There have been times in the past when I would say “this is going to be the last repair I will ever green light”: about 3 miles after driving my ‘93 600 from the shop, I take in all the cars around me. There’s the bmw series 5 and the mb suv and the Range Rover and the Camry and odyssey and everything else that has the appeal of a brand new washing machine with 4 tires. Then I rummage through the history of 140 ownership and the computer modules,the evaporator, the water logged fuse box in the trunk because the rear window molding was brittle, the wiring harness that after replacing I put in a box and sent to the prez of MB in New Jersey with a note saying this should have been a recall and who responded with a $1500 credit to my local MB service department, (which I used up on oil changes, parts delivered to my mechanic and spare key orders for my ‘68 280se because you can’t get spares for the ‘93 anymore and the suspension,the shocks, the radiator and the weeks and weeks of waiting for the parts and repairs to be completed......then as I walk to the car weeks later and look at this incredible machine, notice somewhere close by the new S500 which I can put in the trunk of my 93, drive away when all of a sudden the ABS light or the suspension light comes on again...and then I say okay, one more, just one more repair......and so it goes. There’s a saying that goes “die young and leave a beautiful corpse” which I have tailored to “die broke and leave a fully functioning w140”. Because I know,someone out there gets it. Even when I’ve had it.

Even though I haven't met Pierre face to face, I still consider him a friend. Im in the business and specialize in older euro cars. I concentrate more on Mercedes more than any other brand. I remember years back calling him about a problem I was having with a w126. It was after hours and Pierre spent a great deal of time going through the paces with me. This man right here is a God sent to the Mercedes community, and most of all a genuine person!

Good evening from Switzerland! Mr. Hedary, I have to say the following, I have some minty low mile fetish 140s in my collection and the cars still look massive next to a new W222. You can look down very well on the pleabian minions when you ride along in the 140. The 140 conveys a certain respectful dictator / plutocrat aura similar to the W100 600, which (unfortunately) no longer embodies the current luxury class vehicles. This is probably why the 140 was one of the favorite vehicles of people like Muammar al-Gadaffi, Putin, the Yakuza and Co. even when there were successor series to choose from. The space, security [extremly rugged in a serious crash, a kind of unique "chopped" ladder frame like a truck, plus (!) a unibody is a construction they have not done on any other mercedes except the W240 maybach which build on the 140 chassis, makes this car a "tigertank" that will crush the other car in a serious accident, newer big cars are build weaker for socialist partner protection in a crash to help the smaller car, so you can say 140/240 was the pinnacle of crash saftey in some way, to only protect the occupants of the 140/240 and crush the enemy car with no mercy] a long-distance suitability and comfort of the 140s are in no way inferior to those of the new luxury vehicles, unlike, for example, the very old-school 126 model. Good examples of the 140 series are expensive, some are above comparable 126s, which was not the case a few years ago here in Europe (minty 140 500/600 under 60kmiles, go for about 45k/chf in Euros about 40k). I cannot understand the fear of some "control units", the electronics in the 140 are rock solid and really not rocket science, similar to the W124 E500 E420 E320 or all R129 up to ´98, sometimes even redundant and can still be repaired in the distant future, in contrast to today's cheap and over-complex electronics. In terms of mechanical durability and engine design, the M104, M119 and M120 engines are unsurpassed as far as the petrol engines from Daimler are concerned, provided they are properly cared for, that is the golden era of Daimler, something better was not built before and after. I think some are only now beginning to understand what epochal masterpieces have been created. Elsewhere in the world it was already considered a masterpiece that competed with Rolls Royce and Bentley and even degraded them, similar to the W100. It is not for nothing that the W240 Maybach builds on the chassis of the 140 series. An E32 / E38 or Audi V8 / A8, Lexus LS on the other hand, looks like a poorly manufactured mid-range car, the same with the unworthy supposed successor, the W220, which initiated the qualitative degeneration of Mercedes under J. Schrempp. The W220 actually was not the true successor of the 140, even if some may think so, actually the W240 Maybach was the successor/reincarnation of the W140. The development costs of the 140 were the highest in mercedes history with the engineers running the show and going truly megalomaniac, it was the last engineers car from mercedes and not a car, were accountants and shareholders made the development decisions. The ride, build quality and "aura" is unlike any other mercedes before and after. In short, you need money and knowledge to maintain a 140 series properly, you cant do the typical american hillbilly repairs on these sophisticated cars, but when you do it right they are bullit proof and go forever. I dont get it when you recommend the 124 inline six and V8 and warn about the 140, they are very similar, and i should know because i have all these cars. I am a serious collector, so maybe dont call out on things you are not so familiar with (regarding the 140). Its the same argument that its a pain in the ass to sort out problems on a beat up 126. Always, always, always buy the best condition one you can find, no matter what classic car.

I have an R129 280 SL. It is a 96 and has been in the family since 1999. It has had a new cooling fan and the plastic rear window in the soft top has been replaced and apart from that it has been serviced as needed. The imobilizer is a pain but apart from that the car is a delight to own and drive. I hope we get another 21 years of trouble free driving.

You make valid points. I bought a beautiful ‘95 S420 with only 63,000 miles. It would intermittently go into limp home mode and the ASR light would come on. A couple of two very good Benz mechanics, one who specializes in W140 and W129, plus a dealership, couldn’t solve the problem. I was ready to get rid of it, but the problem was solved by a young mechanic, trained by MB in Europe. Turned out to be a corroded neutral safety switch; it was the only corrosion on the entire car. Car has been completely trouble free for 30,000 miles since.

I bought an R129 with 129,000 miles on it for $5,,000. Then I put about $6,200 into it. And 10,000 miles later I’m still enjoying every minute I spend driving it. I could’ve spent $5-$7,000 more than I’ve got in this one and probably had a slightly nicer one. But from where I’m standing, I have the same car for $5-$7,000 LESS, and for better or worse, as the second owner, know the complete history of the car.

my 1998 S420 has had less problems than my E39. The worst thing the W140 did to me is rust out the two heater pipes going through the firewall due to a stupid design of putting foam around the pipes where they enter the first firewall. Everything else has been minor: O2 sensors, transmission electrical connector boot, fuel pressure regulator. It's spent almost all of it's life on the west coast and it was garaged - no rust. I've had it for 8 years.

Im trying to understand the cautions on R129. Isnt an R129 a 124 based car? Wasn't R129 the last of the engineering first, cost be damned Mercedes? Ive owned one from new and all the issues with the car can be traced to lack of minor maintenance NOT recommended by the dealer but recommended by Mercedes. I would think anyone with 10-15K and a spare 10K can get into a great R129 and more importantly , be a good steward of one. . It has style, space, pace and I've never had problems with the plastic bits. Meanwhile our 2012 wagon has fading wood and a torn seat cushion but fortunately is flawless in operation.

everybody thinks that they own the last row Mercedes. The truth is at the r129 was based heavily on the 124. These are the good parts of the car. The r129 though had a lot of material shortcomings. It's not so much the fact that the car was badly designed, it was the materials that were used to build it. Whether we are talkin at rubber seals or molded plastic panels, they all deteriorate when exposed to the right environment.

I think the trick is to get one that has been taken care of and stored INDOORS. Once it's all brittle and falling apart good luck. Spare parts (especially body) are in very short supply, and what is still around is $$$$.

Good info, always waiting for new videos in this channel!. i got a 124 91 us...a few weeks ago the car start with electrical and other faliures,,, i think that they are all come from the same faliure... battery is ok, 12.6v. but old..didnt measure yet the alt. the problem starts with the cruise control... starts to disconect in the highway by it self..and then work perfect for a few days..when that happend, i just have to press reset and the cursar work perfect again. I change the speed sensor on the cluster and the amplifier... i put 3 of them from the junk yard.. from a 91 94 95... all off them started to working perfect just one day... the next day in the morning it couldnt engage... the car try but the was a lot of shake and then shut off...now is not working at all. Next thing was the lights.. the right front fog light sometimes works and in the rear tail light some bulbs work sometimes... i change the light module and the problem was fix untill today.. i turn on the fog light and the right one didnt work untill a i wait for a few minutes. has a aftermarket radio and just the rear speakers work... sometimes the front ones.. but very rare... when thats happen i feel the car running better jaja..antenna dead. got a bad o2 sensor.. check engine light is on beacuse of that, code 17 i guess... never have any issue with other lights or any electric accesories. when im in the highway very rarely i can see the needles on the cluster moving... like shaking... the fuel one and the temperature... it wasent the vibration of the road or anything like that and the most important one. a lot of times this week, when i go to the grossery store or other place and park the car for like 20min aprox... it wont start.. i put the key, turned to crank the engine and you heard a click and all the lights of the car shut off... there is no power... i have to disconect the battery to reset the computer and then i can run. the car is in a perfect shape.. very well take care... is my commute car since a year, doing 80miles per day. nothing bad since a few weeks ago. guess the engine is pretty fine because a did 130mph. 180.000miles. any idea where to look?

Minor issues on 12 year ownership: 1 window regulator, blower motor resistor, leaking high pressure fuel line after pump caused hard cold starts in morning, mechanical lever for hydro pneumatic suspension, fan clutch. Caveat directly from one of my golf partners: Gary (long-time Mercedes owner) found a terrific looking W129, beaufiful original paint, great leather, good wheels and tires, decent driving, with just over 90K miles. He got it for a reasonable price, especially considering the sterling cosmetics. Within 90 days, the transmission went out, the soft top mechanism went on strike (but it did have a hardtop, so it was useable) and the climate control went kaput. The resulting repairs, if done at a dealership, would have esily exceeded the cost of the car. A good shop did the work, and for a fair price using a "rebuilt" transmission (by whom, I do not know)...but Gary now owns the car for rather more than it will EVER be worth. I've met the former (original) owner, and I don't think he had a clue about this impending disaster, and he'd done a good job of getting the car serviced. Now, the suspension is starting to make unpleasant noises, and there is a clunk in the drivetrain. I warned Gary, but the pretty girl seduced him and has now broken his heart and stabbed him in the bank account! So, be afraid...be VERY afraid!

I have a 1991 R129 300SL-24 and a 1996 W140 S320 LWB. Have owned both for about a decade each. Acquired both in fairly good condition, and now restored to as close to mint as daily drivers can be. Boy, these cars don't stop ageing as you restore them over the years; it is a race where the finish line keeps moving with always something else breaking the moment you fix something. Completely agree with Pierre that it is a good idea to walk away from R129s and W140s that have not been looked after well. Even as an owner who is obsessive about preventive maintenance and cosmetic restoration, the sub-par plastic and rubber materials used throughout the car is always a constant headache of upkeep. Mechanically they are fairly reliable cars if you maintain them well.

Hi! First, I always learn a lot with all your videos. Thank you! Having a 1995 sl320 since many years, you are absoluty right. Having also a w126 300sd and a w116 450se, I realized that the r129, if well maintened, driven correctly, is a real pleasure to live with. This Mercedes, of course, is much more sophiticated than a w123, a w116... Yes, electronic and all those components that make a Mercedes a Mercedes have to be checked here. And it cost. My 95 SL320 (M104) is the last SL with a six in line. The five gears transmission is souple, intelligent, sweet. No leak anywhere. Everythig is dry and clean. Want to buy one of those? I suggest this : choose a proper one witch have been used and maintened regulary every year. Mercedes is an eloquent product revealing how much these cars suggest us positive emotions...when it works as it should!

Hi, I appreciate you sharing your experience with these cars. I think the reason you feel "betrayed" by that 129 is because...well it betrayed you. HG repair and runs like crap?? Who wouldn't want to throw it off a cliff and urinate on it on the way down... I get it. In my 8 plus years of owning a 129 (90 300SL) I must say mine's been way, way better than I expected, which is why I've kept it. 5 or 6 top related components, cap rotor and (hard to find) distributor insulator, wires plugs. Brakes rotors tires filters same as any other car. Shocks F and R. Voltage regulator- Bosch battery 8 years ago-still going. Clutch fan, belt and tensioner nonsense. IAC valve, fuel regulator, both used and fine. Dash flash once in a blue moon-easy repair if I have to but have not yet. Some plastic bits are crumbling-same as any other convertible I've had. Personally, I think if and when it is (more) collectable I MAY at best get back 75 cents on the dollar of what I have in it, but the trade off is I drive it 8 months out of the year and love how damn smooth it is. Now that I know what to expect I would buy another one but only after careful inspection and frugal negotiation to account for my time to do the repairs and also the fact some parts are a bit hard to get. But I think a 129 is overall OK ..IF and again IF you are mechanically inclined a smite and must have a roadster. Both of which I am. Thanks again for the vacuum gauge tip on setting the 3mm throttle plate screw. Worked like a champ for me.

@gravytrain416
@gravytrain416 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jmjdit it's been 20 years since I had it, but the "death wobble" in the steering was horrible. Hit a pothole and the steering wheel would shake violently. Dodge had the same issue with their pickup trucks. (I had a 1995 2500 Cummins when it was three years old, and even after the recall, it still did it). Otherwise, the way the plug wires were run, side-by-side, over the top of the engine, the heat would cook them, and they'd start arcing off each other, creating a skip in the engine. Went to the MB dealer, and no older than it was, they didn't offer a set of plug wires for the car! NONE of the chain stores could get a set of wires either. Couldn't find them online. Dealer said that the only thing they could do was sell me the wire by the foot that I'd have to cut myself to fit, and the plug ends separately. By the time that was said and done, a set of six plug wires was going to cost over $300. That was almost 20 years ago! I ended up running silicone between where I could see the spark (it was obvious when you looked at it in the dark with the engine running). Paid someone else to sell it. I didn't want to have to deal with it anymore. Otherwise, it was just a lot of misc. things with the car. The interior rattles (power rear-view mirror got on my nerves). Door panel wood trim starting to come loose, rattles in the interior that no 100K-mile Mercedes should have, and probably more things that I can't remember two decades later, but might cross my mind after I post this. It was beautiful, and rode like a dream. Super-comfortable, very, very nice car. Handled well, and was a pleasure to drive. Just too many problems.

@@gravytrain416 I certainly agree with that power rear vision mirror, horribly expensive and badly made. Fortunately my mechanic knew how to pull it apart and fix it (plastic tabs broken inside) versus about $1500 for a new one. The electric mirror was discontinued not long after release. Perhaps you had the first type of W140 wiring insulation which was biodegradable. I haven't had maddening issues but I know I could in the wrong hands. Well, I would certainly defer to Mr Hedary regarding his knowledge of these cars. Happily on the upside finding a well maintained variant of the 140 club , particularly in my estimation the '97 - '99 CL 500 is something worth doing. My '97 CL 500 is such a vehicle. In consideration of all the problematic 140's out there, well maintained prime examples of these machines not only provide an unmatched period level of comfort & performance for a German " luxo barge" but are showing signs of appreciation as well. Sure they're not everybody's "cup of tea". Those who do prefer these last of the "over engineered" big Benzes , are hard pressed to find anything else comparable to the automotive persona these vehicles provide. I have been there with a couple of R129's... and I also own a W140 (which IS a real Mercedes btw, thank you) lol... One time, I made the mistake in the past of taking on a 1990 300SL, with CIS of course, that would just randomly start idling rough for seemingly no reason. The car had been to at least five different shops, and they all did their fair share of botching the car's various systems, and the owner also had a go with "repairing" many things on it as well (wood screws in the dome lights, need I say more?). I chased my tail diagnosing things for a while, and when i thought I had actually fixed something on it, it would almost immediately go right back to being broken. Like the car just didn't want to LIVE anymore. There ended up being so many faults everywhere, that I told the owner that I really didn't think I could help him. At least not for his shoestring tight-wadd budget expectations. An argument ensued, but I was very glad to just be done with it. You CAN'T fix them all Pierre!

my 1996 S280 has had few problems (purchased used 6 years ago with 300.000 km on the clock , one previous owner). The worst thing the W140 did to me is a gear lever sensor and ignition coils malfunctions . Everything else has been minor: O2 sensor, fuel pressure regulator, injectors cleaning, typical oil and filter service in auto gearbox, some ball joints in front and rear suspension. It's spent all of it's life in Greece and it was not garaged - no rust. I love it and now has 360.000 km, thank you for your guidance in real Mercedes world.

I bought an r129 SL500 for a fair price...but holyshit if I wasn't a mechanic, didn't knew where to buy the parts or how to fix the old parts or would had gone to the dealer or even an indy mechanic, I'd be crying. Right now I'm happy because I saved tons and I mean TONS, but this car is definitely not for the weak hearts. I know a guy that has tons BUT TONS of issues with his...and all I can say is good luck to him if he ever choose to sell it because no one will buy a messed up R129. You have no choice to commit to it once you buy one. The other issue is that some indies, actually don't know crap about the car and starts putting the wrong parts or fluids. This is what happened to mine. Ex-owner/mechanic changed the trans fluid but forgot an o-ring for the trans plug, then put the wrong motor oil and overfilled it, changed the diff oil but didn't clean the breather, replaced the front shocks with bilsteins but not the top mount, replaced the spark plugs but did a cross-reference to another bosch model = almost burning the coils (I could be wrong), didn't tighten the boot between the throttle body and the MAF, did a poor job on the brakes and the list goes on... Bet the ex-owner thought the car was getting crappier everyday despite putting big bucks into it and let it go when it was actually the mechanics fault.

I don't mean this as a criticism, but basically what Pierre is saying here is just common sense, or should be: Don't buy a 30-year-old car with lots of miles and signs of abuse/neglect just because it cost $90,000+ when new and now costs next to nothing. Which pretty much applies to any car, but particularly one with a lot of complex mechanicals and electronics. I bought a '97 SL500 Sport a few years ago at an auction, which was a bit risky, I know! I wasn't able to start up the engine, but I did inspect the car and it looked very clean and only had 52,000 miles. The engine compartment was almost pristine. The interior was a bit soiled but showed no signs of abuse or wear. The leather was still tight and had minimal cracking on the driver's seat, the car showed few signs of spending its life in the sun, and a registration document in the trunk showed it had spent at least part of its life in central California. I later was able to contact the original owner, a nice little old lady in Bakersfield, Calif., who was the first and only long-term owner. It had been garaged and it came with all its service receipts, showing it had mostly been regularly serviced by the MB dealer that sold it. I had to do the dreaded hydraulic roof cylinder replacement, get one of the Monoblock wheels straightened, and about a year into it the transmission started acting up due to an internal piece that broke off; an easy (but not inexpensive) fix. Other than that, it has been a wonderful car. Solid, well-built, extremely quiet, with lots of smooth power and torque. It is the most comfortable cruiser for long road trips that I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot of cars. The key is to first find an independent mechanic that knows the R129, and then keep up on the routine maintenance. These V8s will last a long time if properly maintained. Just don't buy an abused one!

I'm not a fan of the W140 after about '94, they lack too much of the fundamental qualities which established the brand. Low kms and garaging do a lot to help especially the later ones but in my opinion they are still lacking in ways which prove the W126's superiority. It's not a design which cheapened well. Any W140 which is desiccated (the perforated seat sections especially) is an expensive restoration project which will have you wanting to tear your hair out and still leave you with a cosmetically ugly car. There is no way to restore the seats with original materials and when people reupholster them it ruins the interior ambience. I own a W140 and prefer it to the W126 in ideal condition. Make no mistake you need to have someone with real deep knowledge and experience to make the servicing/maintenance/repairs pleasant.

Yes, they most definitely do. It's not so much of a ticking time bomb as the engine harness though. The rest of the harnesses can fail at times, but it doesn't happen often, and when it does, it's usually just in a small localized area (which can be repaired as opposed to replaced). Any wiring exposed to extremes will fail on these cars. Since most of the wiring is not in the hot engine bay or outdoors, however, most of it stays pretty much intact. Hope that helps.

@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 The Mercedes dealership parts guy here(good for W123 OE matched dual belts, hoses, widgets) tells me things he probably shouldn't. Once he said he worries about the mechanics because the service garage is totally enclosed/air conditioned and when the HVAC people come to change the massive air filters the media is solid black. The other thing he told me was that Mercedes will no longer be supporting any of their new production after 7 years. Wow. So, they aren't there to do any true maintenance. It's going to be more and more sealed units and those cars will never see any real suspension work unless it's in an accident or a shock fails prematurely. Now it's just about keeping the car alive until it's trade-in time. How are people ok with paying so much and getting so little? Imagine what a "recently new" MB is going to be worth with a fading parts supply and no smog exemptions and a CAT that was designed small enough and cheap enough to satisfy whatever the feds required. If you find a 2020 MB in a salvage yard in 2055 I would guess that the only thing still mechanically functional on it would be the wheel lug bolts. I was going to include light bulbs but no, they will be dead LED boards.

Another great video, Pierre! I loved the looks of the W140 years ago, and made a move that I've regretted and I've been kicking myself for, for 20 years. Sold my PERFECT 1987 300SDL (203K miles, and still looked and drove like a brand-new car), and bought a 1992 solid black, inside and out, 300SE W140. It was bought new by Joe Pesci's agent in NYC. Gorgeous car. But you can't drive looks! I didn't have it long. At 101K miles, I was lucky enough to sell it. Still looked practically brand-new, but the shoddy quality was obvious. Interior rattles, parts that were NLA, even at just 7 years old, the fact that it spent more time in the shop than it did on the road, etc. I didn't do my research (big mistake), and didn't know about the class-action lawsuit against MB over those cars. Got rid of it and found another 1986 300SDL to take its place. Wish I'd never parted with the 87 SDL though. One of the best cars ever. Shame they were only made two years.
