When I came across this Toyota Prius, it was in sad shape. The catalytic converter had been stolen and the hybrid battery was junk. I tried to recondition the battery, to no avail. Since then, I've installed a new catalytic converter, an oxygen sensor and a refurbished battery. The Red triangle of death is gone and I'm getting SMOKING MPG!

The New York Cabs that are Prius's are never turned off, except to do oil, tires and brake pads. Other than that they run 24-7. That is insane reliability.

Best car , I’ve driven mine all over Australia and it’s waited faithfully for us while we went sailing for three years and it started first try zero problems and has worked for two years since , overall had the car for seven years now and darn thing keeps going with zero problems it’s amazing. So reliable , there’s still Prius taxis from 2006 running around my city and now it’s 2024.

In love with my reliable Generation 2, 2008 Prius, with 170,000 miles. Bought new 25K 10/2007. Excellent shape, since its garage kept. Original Battery perhaps due to less corrosion on the hybrid battery connections? Has additional front and rear running lights. The HID headlights failed but replaced them myself by feeling my way with my hand and did not have to take the bumper off. They are much brighter than the originals. Replace the 12V battery twice. New water pump. New left front bearing. 2 New PVC valve replacement. Fix a leak in the air-conditioning system. Cleaned hybrid battery fan with an added cleanable filter screen at the air intake. Sometimes the dash lights go out when the weather gets cold then will go back on within 50 miles of driving. Heard it’s cold solder joints on the electronics? Went 90K 10yr. with the energy saver Defender Michelin tires and replaced them with the regular Defender Michelin tires. Loss a few miles per gallon but handles better and a softer ride maybe due to new thread. The Prius is used for long trips only with an average mileage of 50+ MPG. Short trips are by bike, feet and public transit all year. It’s a beautiful sports car Barcelona RED and a sleeping camping car with a 6’ bed with great cargo capacity. Adding a portable inverter makes a 115 Volt generator for back up efficient home power with the on and off cycle of the engine. The Princess Prius is a tough survivor like the princess cat in the movie “The Incredible Journey”. The beautiful large dash display is ahead of its time with sharp graphics like a space ship. Ran out of gas, and a whole dashboard lit up including the triangle of death (indicates serious malfunction - do something now!). Fortunately filled up 1/2 mile away before the battery became too low. Never again!! It’s an adventure reliable stealth vehicle that slips through the air quietly! The best smooth styling of all the model years. Definitely a incognito James Bond vehicle with secret abilities never to be underestimated. So watch out!!! Soon it will become a classic antique with appreciating value

I bought that model brand-new in 2008. 160k miles later, the only thing that's broken is one of the headlight ballasts. It burned oil for a while so I put in the lightest approved oil for about a year to clean out the sticky cylinder rings, and now, back on the recommended weight, no more oil burn. Still makes 40mpg year round average. Still using the original brakes, too, which I'm watching like a hawk because those things have got to be wearing out soon.

I feel the shot of the diminutive Gen 2 Prius beside the huge Jeep is iconic. The complexity of the big, friction-plate transmission, the hydraulics to operate the gear changes, the illusion of acceleration as it comes on to a peak in each and every gear…that compared to the Prius’ system, is an ancient and arcane thing. If Toyota had marketed the Prius as a revolutionary automatic transmission, which ‘happened to have’ two electric motors within it, and did away with multiple friction plates, and the impeller, and all the fragility, I’d have bought a Prius ten or 20 years earlier. The big turbodiesels I have had, their auto transmissions were a major part of them ending their time with me, and the final one, a Volvo made in the Ford era, was failing at a rate too much for me to keep up with repairs! Your car collection, sounds really lovely, I did sit in a Corvette once, but bought a V6 Honda instead that time. I knew a young lady who travelled the states, and she knew two young men with them…both wrote them off in short order, but were not seriously injured, and I guess they had a blast before their respective greasy roads threw them off, so hey, good for them. Thanks for the insight, take care all.

Great advise on fixing one of the mind bending causes of the check engine light. Prius hybrid batteries typically last 150k-200k miles. They cost new $3,000 plus $1,000 installation unless you DIY, but it's complex. Rebuilt hybrid batteries cost $1,500, same installation costs. Something used car buyers must consider before buying a used Prius with over 150k miles.

Grom Audio has a unit that piggybacks on the existing hardware giving both Apple CarPlay or Android Auto using the Prius OEM Display. This unit allows KZfaq and Netflix on Prius OEM display. This unit has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. Typically, the HDMI output allows for an external monitor while HDMI input allows adding Chromcast, Roku stick or mouse to the unit. These is separate available harness for rear camera and front camera. The unit has 2 USB ports and port for a microSD Card. Installation takes a couple hours. There is no splicing of wires. The kit comes with custom cables that interface with the pre-existing Prius cables. This allows for a factory look with all the functionality of the Prius buttons in place. I found this unit from Prius Chat forum. The gal in the Prius chat forum took several hours to install. This is an easy DIY project, a no-brainer.

The Prius represents a completely different kind of high performance. Making big power is a well understood process - just throw money, cubic inches and fuel at a goal and you can hit it. The Prius is pointed at a different goal: maximum distance per unit of fuel. This is WAY more subtle, especially when you still want four doors and room for the kids. The first Prius looked like the Echo, a dinky little spud that was too small for American tastes. The second-gen Prius got way bigger, picked up a lot of power and was even thriftier. Each subsequent generation up until the very newest one has followed this pattern - the newest Prius is a tad smaller than the previous generation, is MUCH mower powerful and you can even convince yourself it's kind of quick. And the base model is still the thriftiest ride you'll find without building a car in cooperation with the NASA aerodynamics lab helping you out.

Oil consumption is there down fall. Especially people that do 10k oil changes and then decide to ad another 3k. Plugs the oil ring drain holes in the pistons, and damages liner walls with time. Do to the energy recovery system, i find it abuses the front tires a little above average. As well as it will eat the steer tires on the inside, as the front suspension gives up with miles. . I have a 40mpg on a 2008 prius, I also have a non-original catalytic converter, is there any way I can save money on buying a new battery, and change something in the old one?
@mohawkgarage
@mohawkgarage 2 ай бұрын
Yes, you have options. There are ways to recondition your battery and swap out cells, but that did not work for me. I opted for a warrantee on a reconditioned GreenTec battery. They are located about an hour from me in Tampa. They came to my house, installed it, ran a diagnostic check, and even took it for a test drive. I'm very happy with their product and service. There are videos here on KZfaq that show how to "balance " cells. That may work for you. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@mohawkgarage
@mohawkgarage Жыл бұрын
Almost everyone I've talked to says Gen 2 is best (2005-2009). It's very basic, but very efficient. There are problems with every type of car, but the Gen 2 Prius seems to be very reliable and economical. Verify that the hybrid battery is healthy before purchasing. If the battery is bad, prepare to pay about $1,500 for a refurbished unit with a warranty. That's what I did, and I could not be happier. I got 57.2 mpg out of my last tankful. Cooler temps generally increase gas mileage. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@Gabriel_the_Shemite All I can really give you is my opinion, but I think a nice Prius Gen 2 with 100k miles should be worth 3500 to 5500. I'm my view, these cars are worth more than conventional cars because of their ability to pay you back as you drive. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Is your vehicle throwing any cam timing codes? Your current mileage is precisely what mine was getting when the vvt solenoid jammed itself in one position, keeping the ICE running in the less efficient Otto cycle I believe.
