I've been using that for four years now. Exceptions: I used plastic dry wall corners. Also I glued a screen over the spill port. Bees will enter the port and die in Mass.

Lewis Cleveland drill a hole in the black screw top that stops water from coming out when you fill it. These have to be the top fill, not the inverted ones like he shows

I have quail waters they have the small rim, I just put gravel in my tray

I hot glued a piece of stainless steel mesh that covers the water port. Did find out it needs to be screen door or slightly larger, but it keeps them from drowning.

What I like about this method is that I can hang it from a hook and do not have to level anything. My hives are on a pretty steep slope.

NagDeNu yes and it also helps keep ants from invading the area for a little time. I hang them in several spots on our site.

we did this.... if you do no plug the out channel with some sort of restriction to keep the bees from coming in... it becomes a giant bee trap. RIP 5K bees.

Make sure you screen off the drain, the bees will crawl inside by the dozens once the feeder is empty.

I had a terrible experience with that happening. When it was empty, I opened it up, and there were hundreds of bees in a big pile trying to stay warm. They were too cold to fly, so I put the feeder in a box, with a heating pad set at 100, and closed the box. It was going down to 39 degrees . The next morning, I waited until it was 55 degrees, opened the box, and they flew off. About 30 bees were dead from being covered in syrup. What a mess!!

Gallon lasts a couple days? We went through 7 gallons on Sunday. We used the 3 gallon chicken water that has the screw on cap and removable lid. Also used fish tank gravel around the bottom since we could put the cap on and remove the lid to refill. The bees do tend to kick the gravel out to get to the syrup if it gets completely empty.

Those dont last more than a year or two... you can buy a 4-6 5 gal buckets for the same price that hold way more and last a lot longer. just drill holes and invert.

Joseph Millwood I have had mine for a few years. The solution is storage if they are not being used they should be stored out of direct sunlight.. Any plastic breaks down in sunlight. The issue I have agianst the buckets is , you can't hang it up off the ground . They last about 6 months before the lid seal starts leaking. also transporting it to the yard is a headache. Also I don't run a lot of nucs I have hives so my feeding is very limited only in extreme dearth I have a couple of them just never use.Thanks for the advice. Todd and Karen

I thought about the galvanized chicken waters so you wouldn't have to flip it over. just twist and lift the top off and it seals the bottom till you put the outer cover back on.

I started to buy one however the cost was a little high. I could buy one of those or 4 or 5 of the plastic one gallons. I wanted the one gallons for the convenience.

Instead of wire have you tried our considers to put gravel / pea pebbles instead?

hyeballs yes but I got tired of scooping the gravels out every time I had to refill it with sugar water.

hyeballs you may be able to glue the gravel or rocks in the tray.

Do u have a lot of bee's to get in the bucket and die that's what I'm having trouble with

I use plastic screen or cheese cloth attached to the outlet with a zip tie. You have to change the every other use but keeps your bees out

Alas, all I got was hornets. It works great in every other way, except feeding my bees :D Any advice? :))

If yout bees are not using it take it up. Seems they have food source elsewhere.... which is a good thing

that looks like 1\4 inch ive tryed that but they bees went through the dang squares and droned are u having any of that happening

robert reeves no I haven't had an issues mine drowning bees. they seem to just stay on it. I have one I have a piece of rope in and it works great.
