The Kingston A400 doesnt have DRAM cache tho. It is fine for loading games, but under heavy workload, it can be disastrous (there is a case that it was slower than the HDD). Also, DRAMless SSD can wears the NAND Flash Memory even quicker. You can check things about DRAM-less SSD online. Thats the reason why i bought a slightly more expensive 860 EVO (mainly due to higher TBW than A400 by a lot (about 140TB difference), and having a DRAM cache for heavy workloads as main drive and its not wearing out quickly). Also, you dont need 860 PRO for everyday usage, the EVO variant is good enough for it, you can also look at other SSD thats cheaper and has DRAM cache included 😁

@Keikoatr72
@Keikoatr72 3 жыл бұрын
@@ozlevin1678 for 1TB... You better look for TLC ones (they tends to have more reliability, its a bit more expensive. MLC is even better than TLC, but again more expensive). QLC is nice for daily usage but for heavy workloads where you write a lot of datas, QLC tends to wears out quicker. Thats why QLC is cheaper and also shorter warranty. QLC examples whould be the Samsung QVO variants. DRAM cache is also needed for good performance + durability of the NAND Flash chips. If you wanted a really, really durable one (you are doing 3D rendering after all). Go for Samsung PRO variant (highest TBW that i know for now and MLC which is durable than TLC). Second choice would 860EVO (1TB has 600TBW which should be sufficient) or Crucial MX500 (if you can find a brand new one, its kinda rare here in my country so the price is kinda higher than 860 EVO and it comes with no warranty). But again, its up to you (since you know how much you can spend). People spend more a bit on the durability of the SSD, not just the speed of it... so do some research and look at the TBW and the reviews of it. (Also at the DRAM cache, make sure yours has one)

@Piko5552
@Piko5552 5 жыл бұрын
Everybody here is talking about the negligible difference in speed, but what you pay the premium price for is durability and reliability. The SSD from Samsung has a 5 year warranty compared to 3 years on Kingston, will sustain its fast speeds during longer workload (for example moving a 20GB game from one directory to another), and won't slow down when nearly filled. Maybe I wouldn't go for the 960 Pro in 2019 (nobody should), but 960 Evo and MX500 are slightly more expensive than this Kingston, and a lot lot better. I wouldn't cheap out on it.

@@WitchYuki22 IMO best just to get a 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus for boot and the games you play the most, then get a decent 2TB HDD for everything else (very cheap nowadays so better value for bulk storage where you don't NEED fast speed). 500GB is enough wiggle room to be useful for most everyday things, and you won't be paying a fortune for it. This is what I just built my own computer with, and it works perfectly for what I need. 970 Evo Plus is one of the best SSDs available atm, at least in terms of benchmarks and reliability. As for programs, I've not really had much experience with other brands so can't say. Samsung software is decent enough though.

@Morpheus-pt3wq

The way SSDs are made (closed system with its own OS), both of them can die or endure for the same amount of time. Dram cache is only useful when writing large files at full speed - which, in case of a drive for games, mostly does not happen. Most users use either internet (Gbit LAN can handle up to 125MB/s speed) or HDD (5400rpm - 150MB/s, 7200rpm HDD up to 200MB/s), which is way below SLC cache speed. Well, except QLC drives, since QLC is extremely slow, with maximum writing speed of 80MB/s after exhausting SLC cache. Also don´t forget, that many currently sold SSD´s don´t have dram cache - AFAIK, only Samsung and Crucial use it and only in selected models. Everyone else uses only SLC cache. Durability means nothing when it´s all only electronics. It can die within first hour of use (yes, even the most expensive Samsung can do that) or endure years of service with zero issues. Just like every other consumer grade electronics.

SSD speed don't make much difference as long as it don't break with all your data. You won't feel practical difference because there are much more bottleneck in thesystem than storage speed. It would've been a better comparison if you would've used a higher-end SSD that's still very cheap. You can pick up the Crucial MX500 and ADATA SU800 for only $5-10 more than the A400 and they're way, way faster than it. The 860 PRO is only really desirable for frequent sustained writes (such as found in cloning or video storage) and its *extremely long* lifespan. A much better "cheap vs. expensive" comparison would be comparing the Samsung 970 EVO Plus to the Kingston A400, since NVMe SSDs like the 970 EVO Plus are far faster in every category than SATA SSDs. Another good comparison would be comparing the Samsung 860 EVO to the Kingston A400, since they're closer together in price range and the 860 EVO is just as good as the PRO for gaming and general use.

@@MegaDominik1 You have no idea of what you're talking about or haven't done your research then because if you go to UserBenchmark you'll see that the Crucial MX500 500GB gets an average of 477MB/s for sequential reads while the Kingston A400 480GB gets 332MB/s which IS a large difference of 35%. The 2nd biggest factor for loading games is 4K reads at high queue depths and there the Crucial MX500 obliterates the A400, averaging 351MB/s vs 212MB/s. That makes the MX500 65% faster in that aspect. Overall the MX500 will be about 50% faster at loading games so yes, WAY faster.

@nilsfrahm1323
@nilsfrahm1323 4 жыл бұрын
The read speeds are usually good even for cheap ssds, the write speeds are much lower though and endurance. There are two types of write speeds, sequential and random. Random write speeds are lowest and you need the speed whenever windows installs files, when you extract archives with many small files, i.e. when you do serious work. They also use a trick - use a ram buffer and a region of flash in single level cell mode, a mode in which it will write fast, as a buffer area. The ssd will write in this area, then will transfer to final location. So its important to run write tests with size larger than this buffer, to find sustained write speed. Usually its a 22GB or 40GB area. Real sequential speed will drop to 300MB/sec or lower once you fill that 22GB area. Also, TBW should be considered by dividing to capacity, samsung now sells 500GB drives with 300TBW, but older MLC drives used to have 120GB and 300TBW endurance.

Maybe, there is barely difference in loading speed(about 3-4 sec in average), but there is a huge difference in multitasking! As I had two of these SSD's I can tell, that Samsung has good multitasking. For example, I can still work with files, zip or unzip smth, while I'm installing a game on ssd. With Kingston drive I couldn't do that, the system becomes very slow

I don't think 170$ is really considered expensive in the world of high end ssds. Would love to see this redone with a top of the line M.2

The thing is these 3 seconds add up. Moreover, it is also about drive longevity and stability.

It really varies. I've tested my PNY and Sandisk that are both cheap against an Evo and they are barely 2 seconds apart. I'll save my 40-80 bucks.

Sata ssds are cheaper and very likely the wiser choice, but to compare the 970 Evo Plus or 970 Pro vs 860pro is not to see who would win, but for how much, how much gain in loading times does an nvme gives you over a the best sata ssd.

@redrocker1582
@redrocker1582 4 жыл бұрын
It's not really about the loading time but the durability of the disc. If you fully load that samsung multiple times there will be little difference in speed later, but if you load the cheaper one to let's say 70% once, it will kinda break and the loading time will be even worse than old HDDs

It really depends on the game and the amount of data your cpu/gpu can handle vs how fast the medium reads it. A faster SSD only really helps with a game that heavily streams data with a system that can process the data that is read by the SSD at an equal or greater pace.

It's not only the extra 3 seconds with the expensive one. You're also getting longer life, cooler operation, and an overall more quality built drive.

@Shouom
@Shouom 5 жыл бұрын
They are cheaper and sequential speeds may be only a bit slower, but the more expensive models are made from more reliable parts that could be used in a more professional environment without them failing. Not that cheaper ssd's are made to fail, just saying that expensive parts tend to last longer.

Yeah but some people do not understand this. I had SanDisk Plus and it gave up in 6 months due to downloading and copying big files...got replacement and sold it immediately. Bought 860 Evo and after 2 years its still going strong. Performance is like day and night. So much better than cheap TLC ssds. On the good side i get +2 more years of warranty (5 years total)
