Very true! When I was a kid in the 70s, Gibson and Fender were the only playable guitars. Ibanez was making some great Les Paul and Flying V copies, but nobody wanted one. An Epiphone or Ventura SG copy was barely playable. Things sure have changed.

Epi's are 1/2 the cost if not more of a Gibson and are practically the same instrument. All the old RnR greats played on what ever they could get their hands on and didn't worry about such things. @rustbeltgypsy3713

@Hickies Music Store depends on what tones you want. If I put Les Paul pickups in a strat, it will be similar, but different. More than likely the best way to go is find a wizard who would hand wind some good pickups to achieve desired tone(s) and be less expensive than a Les Paul purchase, that has Les Paul Pickups, and with have similar sounds. I had a Gary Moore Sig Paul and was absolutely gorgeous, but I never could bring myself to play the snot of her for fear of damage and killing value...but that's me...I'm not a rich man, and I think playability is much more important unless you have deep pockets. So I sold her for some studio equipment and bought 3 nice guitars and ripped on them and didn't have to treat it like an egg because $5000 is quite an investment for a guit fiddle that you want to play the crap out of but still at the same time, possibly use it to save your butt one day to have to sacrifice to pay a bill, save your house, buy or fix your car, something that is more important that a pretty ass guitar that looks and sounds good, and doesn't necessarily pay the bills or keep a roof over my head...if I was a touring guitar player where as it made me more than I spent..sure why not...but most people who have a Les Paul, are not...and treat it like an egg heirloom and never really open her up on stage , a jam, or even at home 120%. For fear of depreciation as explained. To each his own...if you got it like that, Grab that Paul and Play it like no tomorrow...otherwise Grab a Nice Epi and swap pickups. I would go hybrid with p90 neck p.u. or vica versa. Not sure...but even hand wound by the right somebody is just a badass sounding and original than every Les Paul that sounds similar (and mostly badass too)

Obviously no need to overpay to get the Gibson. It made sense in the distant past when cheaper versions of the same design may have been of poor construction quality. These days this is not an issue except with absolutely the cheapest guitars of any type and often the cheapest of the cheapest can be fine tuned to work ok.
@Fraggr92

If you've ever actually played a Gibson vs something like an Epiphone then the difference is immediate. They may sound similar in a lot of ways, but the playability and build quality is just night and day. It can't be compared. Don't get me wrong, Epiphone make great guitars, and for most people they're absolutely fine. But they simply don't compare to an actual Gibson. There is absolutely a difference. Whether or not that difference is worth the additional cost on the other hand... well, that's up to you.

They are 2 les paul shaped guitars but the cort pickups are wound differently to have a different voicing, so the uninformed/new guitarists that hear the comparisons expect them to sound better or worse than each other but it's more the pickups are voiced differently. My cort Les Paul homemade custom has that expensive body with a flying v neck with an emg pickup in bridge and a EMG single in middle and in neck it's a dimebag Darell Seymour Duncan single paired with a Kurt Cobain single so they're is a doubled up set which 2 single pickups paired it gets any tone I need for all my favourite types of sub genres genres and pre and post genres

The Gibson definately feels better in our opinion, string bends and vibrato feel very precise and the intonation is absolutley on point. The Cort did come pretty close but we have noticed differeing levels of quality from them when we have had different models in. That coud be said the same for gibson guitars too though! Its worth trying either of them out if you get a chance. Cheers - Sam :)

I can not tell if you have the two different guitar's set on the same pickups because of camera angle I guess. Are both guitars on the middle setting between bridge and neck? I would not think that they would sound that different. If both guitars are given the same amp settings and pickup , tone settings etc then point well taken.

A mistake was made in the this video, wherein I left the pickup in the middle position for the Cort, this was the last video filmed that day,- I thought it to be fairly throwaway content when we were just starting to grow the channel, and much to my embarassment, it became the most popular video across our entire social media. Here is a video however, of a follow up where I test both these guitars in a track, and use the correct pickup settings to compare. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7t5dst9vMqqcoU.html Thanks so much! - Sam
