INFO & LINKS: The trip took 1hr 20mins approx, I left the airport at 3.55pm. I waited 15 minutes for the train at Lat Krabang but there is a timetable online. COST: Airport Rail Link train to Lat Krabang 15 baht, Train from Lat Krabang to Asoke 6 Baht, 136 bus from Makkasan to Asoke Sukhumvit 8 Baht. It's not ideal with heavy suitcases or young children! Proper backpackers should enjoy it, saving the cash and seeing the ''real'' Thailand! @@benmontjo Asoke Halt station is under the Makkasan Airport Rail Line station. So you have 3 stations in Makkasan all next to eachother with different names! MRT Petchaburi, ARL Makkasan, SRT Asoke Halt. To get to Asoke BTS you need to take the MRT one stop to Sukhumvit Station, which is next to asoke BTS. Confused?

Depending on how much luggage you have, switching to the MRT at Makkasan for 1 stop to Sukhumvit can be easier than going all the way to Phaya Thai on the ARL if you're staying around lower Sukhumvit. If you're staying in upper Sukhumvit, Ramkamhaeng station will bring you out around Phra Kanong Soi 71.

Tip: If you are hungry or thirsty inside of BKK airport, take the escalator down to the second floor. It's casual food court (need Thai currency) You are able to eat lunch/dinner for 60-80 baht with 20-40 baht drinks. The same floor has bus kiosk going to Jomtien Beach as well for 151 baht I believe.

Years ago there used to be special buses from the airport that would take you various parts of Bangkok including Sukhamvit Road. The buses went from the ground floor next to the food court, tickets were cheap as well. I remember it would drop you off anywhere on Sukhamvit Road you required , brilliant ! A lot less hassle than changing 3 times on the BTS transit system.

Another great video Pat. I recently travelled on the Airport Link from Lad Krabang to Maakasan. I saw two young European girls looking a little lost. They'd just arrived from Germany and were travelling before starting uni, back in Germany. They wanted to go to Klong Toei but wanted to save money by taking the bus! I took them down to the MRT and bought them two tickets to Klong Toei, for their safety as much as anything else.

To see, all those non tourist spots, gives me so many emotions about Thailand and Bangkok….I love this place, serious…I don‘t like germany (I‘m german)….I give zero shit to fake polished cities like munich or wannabe divers cities like berlin… Bangkok…each klong, cat and smile of some locals tells me „you are welcome here“. I even buy all my stuff rather in bangkok than here…not because the prices are cheaper (no they are not (mostly)). Walking in the rain with an umbrella like an old victorian gentleman, listening to scooter engines (they calm me down), eat some papaya, play pool with some strangers who share common interests… If I could, I would instantly migrate to Bangkok…learn the language, learn some local habits and stuff. Perhaps future home-office rules can make it possible to stay at least 2-3 month there…who knows.

The ARL to Makkasan, and MRT from Phetchaburi to Sukhumvit would cost not much more (35 + 16 = 51bahts), and without the hassle of waiting for the irregular SRT train and the risk of missing the Asoke Halt stop which has no station building. I used to always take the first train of the day from Suvarnabhumi to Hua Lamphong and then go from there. I'm gonna miss that train station

Awesome video and great advice! In 2008, I took an employee bus from BKK to a bus station near BKK. It only cost me 9 Baht to go to an area near Patpong. It was my first time in Thailand and I learned about it in Lonley Planet. It's about 35 Baht now!

Great stuff Jeremy! We all love a bargain. Lonely Planet seems a bit outdated now, l don't see anyone carrying them around. Do they have an app?

Nice video Pat. Informative, I use ARL right to Makkasan, down to the MRT to Sukhumvit then to BTS to Nana station. your way is cheaper though by a few Baht, enjoy your beer.

Wow, I definitely need to try this route not just for saving money be it more of an adventure love Thai trains, so much better then United Kingdom, Trians and services shocking here, I remember traveling from Bangkok to Khon Kean over night it was brill than Khon Kean to Nong KHAI great experience. ICE in beer is definitely a no no, but then again not a fan of Thai beer been totally spoilt living in Yorkshire to many great breweries, However they're some fantastic small craft breweries in Thailand but due the crazy Thai laws so expensive, which is shame Thailand should capitalise on the craft beer market... no ice needed just great beer 555

Thanks for the video, Pat. But if you don’t want to shuffle around between trains & Buses, spend a little bit more ( like approx an extra $.120 more) take the airport link all the way to the end of the line to Phaya Thai, change over to the Sukhumvit line ( green line) towards Kheha and you should get to Nana BTS in about an hour...

If you end up traveling the world looking for cats and history, keep this on your visit list: Al Jaddaf dry docks in Dubai. You can explore the Dubai metro; there's a station nearby.

I cannot believe you did that trip as cheaply as you did! While it’s not the only way to do it, it sure as hell is the cheapest that doesn’t involve executive hand relief for the cab driver! Well done, mate…hang on, I’m complimenting you on the video and I’m completely forgetting the “Miracle on asphalt” known as crossing at the level crossing before you got on the bus! Freaking amazing! I’m in the Big Mango for a very long while from October 6th on, first Leo is on me.

I look at the taxi queue, then head to the rail link. I must admit it never occurred to me before to head up to departures and ‘steal’ a cab that’s just dropped off! And as someone else commented on this route. So it’s Makkasan, walk to Phetchaburi, which takes you to Terminal 21. I’m sure I didn’t spend much more than an English Pound too.

A very utilitarian video for the ambitious traveler, however I think I'll recommend anyone just arriving in BKK just take a taxi an overlook this very ambitious, but not worthwhile trip. Just one man's opinion. Be well Pat!
