The ProCo RAT is one of the most recognizable pedals ever made. This pedal does searing distortion to woolly fuzz tones. But can you get that RAT sound by spending significantly less money? About 6 months ago I demoed the Rude Mouse by Sonicake and ever since then I wanted to shoot them out.

A strat was the obvious choice, but I wanted to demonstrate that they can sound good with other guitars.

@@ebahtimaikata I find not using too much gain is the key. Between 9 and 12:00.

A good comparison 👍 I think the rat is one of the circuits where a lot of the “clones” actually have improvements to the original. Some other original circuits still seem to have the edge but the Sonicake seems improved. It may be because the rat is “relatively affordable” in comparison to things like Klons and so easier to try and replicate?

I love the Rat. I think the knockoffs sound great. I have a Little Bear version which has the turbo, vintage and the You Dirty Rat in one pedal. The Sonic Cake sounded fine to me. ✌️🇦🇺

Amazing playing man - on a passive listen nothing jumps out as especially "choppy" or difficult to play, but it's because you make it look easy. You manage the gain sounds with left hand mutes and frusciante-style selective strings poking out from those muted in rhythmic ways. I think you nailed the incubus riff rhythm and even everlong style riff was worth paying attention to - you don't let your tenth fret E / D string note get out of tune, which everyone seems to press too hard and bend sharp. Nice work and nice detail to nerd out within your rhythm playing. I hear a thorpy warthog or plexi type sound in this stuff.

Thanks mate. I always try to play examples that sound good with the pedal I'm using. No point playing something intricate with a RAT, simple and chucky is the way to go.

agreed the rats eq range is ridiculous no mids 100% treble and slappy dry sounding

This past late winter/early spring in America. I first ordered a OD3 then returned. Drove to my nearest GC went with the current RAT. For $80-100 it’s a keeper. In my quest to find the right blend of distortion and drive for my Strat/68 DRRI that I like.

Love the shirt bruv. I am not far into the video yet but I would just like to weigh in that quality components are not always about sound quality but also longevity, and I suspect that the less expensive pedals are going to target the sound quality and short term benefits of the pedal vs the long term life span of the pedal, which is an area they logically could afford to devote less resources to. It allows them to win shootouts where the cycles of the foot switch or insulation on the small electronics etc are not going to be as noticeable. That being said, most of us are in it for the here and now tone and not as concerned about stepping on it in ten years.

Why is it that pretty much every RAT shootout has the cheap knock-off sounding better than the original? Even the JHS Show (who recently released a deluxe and expensive multi-RAT pedal) did a blind test that had the cheap Chinese pedal being declared the best. I've got a Mooer Black Secret, no complaints at all, expect for those mean tiny little knobs on the micro-pedals. Can't stand 'em.

How is it with gilmour tones? Is it as good as the rat even though less fuzz ? I take its not great with solos ?

Probably not. It's a bit more crisp than the RAT.

Hej! Sonicake låter jättebra, men i mina öron har Rat ett liksom "tjockare" ljud. Mer maffigt. Och en Rat är en Rat. Här i Sverige är det nu vinter på riktigt med mycket snö och minusgrader. Hos dig är det väl sommar nu?

The RAT 2 is not even expensive compared to every bullshit boutique pedal on the market. The Sonic cake may be cheaper, but it has that Donner-vibe to it, and I could see it breaking down within a years worth of use
