personally I would get really frustrated if it couldn’t select target from 160 yards in, or it took 4 attempts. If you want to get around in 4hrs get the Bushnell, if you want to spend 5hrs get the Aofar.

This is the reason I'm looking to upgrade. Had a Bushnell which broke, went for a cheap model off Amazon and it's a horrid experience.

Great review Kev, thanks. I don’t have one of these and I’ve been humming and hawing for literally years ! Like most people, I tend to play the same course most weeks so my Garmin watch along with knowing the course is enough for my level of golf. However when I do play somewhere else I think I’d use a laser as much for hazards as for pins. (How far to the bunker or dogleg or water etc etc) I’m not going to spend £300+ on one ! (That’s a new driver or Scotty Cameron !!!) but thinking of the Inesis from Decathlon at £129. You used this one ?

Hi Guy I enjoyed your Video 👍thinking you could use a bit more practice, I use a Garmin watch and use it mainly from a 100yards and in, I like to be accurate with my Wedges, and don’t think the slope info will help playing most of my golf at Sheerness which is pretty flat & and the biggest variable is the wind, it’s useful to know the distance’s to carry bunkers or ditches, but when I have used range finders I am not confident I have selected the right distance to hazard’s or pins (any tips) or am I am just too old to learn, Thanks Dickey 9hcp 75year Senior Golfer

Thanks so much for watching and sharing Dickie! I can use more practice for sure! If I had the time I'd love to practice more and get the handicap down from 18, but family comes first 😎 My personal preference is normally a gps, but sometime I find myself using a rangefinder as well, it may sound odd but it can give me more confidence sometimes out on the course, I feel more focussed when using a rangefinder. I know that's all in the mind, but there you go. Stay safe and play well Dickie!

Off topic but would you have any tips on how to get the release date of Nikes golf shoes. I was after the black Air Zoom Victory 2 shoe. Sold out in my size already. Have joined the Nike membership but missed out a few times now. 😕😕😕

That sucks, sorry John, I saw they only just dropped today. My advice would be to send some DM's to Funcation 18, Golfposer and TrendyGolfer to see if they can give you a date for when they're going to get stock. Also, I've give Swoosh Golfer (this was the first person I saw announcing the black VT2 dropped in the UK today) and Swoosh Staff a follow on Instagram as they have some great info

So why would I want to know how far 400+ yards is from the tee? You plan on selecting the right club from there ? It sounds like you get what you spend eh?

Fair point and I could’ve have made it clear in the video, but I wanted to test 400y given they say they can work up to that kind of distance…so I wanted to test it. Yes it’s fair to say you pay for what you get, but equally if you’re an social golfer on a budget, the cheaper £100 unit could be a viable option and not a total waste of money

Bushnell is definitely better. You pay the extra money to not buy another one a year later. I see bags with Bushnells years old so they stand the test of time in all weather. I never see an old cheap rangefinder on a bag.

Very fair point, the Bushnell is a lot more solid and I'd expect far superior build quality.
