I bought second hand to get into the sport. Then took 12 months to find the new bike that I wanted. Trek Domane SL7 di2 ultegra. Waaay too much bike for me.

GCN Tech When the Liv Langma first cake out, I bought the Advanced 2 (cheap model) because a. I knew I wanted a Langma b. It was what I could afford at the time c. I could upgrade it with what I wanted over a more reasonable period of time and within my budgetary restraints. Including the bike itself, I’ve put about $4k into it and gotten it where I like, the biggest chunk being put into an amazing set of Boyd carbon wheels. I can still upgrade to di2 in the future if I want and she’d still be cheaper than had I bought the high end Langma in the first place. No regrets.

If you’re willing to compromise on what brand / model you want I think it makes more sense to buy second hand - I just bought a full carbon Scott addict with ultegra for £600 , which is around the price of an entry level bike (6’4” so most super cheap frames aren’t available in my size )

Cycle to Work is a game-changer for this whole debate. I've ridden my Bianchi 1885 (~£1,000 in 2006) into the ground, adapting it to compete in all sorts of challenges (e.g Ironman, Les Cingles) and now hugely excited to be building a new discounted F10 frame with Campag Chorus for sub 5k before a hefty discount courtesy of C2W.

I'm for an expensive old bike (not that old... 4 to 7 years) You can upgrade it like change weels or tires depending on your training... I have a beautiful 2013 Scott CR1 team(black, green and white), a tylish and light bike. The last upgrade i did is a Spinergy carbon weels... light, strong and beautiful. I'm still satisfied of my 105 group set.

twice now I've picked up bikes from professional teams. The bikes were maintained by team mechanics to keep them in top shape, were part of a quiver rather than a 'daily driver', and come with some motivating mojo. My first of these two was a Battaglin I received directly from the hands of Giovanni Battaglin in 1984 (it had been used by Alfredo Chinetti in the '84 Giro). The next one is contemporary, having been ridden by Jacob Rathe on the Jelly Belly team, an Argon 18 Nitrogen. Both bikes were picked up for incredible deals, and on both I left the old names on the top tube to celebrate their provenance. I've had plenty of bikes, many purchased new, but these two will always be special.

I bought my road bike second hand from Ebay, a 2012 Kuota KOM evo, SRAM red 10 speed, in 2014. This cost £1300 and came with 2 sets of wheels: 50mm carbon spinergy clinchers and a set of fulcrum racing 5 training wheels. The previous owner had also upgraded the handlebars to carbon specialised ones which retailed at £195 at the time. Absolute bargain and its still going strong today!

I'd definately recommend second hand. My dad bought a bianchi impulso disc with a 105 groupset for 450 which had done a London the brighton ride once. Similarly I bought a bianchi pista sei giorni that had never been ridden outside for 400. Bargains are there to be had for sure. However. The warranty is definately worth considering

Most track frames come without bottle bosses. That bike vault fixie has an aero down tube so the only spot for those clamp-on bottle cages is where they are. I use a tri-style dual bottle mount under the saddle on mine and it's awesome!!!!!! Triathletes don't ride track bikes.

Was a no brainer here atleast; My budget was originally 1400£ or so on a new bike but for that price one basically got a bare minimum 9kg+ bike. Got my bike used (Nakamura 6.0), weighs just under 7kg, carbon frame/fork, and it was barely used. Got it for 550£... Complete no brainer. Previous owner said he used it only on 6-9 trips in total since he had it from august 2013, and sure enough, according to the bike computer it was 97km. Owner before that used it apparently even less. Been riding for a month now, super happy with it. Changed the tires and tubes just in case due to age but that was a very small investment. So i personally highly recommend going for used one, but be patient and try to find one that has been used little or has been taken good care of.

I'd say it depends on your budget but you should buy used and certain parts new if you have the money. I purchased my frameset new because it was half price and everything else was used except tyres, inner tubes, bar tape, chain. You should spend quite a bit of time searching and waiting for the parts to come up for sale with little wear on them but for very cheap, or cosmetic marks which can easily be touched up by yourself. If you spend your money properly you will end up with an almost brand new bike for half the price.

I assemble all my bikes and it usually saves me around $2000 (US) as opposed to buying a fully spec'ed out bike from a bike shop. Superbike for mid-tier pricing, built to my personal needs . The only downside is if a component needs replacing under warranty, you have to deal with contacting manufacturers as opposed to a bike shop doing the work for you.

I picked up a Look 585 and put my old Record 10 speed group on it. It is 16 lbs for XL size shorty. And this is with SuperTeam 50 mm deep wheels on it. Actually, if is so much lighter than my Trek Emonda with Di2 on it that it jumps around on the road enough more that I will have to get used to it. I did pick up a Trek HiFi with 29" wheels on it. The big bucks buyer had bought it, taken it home, rode across the street in front of his house, hit the curb and fallen down and never rode again. I got it for half price. But it turned out I didn't like full suspension. So I sold it at a profit.

Hi, to what degree are power readings affected by smoothing and torque roofs? I'm using an FSA Powerbox with a Garmin Edge, and find the peak and 5 second power readings to be mysteriously low (I'm btw a high torque/low cadence rider - my preferred cadence is only 40-50).

Exotica is always a good way to go. About 5 years ago I bought a Dimar Lloyd ..... yep you'll never have heard of it. It was a collaboration with Dave Lloyd the Lancashire coach and an unknown frame builder built to Dave's spec. Super Record, 800g frame, 3T top of the range post and bars, ultralite stem, Roval Alpanista wheels coming in at 5.9kg. £1,700. Boooom. Sadly I smashed the frame in a crash. So replaced it with a brand new only used in a photo shop Sarto frame for £900. Booom.

Not sure those Canyons are really comparable - SLX vs SL frame. I think its always better to buy the top frame from a resale point of view. Also the frame and gear set combined will be significantly heavier than the SLX/Dura Ace.

Hey #askgcntech! This is a long one, but it’s complex and I wanted to get in all the relevant info. TL/DR version: I just installed a new rear derailleur - what might be causing my chain have started regularly dropping when I’m hammering in a big gear? Complete version: I have an old standby 2003 Bianchi Campione (steel frame) on which I have gradually replaced most of the components from the original Mirage/Veloce mix. I have kept it 9-speed, though, largely because of the difficulty of keeping Ultra-Shift (and the ability to shift multiple cogs up and down) without springing for Chorus or Record. Up until recently, the bike has had 9-speed Mirage Ergopower levers, 9-speed Mirage rear derailleur, 9-speed Veloce 13-26 cassette, a 10-speed Centaur front derailleur, 9-speed SRAM chain, and a 10-speed 50/34 Centaur compact crankset. I just replaced (for admittedly cosmetic reasons) the 9-speed Mirage rear derailleur with a 10-speed Veloce unit, thinking all would be well because (as I understand it) the geometry and cable pull of Campy 9- and 10-speed rear derailleur is the same. Also, I had never had any real issues with my prior mixing of 9- and 10-speed components. Unfortunately, since installing the new rear derailleur, I have had an awful problem arise. When putting down high (for me) power in the big ring and low down on the cassette, the chain has been skipping and often dropping off the outside of the chainring. It happens when I am at around 5-o’clock on the downstroke on the right crank when I am out of the saddle either sprinting or climbing, generally when I am also pulling up on the left pedal, and is truly terrifying. You can see a slow motion video of it here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ba5haM10mZy6gX0.html. I have been troubleshooting this issue extensively - rear derailleur hanger alignment, rear derailleur b-tension adjustment, checking the limit screws of the front derailleur, indexing adjustment, checking chain length (it has one full link overlap when run through the large-large combination clear of the rear derailleur), checked the chain for wear (both it and the cassette were replaced a year ago), even removing the front derailleur entirely to see if that helps. No matter what I have done, the chain skipping/dropping keeps occurring (needless to say, the process of repeatedly checking this, and feeling the crank let out while I’m laying it down, is not pleasant!). I did see that the big chainring seems very slightly out of true, but by only a fraction of a millimeter. Also, I would note that I am fitter than I probably ever have been, so I think I am experiencing more frame flex when pedaling hard than I have in the past. Lastly, I have noticed significantly more chain slap when going over rough patches of tarmac since putting on the new derailleur, which leads me to think the chain dropping issue may be due to a combination of too loose chain tension coupled with frame flex. What do you think, and any suggested remedies?

Title: "Cheap new bike or a used bike with higher spec?" Content: go through two examples involving top end componentry and electronic shifting before going near a new bike with 105 groupset. Great episode beyond the naming but looking at cheap new bikes and similarly priced used bikes would actually be helpful for those of us who can't afford or justify a £2000 bike, let alone an £8000 Pinarello.

Sub-500$ - Used bike if you are good at wrenching, new big box bike (above 200$ ish) if you want to learn wrenching. The latter is guaranteed to (mostly) work and you learn a lot in the setup, while the former can have hidden issues a trained eye is needed to see beyond their video (IE weld quality, vintage-to-old components to look out for, and so on).

I have noticed something interesting on team ineos bikes: It seems that they are using lighther versions of the Dogma F12 on the climbing Stages with no paint in comparrisson to the flat stages. Is this also common among other teams ? ( noticed on bernals bike in the tour de suisse)

@Jack Heinemann I thought so. It's serial wasn't reported stolen by our local crimestoppers.I took pictures of him, the undamaged frame(no filed serial) and he has an easily found public profile and good rep on offerup.. I took a chance. But yes, when something sounds too good to be true...... it is.

after building a few bikes my self, I rather a second hand one. When you buy a new bike, you get all these rubbish oem products like stems, bars, saddles, wheels, spacers, that eventually end in storage, giving away or having to sell them. Usually I aways end up upgrading them to my preference.

And then there's a large proportion of us who ride bikes for leisure or a little bit of fitness. Personally I couldn't give a toss how heavy or stiff or what colour my components are because no matter how much I spent replacing them I likely wouldn't notice any difference. So what exactly makes OEM stuff crap?
