I've always used Kenko CPL and UV, good prices, kinda like amazon basics, but i did notice the difference between with and without and not comparing UV with UV or CPL with CPL. Is that without, my pictures when zoomed at 100%, were more cleaner and nicer, not so much noisy kinda like. So i would say, if you have a nice expensive good quality glass like Nikkor 24-70mm for FX cameras, don't ruin the quality with a cheap filter, the image will be a bit grainy and it's a shame, especially if you are a perfectionist (like me) and you want absolutely quality.

A much bigger difference will be seen when shooting in situations where there is glare on the lens itself. The good coatings do help keep the lens reflections/refraction effects down and improve contrast in those scenarios. I used to be "team budget" with polarizers, but have changed my stance now.

It's always the same, isn't it? You can get pretty good quality fairly cheap, but the cost starts rising quickly when you try to take those final steps toward perfection. Personally, I stick with cheap until I start noticing its limitations. Nice comparison and some interesting and useful results. Liked and subbed, because I'm a real gentleman that way. 😇

Law of diminishing returns. Double the price does not equal double the quality. When you're starting out it's horses for courses. You wouldn't put a hundred dollar filter on a cheap consumer grade lens. Then if you stick with photography and acquire some premium glass, get premium filters to suit. After all, you wouldn't buy a Ferrari, then put budget tyres on it...

Nice test. Maybe a comparison of flaring, glaring and diffusion (contrast reduction) is useful. There should be a bright light somewhere in the frame. This is the hard part and where design and more expensive manufacturing should be visible. In addition to mechanical build quality.

The only problem I've had with cheap filters of all types, on many different cameras and lenses, is that the cheap ones have flimsy frames which can bind to the lens and be difficult to remove. Many years ago I bought a set of plastic filter wrenches which solved the problem and now live permanently in my camera bag.

Thank you for this test. However, I draw the opposite conclusion you do. Here we are with a big, big investment in cameras and lenses but look to save just a wee bit of money on the filter that will determine much of the resulting image quality. My criteria is that an accessory improve my photos and not make more work in post correcting it's defaults. So, I would go for the Hoya (or other high quality) polarizer every time. But, again, thanks for the excellent and useful video!
@rileyphotos

Hi Greg, thanks for your comments, we appear to be singing from the same hymn sheet. My conclusion in the video said “if image quality is important to you then the Hoya should be your base level, everything from Hoya upwards should be what you need”. To clarify I would recommend the cheap filter for those starting out or on a tight budget. Thanks for watching, and of course for optimal quality, should we be using a filter at all? Well that’s another question, I’ve done a video about that one 😁 thanks for watching Greg, I really appreciate it 👍🏻

While not extremely critical with a polarizer, something like a 10-stop ND can have a pretty big effect on color cast and overall quality. I've switched from B+W to Breakthrough Photography for both of these on my main camera and I'm really happy with the quality. I'm considering trying out the magnetic K&F set for my small camera as this would be so much easier for stacking and retaining the correct angle on my CPL. If I really like it, I might consider a more high end magnetic set for my main camera after I research the quality of the brands that offer magnetic filters.

The entire reason we had to switch to circular polarizers is because digital cameras' sensors do not react well to polarized light, so I kind of wander if the reason some of the polarizers have a color shift is because they are not as good at depolarizing the light at the back of the filter, and the camera sensor is reacting to the partially polarized light... If would be interesting to test them on a film camera, where that does not matter, and see if the color shift still occurs... I just realized that another way to test this would be to test if the color balance shifts when the polarizes is rotated... I know the reflections would change, but does the overall color change as well... If it does, that would indicate that it is probably the depolarization part of the filter that is causing the problem...
@rileyphotos

That’s a really good point James, because the filters don’t seem to have any colour variations in the hand, so something else is producing that colour shift?

@rileyphotos
@rileyphotos Жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, thanks for watching my video and for your question. In short, linear filters are not so good with auto focus so the filter companies made circular ones with are not affected by AF. If you have a mirrorless it will be AF so I’d recommend the circular polariser. Hope that helps. Cheers Phil
@chrisogrady28
@chrisogrady28 Жыл бұрын
@@rileyphotos This answer is incorrect. Linear only effects off-sensor auto focus. As mirrorless cameras use on-sensor AF you can use linear no problem, in fact you get better light transmission as there isn't the extra circular plate in there. These days though it's hard to fins linear filters, even though they are more suited for mirrorless cameras.
@JimH_4647

@@rileyphotos I just bought a B+W 'basic' that was £90 and I feel insulted reading the description of it where they say it's for beginners haha. The Germans just label things coldly, the basic, and the master. Difference is that the master has higher light transmission at the cost of less maximum polarisation, so the basic is better for my use case of window reflections. It would be nice to see these high end ones compared to the Hoyas but no one's done it.

I noticed a couple of things, and it could just be down to how you are using the camera, but the two things I saw are: The Hoya filter would darken the entire sky when you were using it on the sky, and the Amazon filter only darkened part of it. That could just be an adjustment issue as far as where you rotated the filter, but it looked to me as if the Amazon filter had a narrower polarization that would not darken as much of the sky. The pictures also looked noticeably sharper with the Hoya filter. That could just be down to the Highlight detail you were mentioning, but I thought it was details at most light levels that were a bit sharper with the Hoya filter.

It's one thing to say that they Hoya is £70 and the Amazon one is a little under £13. But when you can adjust the Amazon filtered pics with Photoshop, you have to take into consideration the cost of Photoshop which is anywhere from £30 to £50 depending on which Photoshop you get. So that places the Amazon filter up to £43 to £63 and with the Hoya, you didn't need to do anything with the pictures. The Amazon's good, but the Hoya is still in a different class.
