Everyone wants a cheap hot rod right? Well the name brand/popular year cars are hard to find and extremely pricey. I wanted to do a build series on a CHEAP, off year car. This allows anyone to dip their toes in the car world before re mortgaging the house.

Yeah all the really famous popular cars have all been bought up, restored, customized, whatever.... Then the trucks got snatched up, then they got around to the four doors and wagons, now the late 70s and 80s stuff is getting got, even the less popular stuff that can be made into something is getting gone. I started looking for a 70s Corolla because they make cool little Japanese sports cars with a little suspension work and wheels they look and handle great along with plenty of room for performance in those 4 cylinders. Now that stuff is getting gone too, prices on them is insane, what was a $500 car in the early 2000 is now $5000

Other than replacing what needs to be and a bit of a tune-up on the 6 banger I wouldn't change a damn thing. Nothing wrong with having a reliable cruiser, not everything has to have 500 horsepower to be fun. I mean it doesn't hurt, but this thing would be a great road trip rig as is. I'd love to find something like this, get some friends together and take a trip down to Speed Week in August.

100% agree. There's too much fun to be had with a reliable "old car". I did a 64 Chevy II 4 door in the late 90s. Rebilt the 230, left the powerglide and drums on it and drove it every day. An outfit named Kanter Auto Parts sold kits mail order (remember that) a complete front end kit and a brake kit and it was good to go. $1500 total spent, 10 years and 70k miles of fun.

A good running straight 6 will take you anywhere you want to go. We had a Biscayne my parents bought new in 67 was still running strong in the 80s till it got rear-ended. My mom sold it for 80 bucks to a guy who made a hunting buggy out of it for all I know it might still be out there.

I appreciate what you are saying! I've been a hot rodder since the early 70's, and watched prices go totally nuts. I've belonged to various car clubs in the past, where members looked down on 4-door or 'other' makes....I've known some young couples with limited funds, but wanted to have fun in a unique car, but none of the $$$ to step into a big-engine car with all the chrome ---- I go out of my way to applaud them,...that 4 door is really special to them...that's what it's all about. If it's a 4-door or basic car ''and'' available, at a good price, go for it!!! There is definately a 'bonus' to 4 doors, with a family, or getting a bit stiff in middle-age. Hot rodding is what each person makes of it!!! Thank you for your insight on this very important matter!!!

Dan-100 percent agree. I've had 100's of cars and lots of stuff I shouldn't have sold. I always wanted a '68 Dodge Charger 440 R/T-like the Bullitt car. But in 2022-I bought a '73 Imperial LeBaron 4 door hardtop with the power vent windows. Why? The front end is BADASS-the rear lights are awesome,it's rare,HUGE,comfortable-and has a 440-and the best part? I'll be the only one at the car show or cruise night with one.

This the perfect entry-level hot rod---get everything working properly, do a few sheet metal repairs, a little bit of interior work, some Black Trem-Clad on the underside, patch in and buff the paint, new windshield, Cheap exhaust. You'll be into it for 2 grand, and easily double your money (if you don't count your labor and gas to get it home)

My brother bought a 1966 four door Biscayne back around 1970 or so. It was the car that started my love affair with the Bow Tie cars. It was special ordered by a doctor and he bought it as a trade in from a dealership. What was under the hood made it special. A 375hp 396 with a TH400 and posi rear end. The car screamed! He took off the 396 badges and replaced them with 283 emblems, and then went on to win a lot of street races. I still have one of the 396 emblems.

I grabbed my 76 Sedan DeVille two years ago for $3200. Runs great. Paint is shot but she's 500 powered with flawless chrome and turns heads constantly. Battleship Hotrod. As for buying out of town, 1000% agree! The caddy was almost literally in my back yard. However, I just bought a big block Chevy pickup for $1400 that was an hour and a half into banjo country. No rust, blue on blue, excellent interior, extended cab with overdrive and a 454. Drove it home flawlessly.

That’s a great score. Here’s my 2 cents: * The world has enough 4 door to 2 door conversions. Leave the doors alone * KZfaq is very short on 6 Cyl content. Either trick out the stock motor, or build up a GM 292 that will sit right in its place.

Do something REALLY different with it and make it a 3 door, a 2 door sedan on the driver's side and leave the 4 door sedan on the drinker's side. Steelies and dog dishes required, no trim rings. Then put a T5 behind that 6 banger and have fun with it. I'd give my left lugnut for something like that!

Well I’ll tell you a few things wrong, doesn’t make much power, doesn’t sound as good as a 350, and not nearly as much aftermarket support. No reason for me to keep the straight 6 unless I’m daily driving the car or keeping it original

The good thing about these big old 4 doors. Ease of access! Since many of us in the hobby have passed our skinny nimble spring rooster years, the open rear portal and the shorter front doors make entry and exit a whole lot easier than those long wide two doors. There is a reason new 2 door family cars no longer exist.

One of the things that make these cars attractive is the base models were decanted on chrome trim. If you have noticed, it’s a thing people do with old cars. They remove the “extra” trim for a cleaner look. So the base cars have the more modern cool look.

One of the most fun cars I’ve had was my 70 Impala 4 door hoopty lowrider on air ride. So much fun! I also had a 67 Biscayne 427 4 speed I bought at an estate sale cheap 25 years ago. Had it for about 5-6 months and sold it for $15k many times what I paid for it. The same car showed up for sale last year and went for $120k 🤦‍♂️ If the 2door post conversion is possible go for it. There’s nothing tougher than a 2 dr post , big block, Biscayne. Even if it stays 4 door doing a big block with a 4 speed and keeping the bench seat interior would be cool AF

I think the 2-door obsession with old American cars spilled in to the UK many years ago, but I prefer UK 4-door saloons because most UK 2 and 4 door cars share the same shell. I have just bought my first American car - a 73 Scamp slant 6 and I love it. I would build the Biscayne as is Dan - you have ALL V8 cars and ALL 2 door cars. Nowadays a 60s 70s car looks cool, regardless of the size of the engine or the number of doors. 😉

I would go to a Tremec 5 speed, or, at least a Turbo 350 with a lock-up converter, power brakes, disc up front, Fenton dual exhaust manifolds with two pipes right to the back, perhaps a two barrel carburetor, rear door outside handle delete, pound out the dents, repair rust damage, polish the paint and drive it. Enjoy.

I wouldn’t change the car at all. Drive it as it is, and when you get bored with it, move it on to someone new to the hobby. Maybe if a young local kid is looking to get into it, you could be a sort of mentor. I think guys like you have a lot to pass on to the next gen of hot rodders. Hot Rods used to be all about taking what you had, and making it better/ faster with whatever you could find . I was reading some comments on the H.A.M.B site just the other day about how in some peoples eyes, the car scene has become too “cookie cutter”. Cars like this Biscayne are the way forward. Something different, done differently. Great vid as usual.👍👍

1957 Pontiac 4 door hardtop enigma. Bought new in state. I'm the third owner. Car is titled (a lot aren't but that's another issue). Previous owner used it for a work car before deciding to hop it up a bit. Had the mill machined and rebuilt, shot the car in shit-brown primer then parked it for almost 30 years before I got it. Mostly solid. And of course it runs like new. Two issues I'm working on, one you didn't cover: wiring (old cars are notorious for having wiring issues and ppl need to take care. Rodents can make a mess under your dash). The other is relocating the master cylinder from beneath the floor up to the firewall. Then she'll be close to road worthy. It even came with vintage old Cragars and nos tires that were never on the road.

My sons first car is a 4 litre Barra Ford Falcon. Everyone has to tell him it must use alot of fuel. Actually the three sets of back tires in the first month were expensive, but he discovered if he drove sensibly, even around town, mileage was surprisingly good. I had told him this next bit, but he didn't quite get it. Someone at work told him how much they spent on cigarettes and off course alcohol comes with it. He now wants to build a ute with a bigblock because its still heaps cheaper than a habit that will kill you. You know that a BB will end up in it.

If you've never had a slightly hopped-up 6cyl you're missing out on something you might dig. Grind out the one barrel manifold and put a 2bbl on it, a 3" exhaust with a decent muffler, a header if you're into it and you have something that sounds great, is torquey and gets good mileage. If you want more, find a used head cheap, have it cut for a compression bump, port match it, a 4 angle valve job and you've spent $300. It's like a pitbike compared to a Hyabusa but even the 'Busa jockey's love pitbikes

Looking forward to the Biscayne restoration, Dan. I'd like to see the engine cleaned up and rebuilt. That's a pretty solid engine and you can get a lot of power out of it just by adding double y headers, an Offenhouser aluminum intake, 4 barrel carb and an MSD ignition. You could maybe pull the head and clean up the valves, add hardened seats, new springs and rockers?- Balance the crank and pistons, etc. The body is pretty clean and you can handle welding new patch panels. A floor shifter would look nice, steering wheel and a dash pad. Take the hydraulic system out of the 47 and put it on the Biscayne, too, would look cool-a very nice low-rider! Can't wait to see this. Take care!

20 years ago I would have said keep the six bagger. But finding parts for a 6 cylinder can be a little spotty these days. So I don't think anyone would fault you for dropping in an LS. As far as the two-door four-door thing goes that argument's been around forever two door cooler for sure but you can't deny the convenience of four doors.

The other thing is that your car doesn't have to be "restored" or perfect. I also have a patina'd out-bone stock original 1973 Caprice Classic 2 door with a factory 454. You would be amazed how many people notice the "454" on the front fenders and stop to talk about it or check it out. Just enjoy the hobby and enjoy an old car. It's fun.

I remember my folks having a dark blue 66 4door hardtop. One cool car. Now if you can build a 2 door post car out of that. Way Cooler. I love those style cars. My folks were drivers. No going to movies or football games. We took long drives and ended up who knows where. Talk about a fun time with 3 kids n 2 adults.

Times change, I remember when 4 doors (and wagons) no matter how mint, were considered parts cars and not worth spending a nickle on. But, cool tin is becoming scarce and when you find it, big bucks. Try to find a remotely affordable '61 bubbletop or 66-67 Nova sport coupe project..ain't happening.. I'd like to see a 2 door conversion on the old biscayne, but I wonder how hard it would be to find a set of coupe doors?

4 doors were drinking cars or parts chasers back when. I used to take a verbal beating for driving a 64 Plymouth Fury wagon, even though it was the tow car for my race car. I can't see me building a 4 door but they can make good fixer up for fun transportation.

I got a '76 Valiant Custom sedan for free. The original owner, an older lady, did not want the car cut up for parts, flipped or such- it also helped that she is Tulalip and I am part Choctaw/Chickasaw Indian. Gave her my word and she gave me the car. Tax, tags & title set me back about $150. It was parked when the heater core & radiator started leaking. That was years back and at 88k miles, the car is solid and the interior plastic is perfect. Bad part? It is triple beige. It did get a new heater core, oil change and the HD cooling I grabbed out of an AC, V8, trailer package Arizona-original car I found in a junkyard years back. I kept quite a few parts from when I did a lot of junkyarding/buying/selling/trading. Short list- Formula S/340/A38 suspension. 12" rotor swap. 1 1/8" front bar. '70 vintage 340. A-833 OD gearbox (iron case). 8.75 rear-back-braced with 489 case 3.23 or 3.55 gears, have 2 sets. Power trunk release from a 5th Ave. '89 Gran Fury 🚔 120 amp Nippondenso alternator (and wiring) & Sanden compressor for the AC. XHD rear springs (not the Super Stocks for drag racing) with poly bushings & 7/8" rear sway bar. Vintage cop wheels with 60-series Bridgestone black walls with AMC wheel centers and a Kelsey-Hayes 2-piece forged spare off a '79 or '80 B/R-body. Is it the ultimate drag car? No. Is it the ultimate corner carver? No. Is it a much better car overall for the money? Yes. It will start in 20 degree or 100 degree weather. My dog can ride in it, no worries. Keeps up, handles & brakes in modern traffic. It's all perspective.

Totally agreed, Dan. I have had quite a number of cars, 2 door hardtops and even a few 4 door sedans. They actually all drive the same which is cool. Fun fact for me, I have a 68 Mustang built quite nicely, 347 4 speed yahdee dawdee do. It sits in my shop barely turning a couple hundred miles a year. I also have a decently redone, not nicely redone 76 F150 4x4 redone to totally stock. Guess which one I drive all the time. Why? Because it starts, runs and drives like it did out of the factory. So what am I saying? Just find a good car and make it drive so it’s fun and relaxing. People tend to relate better to the everyday cars than to the super rods. Enjoy!!

This car is a survivor . Fix what needs fixing to make it a solid driver . Don't make it a 2 door. Fix the rust and mechanical stuff . Get the seats reupholstered a new windshield. Drive it and enjoy it. Survivors are better than frame off really good restorations. The paint and line are to perfect or nor good enough. Survivors have doors hung by a guy that was hungover and trying not to crap his pants before break . They didn't come off the line with perfect gaps and glass smooth bodywork. They had dings and such they had laquer paint that were wet sanded to get the runs and orange peel out . No base coat clear paint. Restorations are like building a airplane quality control. Genuine parts ETC . No car sat on the assembly line waiting for months a PERFECT BUMPER finish My cousin a hardcore antique car guy . I remember him doing a bumper . He'd drive to a special guy in grand forks from Fargo and a week later pick it up take it Bach to Fargo each night he'd buff on it to get it glass perfect then take it back to grand forks for another layer of nickel or copper then back home for another week of buffing and back to grand forks repeat for more than a month that went on . He but show cars . In my opinion survivors are cooler . REAL not trailer queens.

Tune. Clean. Polish. Drive the wheels off.. I wouldn't change a thing.. just make a nice solid '66 Biscayne again - maybe add a nice head unit.. Otherwise take it back to about 1968 when someone was still lovin' that ride.

😅 In 88 I paid $100 bucks for Biscayne just like it, only thing wrong the muffler was blown out. I pulled up in the drive starred stripping good parts off to sale as my dad watched getting pissed off the whole time. 😠 I entered it in Savannah Oglethorpe Speedway 150 Lap Enduro race, won $2K💸 the six-cylinder never got hot as the V8s overheated falling off like flies 🏁🏆
