I am a hobbiest "welder". I have an industrial quality "Buzz Box" that does a great job with e7024, but its arc is too fierce for me (anyway) to succeed with e6011. Recently I purchased a DEKOPRO 110/220V MMA & LIFT TIG 2 in 1 Welder; it comes with a variety of settings, dig, rod choices, lift tig, it reduces output if a rod sticks, and has hot start built right in. What really amazed me is how easy it is for me to run e6011 rods, my Deko does a beautiful job. For me, at least, I made a good, affordable choice. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

I bought a deko pro on last summer. I’ve used it probably 20 times and have had great luck with it for what it cost. This was my first machine and I taught myself from your and other videos. I recently welded together a belt grinder out of .25 and .375 steel. Stuck it together great, however I’m sure it didn’t penetrate deep enough to be “structural”. I would save money and buy the same thing again for projects around the house. I will someday buy a mig and run gas for cleaner work but the deko is a good first welder.

The cheap ones might not work at all. Recently I bought one for like 80 $. I had zero experience with welding but this machine (Kraft & Dele) is just pure evil. It can't strike an arc, doesn't hold it very well and shuts down after 3 minutes or so. Adding output coil really helped (40$) + better (copper, another 20$) cables (longer arc, easier striking it etc.) but still can't weld for long. Also the numbers on it lie completely, in reality it's like half the current. So mayve Deko is ok, but most of these cheap machines don't have output coil and have aluminum welding cables and lie with amperage. It's not just a case with my brand, but many others as well. Might put you off welding + money wasted. So I suggest to save up some money and go for 200$+ and you save yourself a lot of hassle and nerves.

What about duty cycle? The biggest issue for me with the cheap welders is that the duty cycle on them is appalling, here in Australia I've seen them as low as 15%. They shouldn't be allowed to sell machines like that. That is a lot of cup of coffee breaks to let things cool down if you are working on even a medium sized DIY project.

I think that one item that should have been addressed is the duty cycle of the welders at the settings that were used as well as the duty cycle at the maximum power output of each machine. I think that this is a good measure for comparing machines. For example, does one of the machines have a 20% duty cycle at max power output while another machine has a 40% duty cycle at the same power output? For some folks, a short duty cycle may not be a problem because of the type of welding that they are doing but for others that may be significant. I think that you did a good job in showing the heads up difference on a wide range of welders.

I'm about ready to purchase a quality European stick welder. I have been welding for over 20 years now and have owned around 5 Welder's. I did dig in and bought a mid proffesional mig welder after welding stick for 20 years. The starter stick welder I bought perhaps 10 years ago had low quality handle and earth connection. My runs used to come out well and then started to stop halfway between welds. Buying a new earth may alleviate this a little although I switched to using the mig welder. I then bought low hydration welding sticks which I prefer as it gives a lot stronger welds.

I think the best deal in welders right now is Hitbox. Most of the cheap Chinese welders are basically the same. Hitbox is often a little cheaper. I have an Arc 200D mini which burns 6011 and dry 7018 without issue. Have not tried 6010 but I have no reason to. I learned to weld on an old A/C 225 tombstone years ago. The little Hitbox just runs great. I also have a Hitbox MT 2000 ii which I have setup for MIG. The Mt 2000 is multiprocess so I really don’t need the arc welder but the Arc 200 has arc force settings and the MT just, will stick weld as a function. Harbor Freight as much as I like them needs to re assess their welder prices.. I had a Harbor Freight flux MiG as they called it a decade ago.The old blue box. I hated it and was lucky to sell it. I bought a Century 140 MiG clone to replace it and that recently died leading to buying the MT2000

I'm a DIY car guy and working on my wrecked 2021 Honda Pilot, I needed to replaced multiple panels and following the instructions I put down "weld thru primer" between the panels, doing plug welding so I made my hole on top panel then use a small grinder to remove weld thru primer from spot... issue I am experiencing is that when I hit the gun, the tip of the wire creates a bubble and all the melted material stays at the tip and does not stay in the plug hole, sometimes I see the melted metal staying on top and weird thing it forms a small ball then it pops out like a pimple LOL, wondering if this is contamination from the Primer? However, I buy tools for life and in the future I won't feel the savings but I will feel the quality (or lack ther of) each and every time I use it. I buy a lot of used quality name stuff. It's not about the warranty. I bought the Rogue ES180i last december and love it. I probably would have bought the HTP if it were also rated 180. In my small experience. Generic Welders are functionals, but are fragile , they can be easily damaged with dust and heat. The internal frame get old fast and need maintenance. Some functions get inactive and the selectors get malfunction. If very cheap. They are very innacurate and very unstable in arc perfomance. Its better use or begin with medium level machines as JASIC or Esab for hobbyists. I used these welders and do good welds but need some skill and a open mind. I used Miller Dimension and its very predictable and precise. Idem for ESAB Tweco Fabricator, A versatile multiprocess but not very portable. (35 kg its too much for one user to carry) I Would Like to get a Miller Multimatic 200 but unfortunately get discontinued now. Maybe too expensive. But for ultra portable needs its great (I have a Handy Arc ESAB 160 amps 4kg and very tiny and has very good perfomance with 7018 but its too strong for 6011) Specially in light or residential projects. So. here in Peru if Miller cost X, Lincoln Cost 0.8 X Esab Cost 0.33 X , Jasic Cost 0.30 X, Generics Cost 0.25X or 0.20 X.. And if you want the tool for only one use , use generic welders, If you want hobby or prentice use , Get Jasic or Esab or a generic who you know to be reliable. And a Pro Use. From Jasic to Miller .

For someone who is starting out, but looking to be able to do some aluminum welding as well (which I do realize adds difficulty especially if you're learning) is there an affordable system that is recommended? For context, I want to be able to weld aluminum parts (where needed) for boats restoration customization. I'm just not sure what is recommended there, or where to start. I do have a buddy helping me, but thought I'd also get community input as well, to have multiple options to look at for what I'm hoping to be able to do.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 жыл бұрын
The two processes to look at for aluminum are MIG and TIG welding. MIG is good if you are doing a whole lot of the same joint, because it is faster. However, it takes some messing with to get the settings dialed in on MIG, so it's not awesome for one off stuff. MIG generally requires a spool gun and is also a pain for aluminum under 1/8" thick. I almost always use TIG for aluminum. TIG is great because it can be used on very thin to thick material and it is very controllable. In order to TIG weld aluminum, you'll need an AC/DC machine. TIG is also nice because the same machine can weld pretty much any metal with the same shielding gas, straight argon. MIG requires different gasses for different materials. Most likely, TIG is going to be the way to go for you. I have videos on TIG basics and Aluminum TIG on the channel which may be helpful. Wow, this is getting long, so I better actually get to the answer of your question :) As far as machines go, the price range will be higher than the stick machines in this video. Check out the Primeweld TIG 225X. It is a great entry level machine near the low end of the price range. I have one and it works very well. The machine comes with a CK torch (which is the best in my opinion), a great quality pedal and they have great customer service and stand behind their machines. It's not the only good option, but one that I have had a good personal experience with.

I have 2 multiprocess machines that I use almost exclusively for MIG. My experience with them is that they usually are great at MIG, good stick, but not the best for TIG. Some of the highest end multiprocess machines (Rebel 205 & Multimatic 220) are also good at TIG, though you definitely have to pay a lot for it. The specific TIG features that are missing in many multiprocess machines are AC/DC output, high frequency arc starting and pulse. I hope you enjoy the courses! Not necessarily. Some of these have the ability to run weird rods like the dreaded 6010, or some higher OCV electrodes of the 6011 flavor, e.g. Hobart’s 6011…

Great video as always! QUESTION: Can you PLEASE explain arc force settings on some of the machines? I have been told that 7018 electrodes perform much better (and become easier to use) when the "arc force" is set to more or less amount. Is that true? What exactly is that fancy setting intended for, considering it doesn't appear change your amp setting? THANKS!
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Great question. The arc force setting just increases the amperage from the set amount when the arc length becomes really short. This keeps the arc from going out by giving a bump in output. It has the most significant effect on cellulosic electrodes, like a 6010. My experience is that it doesn't make much difference with 7018.

Great job of explaining the extremes but I'm still on the fence. Sounds like a 160A dual voltage in the $200 range would be a good place to start. I was leaning towards a 110v 75A stick but am concerned the lack of power could be too limiting.. or also add a cheap 80A flux welder to cover my bases. No idea if I could even master a stick, if not there's the wire flux unit.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds Жыл бұрын
The first question is what process you want to run, which will depend on the type of work you want to do. For a lot of people, flux core is a better option than stick welding and I'd probably recommend starting there. The harbor freight titanium flux 125 (the little green one) is a nice little machine for the money. There are several other similar units as well, but getting an inverter with DC output is a lot better for flux cored welding.
@sscbkr48
@sscbkr48 Жыл бұрын
@@TimWelds The 160 dual voltage unit is stick. Not having done any welding I initially wanted to do general repair with no idea of what method is best, 110/ 220? Not having a clear vision of stick vs, flux but having the ability to weld whatever including some iron, stainless and maybe a little aluminum. I'm rebuilding an old wood trawler which has all 3. Mostly woodwork but welding skills certainly come in handy. Thanks Tim! Great instructionals, I appreciate the feedback.

The problem is usually just the lower open circuit voltage, but also the inductance of a transformer or engine drive is really hard to beat for those rods. Many of the newer inverters are better than the first ones, though.

The problem with smaller machines is the heat. if those machines don't have an adequate fan they will overheat. Thereby shortening the life of the machine. This goes back to what you need it for? Weekend warriors are not collectors; collectors are not Welding owner-operators and owner-operators are not KZfaq reviewers.

If you are serious about it then buy the best tool you can afford otherwise the learning curve will be unnecessary steep. Buy a great single purpose tool over a multi process machine for the same price... you get the best quality took for that one type or process you want to learn before moving on the to the next phase..

I love those old buzz boxes, and they are nearly bulletproof. I’ve had 3 over the years. With metal costs rising and electronics becoming cheaper, inverters have really become the new standard. In my shop, I have 9 inverters for the various processes and none have failed me yet. That being said, there’s no way they’ll outlast a Lincoln tombstone.

If you bought a cheap one, then a mid range one, then a good one, you spent at least twice what you would have if you had just bought the good one. I bought a Miller for 3-4x what I could have spent on the low end stuff, but as my welding has improved, I’m still happy with it. I do cheap out on some tools I know will be disposable but a welder? I say go big if you’re going to invest in the time it takes to get the skills.

i wish this guy would stop trying to push 7018 rods on guys like us who are obviously here learning the trade... because little do we know, you NEED to keep 7018 sticks in an oven as they go bad hours after opening the package ... something i didnt know before going out and buying some to "have around the shop"...
@TimWelds
@TimWelds Жыл бұрын
I’m not trying to push any type of electrode, use what you want. It’s just what I used in the video. They don’t “go bad”, they just deposit a little more hydrogen (due to moisture content) than they do when stored or reconditioned in an oven, but no more than any other type of rod stored in the atmosphere. This can cause cracking on thick sections in high strength steel, but all 3 conditions are necessary for hydrogen embrittlement and using a 6013/6011/6010 would actually be worse. I made a whole video about it.
