studies show that even wine experts have difficulty guessing the price of wines because the only difference is that people who drink wine for more years start to like a dryer stronger wine whereas noobs like sweeter lighter wines. its personal preference. and after about 5 years of aging the noticeable differences drop so quickly that the experts can easily pick a wine aged 5 years from a month-old wine but have difficulty telling a 10 year old wine from a 60 year old wine. good wine is whatever you like. its 90 percent price gouging and hype. people perceive it being better if you are convinced its more expensive. placebo effect.

All old wine isn't good. Even wines which are recommended to be aged often peak in the 5-15 year period. Beyond that they can even get worse in some cases. Wine (like most alcohol, eg beer) is generally bitter, that's an evolutionary response against bitterness (=rotten). Once you get over that though you'll often begin to appreciate the flavor profiles of complex wine. Of course, it's all your decision - some people prefer MacDonald's over a $50 steak.

Haha, my dad took a sip out of a wine bottle that he thought was one of his expensive wines but ended up being a cheap one my mom bought (she doesn't care). His entire face puckered up and he almost spit it out, like, "Ugh, Sanaa what IS this??" Shows my dad is spoiled on expensive wine.

i‘m two years late, but drinking expensive wine and doing it out of the bottle don‘t go together. also the tag on the bottle would indicate which wine it is before he drank it so you‘re story seems made up furthermore there are good cheap wines aswell

Yeah there is definitely BIG differences with certain wines. Some are much more sweet, others a lot more bitter, and some are heavily spiced (among other variations as well obviously). If they can't taste ANY of these differential factors they should get their taste buds checked...

The thing with expensive stuff like wine is that once you know the price you're probably going to try and convince yourself its good meanwhile you're basically forcing it down your throat, just because you know its expensive. Save your money. Buy that $4.50 wine.

I really like wine tests. The French Bordeauxs can be very expensive, they got huge estates in France. You also pay for its name, overprized like champagne, cognacs too, my opinion.

Almost all of America's wine comes from California (Napa Valley) so wine is super cheap in California.

The worst thing is when you try a wine at a tasting and it is delicious, so you buy it and then you get it home and it tastes like cat piss infused vinegar. Also, lol at the girl who said the chardonnay was riesling. I do not have a sophisticated wine palate and probably can't tell the difference between a semillon and a sauvignon, but chardonnay and riesling are so very different!

The thing with wine also is the smell and taste are in contrast. It has sweet smell fruity but when I sip on it just like how you describe it cat pissed infused vinegar. Well I only had cheap wine, maybe I'll get an expensive one soon.

Nope, I saw it come from the bottle. It was a late harvest semillion, and the one I tasted was light and a bit sweet and truly delightful. The one I took home was literally fizzy vinegar.

American culture tends to really love sweet things, which is why they preferred the cheaper wines. There tends to be more sugar content as opposed to the alcohol in more expensive older wines. Of course, that also has something to do with it in that the cheaper wines aren't aged nearly as long. Nothing bad about it, just an insight I had.

Put some $5,000 wine in their boxes and they'll sneer at it just the same, give me some Chillable Red Franzia any day over your fancy smancy wines. Put it in the freezer until it's almost frozen (to give it some tartness) and I can drink on that nectar for half a week

Thing is with expensive wines, you have to let them breathe! I know that sounds incredibly pretentious, but seriously, leave it open for a few hours and it changes the taste completely. If you drink them right away they just taste really strong and like vinegar.
