Cheap Plant Pots: HomeGoods vs. T.J.Maxx vs. DollarTree!

Where do you get your indoor plant pots? I hit up 3 popular stores near me: HomeGoods, T.J.Maxx, and DollarTree to see what the selection and price was...I think you'll be surprised which won the battle!
I ended up getting 4 pots for $36 at T.J.Maxx and 2 hanging pots for $6 in my HomeGoods haul, so a total of 6 pots for $42, which is $7 per pot. I may end up drilling drainage holes in some of these as they're solid bottoms and somewhat glazed, but for now I'll just monitor my watering carefully.

I love when the dollar tree has gardening supplies, it's not always great deals but sometimes there's a cool selection. I got some really thick plastic pots there that are definitely comparable to the $10 ones at home depot. The seeds are cool too, 4 packets for a dollar. There's less seeds in each packet but just for a little home gardening it's nice to build a variety of common staples or just some pretty flowers to spread randomly.

Friendly FYI: The ones without a drainage hole aren't pots, they're planters. You would insert the potted plant (presumably still in the grower's plastic cheapo pot) into the planter. You wouldn't put soil directly into a planter as you would with a pot. The advantage of planters is that you can sort of mix and match and move plants around within different planters and things don't have to be as messy for people who aren't into transplanting. You take your store bought plant still in it's container and pop it into the planter, no fuss no muss. Planters also don't have a saucer of any kind where pots generally do. You'll have to mismatch a saucer to use a planter as a pot (assuming you can drill a hole in the base), or as you pointed out, water very carefully. Easier to pop that grower's pot into a planter and let excess water seep out of into the planter where it will dry quickly, (or where you can spill off any excess). Great video, thanks.

I agree with using pots without holes as cover pots. Just take your plastic pot out of the cover pot, water and return to the cover pot. If you put a hole in the pots with no holes then either you need to leave them outside or ruin the look by putting a saucer that doesn’t go with the decorative pot when you need to take them inside.

Don't worry about drainage holes in pots. The best way to be able to transfer your plants from smaller to bigger pots is to plant it in a plastic pot that fits within your ceramic pot. This way there's an internal way to catch extra water. Then you just pour it out of the bottom container pot if you've overwatered your plant. Also, being in plastic pots helps delay the time between waterings. Of course, having general plant knowledge and familiarity of time between watering depends on a lot of factors. Daily light level, temperatures, size of pot, type of plant. Yes, there's nothing really easy about growing plants, but it's not rocket science either! It's mostly about experience.

Dollar tree is good for mini terracotta pots, trays, and for seedling pots. In the candle section, there are also good glass and ceramic mini pots that make decorative cover pots. The plastic pots are good for orchids if they are transparent and you can add a lot of holes to the sides (diy) for air circulation. I also like Daiso’s garden section. It’s a small selection but they have cute stuff that isn’t always common in the US

I work at Goodwill, and that is where I get many of my pots. There is one problem, however, and that is that many of them are not literal pots, so you'll have to get creative when it comes to drainage. I opt to either nail drainage holes into a metal container, drill them or add a drainage layer with aquarium gravel and window screen BUT you get a unique, one of a kind pot to give your plants character.

The ones without drainage holes are cache pots to hold a slightly smaller pot with holes. Just pull out the interior pot to water then reinsert in the cache pot with no worries of leakage. The ones with attached bottom tray are harder to keep clean

I love that youre reasonable about your spending. I'm as unimpressed with creators that want to fenagle dollar tree stuff to make it work as I am the people who spend a ridiculous amount at a high end store. I just want something that looks nice, is ready to go (save for maybe drilling a drain hole) for a reasonable price.

I personally avoid the pots with the attached water tray. They are hard to keep clean and allow drainage to continue.

I have one... I take the pot to the kitchen and water it from the faucet and I have to tilt the pot to spill the excess water from the attached plate, and wait for a minute or two to spill again, twice more. It's more work indeed. I think it's alright for plants that don't mind soggy soil.

Can't believe he actually paid for it. I broke something at TJ Maxx once and the lady told me it happens all the time, it wasn't a big deal, and even the employees break things so not to worry about paying for it. The people at the checkout line should have known better.

Home goods looks really similar to TJ Maxx in Canada. Some trift shops are pricey in my area, so I end up at the dollar store and Winners (Canadian TJ Maxx). When they aren't drainage holes, I just use pot liners. I prefer to see the roots in transparent plastic and be able to redecorate without repotting. My oxalis and thanksgiving cactus love the ones with attached saucers!

You should try Marshall’s. They have the best prices by far. Big and cute pots for $9.99 smaller ones for under $7.99. I have found some very unique and interesting finds there.

Walmart has also stepped up their game in the pot Dept. I've gotten some really good ones from there, even though their selection is not as large as TJ Maxx or Home Goods. Home Goods is expensive in general, those buggers 🤣

I get pots from Dollar Tree, but I go to the bucket and wastebasket section, so you get bigger pots that work just fine for gardening, just drill some holes in the bottom for drainage. You can spray paint them to make them look more like pots or glue some of Dollar Tree's gemstones around the pots. Other than that, thrift stores have tons of them, or if you're on Facebook, and SOS for "Anyone have any old planters they're not using?" will usually get you more than you will ever need. I use tall laundry baskets for composting because of the big holes..... You just have to think outside the box. And speaking of boxes, I once needed one more planter for strawberries and didn't feel like going back to the store, so I Just put a bag of potting soil in a big box, sprinkles the seeds in and the box held up for the whole season. Outside of course. It wasn't pretty, naturally, but the strawberries were delicious and the box was great for the compost the following year.

Dang, I think I got bamboozled on offer-up. I bought two 7 inch pots for $20 each thinking I was getting a great deal. The pots were new and never used. IF the lady bought them from tjmax or HG, then she just made a come-up. Thank you for the tip. I'll def be checking out discounted stores from now on.

All of those pits are very expensive bro. I get my pits at the dollar store for a dollar each. They are made out of hard plastic, pretty good stuff and cheap af. There's lots of sizes, I got 2.5 gallon pots, 2, 1.5, 1.2 , 0.9 etc. Fit for all plants. When you grow 40 different vegetables, and when half of that needs pots, 15$ per pot is a lot... I agree they are a lot nicer, but the dollar ones are very cost effective.

Hey, I was at Goodwill today and bought a wicker laundry basket for $3 and a good sized wooden box for $3. I’ll line the basket with landscaping cloth to retain the soil and drill holes in the bottom of the wooden box. Thrift stores can be a great place to find planters.

Goodwill is one place; another is At Home. But beware - if you buy a light-colored pot like white or beige or something - if it's matte finish - I would highly recommend sealing it on the inside. I bought a really cool white with grey lines on it that developed brown and yellow streaks as I continued to water the plant due to the water seeping through the pot.

I definably have gotten some good pots from marshalls, Tj Maxx, home depot, amazon, wish, target, kohl's, and dollar tree. For me, pot heaven, especially for bigger pots (centerpieces), is the At Home store. No matter the season there will be a huge section for just pots, most with drainage holes as well. It is all affordable and most of them you can get in sets if you want to.

The key to buying planters is waiting till the end of summer (August/September). Huge markdowns @ Marshall’s, TJ Max & Homegoods. If you can find planters in the winter they are usually cheaper as well. Mid to End of August is the biggest markdowns.
