XTOOL A30 PRO Scan Tool (Amazon Link)
amzn.to/3Wo6lWU
Diagnostic scan tool review:
This XTOOL A30 PRO scan tool might just be the cheapest, most affordable bi-directional scan tool available on the market today. Not only does it include ABS automated brake bleed (Auto bleed) but it is also a full function diagnostic scan tool with full bi-directional control AND live data on all vehicle modules and systems. This Scan tool is extremely affordable (low cost) compared to the other full bi-directional control scan tools on the market today. The XTOOL A30 PRO scan tool is wireless Bluetooth between the VCI (OBDII port) and the scan tool itself. It has built in WIFI to make one click updates super simple and easy. The scan tool has both a touchscreen, and physical buttons in case your fingers are too greasy to operate the on-screen buttons. The device itself carries a 2 year warranty. And the best part is FREE LIFETIME UPDATES. That last part is huge. I can’t think of any other scan tool in the US that has full bi-directional control with free lifetime updates. This product could very possibly change the entire scan tool industry, like the Maxicheck Pro did 3 years ago with it’s auto bleed capability when no other low priced scanner offered that capability. This new Xtool A30 Pro might set the precedent for lower priced bi-directional control scan tools, and/or do away with annual update fees. But in the meantime, this scan tool would be hard to ignore for someone looking for bi-directional control in a low priced device.

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
There is some latency because of the Bluetooth connection but not much. The majority of the waiting time happens with any scan tool wired or not wired. Some of the wait time is the slowly reacting ECM in the car, and some of the wait time is the scan tool itself pulling up data files from within its own memory. Even a $5,000 Snap-on scan tool can be very slow. It also greatly depends on the vehicle itself. Scan tools may be very fast on one make and model and extremely slow on another. It can be completely random. Hope this info helps. Thanks for the comment.

BT wireless with WiFi updates, holy cow this is a real value tool for the cost. The processor is slow but that's just a byproduct of the very affordable price. As you said, updating the MaxiCheck Pro is a pain.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I agree the processor is probably slower than "normal" but then again, my 908 Autel tablet scanner isn't the fastest either..... and the Autel is 6-8 times the price. I do believe some of the delay (latency) when sending a command, or receiving live data is caused by the Bluetooth connection to the vehicle. Even on higher end scanners you will experience SOME delay on Bluetooth. The only good thing about a wired connection is faster data transfer. (less latency, or delay) Thanks for the comment.

I will be totally honest with you. They gave me this tool for free in exchange for a video. XTOOL never tells me what to say. Ever. Not even a single word. I try to demonstrate tools in my videos and let the view make a decision if they like it or not. I never directly tell anyone to buy anything. This tool is legit. It does everything I demonstrated in the video. If I had to give it a negative, it would be that it is a tad bit slow... but not MUCH slower than any other device. Every scan tool on earth seems a tad bit slow to me, regardless of price so speed of the tool isn't really at the top of my consideration list when evaluating scan tools. Thank you for the comment, Sir!

I have owned an xtool x100 for about 7 years. I would describe it as being only a little behind Launch. It's not good on my 90s BMWs often activating the wrong components or giving totally wrong codes.. However the Launch is not much better. (old Autel Maxidas is still the best on those cars) I have found some things that xtool will do that even a modern Autel does not do. Such as CBS correct number of resets on BMW. The updates have brought huge improvements over the years. I carry the phone app A30 version in my coat pocket everywhere I go. Nice to see a video that's not just the main menus.

Seems to be a pretty sweet scan tool. But just remember, "Bluetooth" is in and of itself, an "operating system" module, loaded onto the base OS. Which is fine, generally. That is, until that same base OS also has a "network support module" added to it, in the form of WiFi capability. Not here to "negative Nancy" this review (or this channel), in any way. You just have to be aware that once you give this tool access to the Internet, it then pretty much has "free reign" to reach outside your network to ANY server in the world. Just a heads up.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
You are correct. This is true with ANY device that has internet access, not just scan tools. This device only uses the internet to receive it's own software updates. There is absolutely no reason to be putting any personal or financial information on this device. Meaning.... there SHOULD be nothing to "steal" from you on this device. And lastly, if a person is worried that their WiFi password may be stolen and used to gain access to your network, or if some bad actor may gain access to your other devices on your home network VIA the scan tool, then simply create a "visitor" network on your home router and only use this device on THAT network, not you own network. And if THAT isn't good enough, then this world HAS major problems! If a scan tool on my home network is going to be the demise of me, then so be it! lolol. Thanks for the comment.

@@SlipFitGarage Great advice in regard to creating a guest login on to the network. And I had actually written much more (a short novel, actually 😂), in regard to the exact ways in which these (ie..all types) of imported Bluetooth/WiFi capable electronics can negatively effect other (mainly PCs) devices behind your firewall. Including an anecdotal nightmare experience I had, after briefly giving a brand named dash cam I bought, the exact same type of access. Then nixed it all, and just posted what I wrote. Lol. Suffice to say, it IS happening. Because our main "friendly" trading partner in the East, is turning out to be not so friendly at this late date. One of the points I also made, was how dangerous Bluetooth can potentially be. Especially on something that, if taken control of remotely (via an open network port, for example), could be quickly sent into a "critical state", and cause catastrophic failure in a very short window of time. Not just for the device itself, but for the entire environment it is present in. A prime example of this are the new LiPo batteries used for solar powering homes. Most are now featuring Bluetooth control with access via a smart phone app. And one aspect of that app's control is the battery's internal temperature regulation. If that particular app has network permissions, then that battery can be sent into a thermal meltdown, remotely. Even a small Lithium battery explosion/fire is impressive. What happens when it's a 200Ah unit, sitting next to five more of the same, inside a house. No more house.... Anyway, thanks for the reply. And remember, just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't really setting up ways to royally screw us when the time comes. ☺

If the pcm in the vehicle that you are plugged into monitors transmission fluid temperature, then it should display that data PID in live data. Right on Brian, XTool recently released the A30M. It appears to have very similar functionality to this model, except you must use your own cell phone, or tablet. Also the A30M can generate PDF "shop" reports with most of the vehicle data, (VIN, DTC's, recorded live data etc.). Hello, I briefly looked at the A30M and it appears to have basically the same functionality as the A30 Pro (like you said). And without pulling the A30 Pro out to take another look, I do believe it can also generate PDF reports. Those reports would be great if someone was running a shop and needed something to show a customer but as a private user they don't mean much to me. Don't get me wrong, I have printed a few reports in the past when I've scanned a friends car for example, but printed reports would not be a deciding factory, for me anyway. How was the user experience when sing the A30M cell phone based scan tool? I have used an AUTEL brand cell phone based scan tool in the past and it DID work, but it was constantly downloading files from the Play Store and it was very "clunky" to use. Half the time I wasn't sure if it was working, or if it was stalled/locked up. Hopefully the A30M has a better user experience. I suspect the price difference between the A30Pro and the A30M is strictly for the physical device (hardware) itself. I will say that having a stand alone device is nice because all vehicle software, for all makes and models is already saved to the device itself and it can be used without a internet connection.... you only need internet to download updates. With a cell phone based device, they're usually constantly downloading data while being used. Again, it's possible the A30M operates differently than when I had limited experience with the AUTEL unit.

If current advertisements for this exact scan tool mention injector coding and key programming then it's very possible that it does indeed do injector coding and key programing. When the large update came out this past summer for the D7, which added a bunch of new features and functions to that tool, its very possible they also added new functionality to the A30 Pro. I have a well cared for 99 Camry. My wife drives a 19 Hyundai Santa Fe. Is bi-directional control even worthwhile for my car? I know it will help immensely with her SUV, but since the Santa Fe is under warranty for a long while, I was considering a Blue Driver or some other less expensive live data-free update $100 scanner. From what I'm told, none of them will read my Camry's ABS module, including the Blue Driver, but can the A30 read an old ABS module that Toyota has locked everyone out of (the Blue Driver people told me that)?
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I would have no idea what a 1999 Camry's computer system is capable of unless I had a 1999 Camry to plug into, which I do not. However, OBDII came out in 1996 model year vehicles. So anything 1996 and newer is OBDII and if your ABS module has the ability to talk with a scan tool, then this tool should be able to do it. As for bidirectional control.... If you repair your own vehicle, then bidirectional control is ALWAYS nice to have. Not every make and model is capable of all bidirectional control functions, and older vehicles typically have less functionality than newer vehicles but anything is better than nothing when diagnosing your own problems. If you're just a guy looking to pull codes and then have a shop fix the vehicle for you then no, bidirectional control probably won't do you much good. Please do not take this as a negative comment but in my opinion Blue Driver is NOT the authority of scan tool equipment. However, they have a great advertising and marketing program and they lead people to think they are. In MY opinion, the scan tool in this video is FAR better and more capable than any cell phone based scan tools, including Blue Driver. I'm not going to tell you what to buy, that is your decision..... but in the long run you could potentially get more use out of the XTOOL vs the Blue Driver. Again, that is just my opinion. Thanks for the question.

I don't believe the A30 Pro has that ability. However, even on scan tools that do have that ability, it also depends on the vehicle you're plugged into. For example.... I can manually turn the ignition (spark) on and off in individual cylinders on my 2006 GMC pickup, but I can't on my 2008 Crown Victoria..... same scan tool. If the vehicle's ECM doesn't have that ability already programmed into it from the factory, the scan tool has nothing to command. It's not JUST the scan tool that runs these special functions, tests, and procedures. Thanks for the question.

I did the auto bleed on a 2006 GMC (same as Chevy) truck in the video. I'm not sure if it goes all the way back to 1999 but you could certainly email the XTOOL tech department and ask them. They are usually very good about responding. If you're working on a specific vehicle, and you believe the tool is missing a certain function, send them an email with your VIN number and if it's possible they will add that function and send out an update. Then, once you update the tool it should work great. I have personally had them add functionality to the tool. From initial email to updating the tool with the new function was about two days.

The other XTOOL scanner you're talking about that can wireless print are programmed to do that from the factory. Some people needed specific print drivers for the their specific printers, but the tools themselves were already designed for wifi printing. However, I do not believe the tool in this video was designed for wifi printing, regardless of specific print drivers. I could be wrong, I haven't spent much time with this can tool since I made the video but that is how I remember it, anyway. Thanks for the question.

You didn't do much with the transmission. Wish you would have shown it activating the valve body solenoids. In "live data", can it show the transmission line pressure?
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
I apologize for that but if I covered EVERY feature and function for EVERY make/model of vehicle on the road since 1996, my videos would be 674 hours long. Not to mention, I don't have access to every make/model ever made so it would be impossible for me to make that video in the first place. My videos give an overview of the product, they are never meant to be "in depth" unless I specifically say it's going to be an in-depth video. (Which I usually never do) I realize you may have the same make/model of vehicle that I used in this video, but most of my viewers do not own a 2006 GM 1500 pickup truck. Therefore, if I went into detail specifically about the transmission functions on this specific make/model, it would be useless information for the majority of my other viewers. There is a fine line between an "overview" video, and an "in depth" video. I try to give just enough information to show that ability of the tool, without boring the viewers with features and function that their vehicle may not be capable of. Keep in mind, it's the ECM in our GM trucks that allow a scan tool to control the transmission. The ECMs in other makes/models may not allow such function and then this same scan tool will not have transmission ability in those particular vehicles. Like I said, it's a fine line..... Sorry I missed something you were specifically looking for. Thanks for the comment. As for the last part of your question... My honest answer is: I don't remember enough from when I made this video, but I am ALMOST positive that it did show line pressure...... I am only about 90% certain of that so don't hold it against me if it does not.

I do not believe this tool does key (or FOB) programming. You would probably need to step up to the XTOOL D7. Of course everything depends on the specific make/model but GENERALLY the D7 does pretty good with basic key (and FOB) programming. However, when someone asks "Will this tool program a key FOB"? I have to wonder just what exactly do they mean. Are they asking if this scan tool can put a program INTO the FOB itself? (Some vehicles require the FOB itself to be programmed) Or, are they asking if this scan tool can simply pair a new fob TO the computer in the vehicle? These are TWO totally different processes. One requires a programming dock to set the FOB in while the program is being sent into the FOB itself by a fairly sophisticated programming computer/programming scan tool...... And the other thing requires a basic scan tool with basic key (and FOB) abilities. Again, this is totally make/model dependent. Key programming is an area that I do NOT specialize in so I have no idea which makes/models require which process so even if you told me your specific make/model, I still would not be able to answer your question with 100% certainty. However, one thing I do know for sure, the scan tool in this video does NOT program FOBs themselves..... You would get a better answer directly from XTOOL. You can send them an email. @SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
Scanners do not detect misfires, it's the ECM (computer) in the vehicle that is doing the detecting.... the scan tool is simply displaying the misfire data from the vehicle's computer. Also, depending what vehicle make/model that you're working on, some vehicles do not show misfire data and therefore there is nothing to display on the screen of the scan tool. Now, with that said, yes, the scan tool ALSO has to have to ability to display misfire data and I honestly DO NOT remember if this tool has that ability. I have many scan tools and I have honestly not used this particular tool very much since I made this video. If I had to guess, I'd say NO this tool does not show that but I could be wrong. @SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Regardless of what the scan tool says, if your make/model is not programmed from the factory to run an automated brake bleed in the first place, then the scan tool will not be able to command it. It has to exists in the vehicle's computer first before a scan tool (ANY scan tool) can command that function. It's safe to say that if you own a vehicle that has the ability to perform an auto bleed, then this scan tool should be able to command it. If for some reason the tool won't send the command, you can send an email to XTOOL and usually within a few days they will create a software update that will allow you to run the auto bleed. Don't get me wrong, XTOOL is pretty good, they have pretty much every vehicle capable of an auto bleed already in the system but sometimes a glitch or two may be found. In that case a simple email usually fixes the problem. Just remember.... it's the vehicle's computer that is actually running the auto bleed, the scan tool is just simply sending the command. If that functionality does not already exists in the vehicle's computer, then there is nothing for the scan tool to command. Thanks for the comment.

Can this tool customize things like the carista
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
Maybe. It depends on which vehicle make/model that you're plugged into. All those options that you are "customizing" are already programmed into the vehicle's computer from the factory. The scan tool is just allowing you to make the selection. The scan tool is not forcing the vehicle's computer to do anything that it was not designed (programed) to do. So for example: If you plug into a vehicle that does not have any customization options already programmed in to the vehicle's computer, then NO scan tool on earth will be able to change anything on that vehicle. However, if you plug into a vehicle that has some customization options available, then this tool MIGHT give you those options on the screen. Some scan tools do, and some don't. It's one of those items that scan tool manufacturers keep from cheaper tools to force a buyer into a more expensive scan tool. And honestly, I haven't spent any time with this scan tool in over a year so I cant remember if it has that function, or not. It's probably worth a quick email to XTOOL. @SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
If the computer in your vehicle already has a transmission temp data PID in the live data stream, then this tool will show trans temp in live data. It's impossible for ANY scan tool to display trans temp if the computer in your vehicle does not monitor trans temp to begin with. Scan tools can not show data that isn't there. And no, I do not believe it has any key programming capabilities. It's been a long time since I used this scan tool (I have many others) so I can't remember 100%..... but I'm about 98% sure it does not program keys.
@rainbowclouds66
@rainbowclouds66 Жыл бұрын
@@SlipFitGarage That makes sense (about the trans temp). Can you recommend an inexpensive tool that will also program keys? I paid a locksmith over $200 to program the fob and he didn't even do it right - this vehicle has remote start and he didn't program the fob correctly to take advantage of this. Now, pressing the lock key 3 times in a row on the fob seems to start the engine. I have already accidentally started the engine this way!!! It's not supposed to do that! The guy is out of business I can't find him anymore. But wouldn't mind being able to program keys for other vehicles too. Seems very hard to pick an OBD2 tool without having experience using these things. Regarding the trans, this vehicle doesn't come with a dipstick. I ordered one on Amazon and the instructions come with a chart for different fluid levels for different trans temps. Well it would be nice to be able to measure that temp. The dealer had the vehicle and left me with 2 quarts short on trans fluid, causing trans to operate only in low gear. Went to a trans shop and the guy hooked it up to an OBD2 device and showed me it was 2 quarts short!! Even the dealers can't get it right! I don't want to do everything myself, but it would be nice to have a tool so I can check others' work, seems like many "professionals" can't get it right! (In my case the locksmith and the dealer). The locksmith said he paid $5000 for his tool. Geez this is nuts, we're talking about relatively basic computing. I guess they have to get paid for programming configurations for hundreds of different vehicle computers, but still, these tools seem too expensive. Anyway I am still hoping to find an inexpensive tool for home use on several family and friends vehicles. Thanks.

Well, you have to remember that the vehicle you're plugged into dictates what appears on the screen of the tool. The menus, menu layout, and even the verbiage can and will be different from vehicle make, to vehicle make. That is why what you see when plugged into a Dodge, is different when plugged into my GMC. As for your EVAP system tests... it's been a while since I worked on a 2010 1500 Ram but I am certain that tool should run basic purge ans vent tests on that make/model. If you're not seeing those option, then I would suggest sending an email to the XTOOL customer service email and tell them what is going on. Can you reccomemd a scanner that will bleed the brakes on a 1996 camaro ? Most of the tools I found say they won't do a car that old. I wanted to get the Autel maxicheck pro but was told it won't go that far back.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
1996 is the first year of OBDII. Any vehicle made in 1996 or newer (with few exceptions) and sold in the US is OBDII all the way through to the current model year. Any OBDII scan tool or code reader should work with your car. Any OBDII scan tool capable of sending the Auto Bleed command should also work with your car..... However, not all makes and models of vehicles ever made are capable of performing an auto bleed. You must first understand that it's not the scan tool running the auto bleed, it's the computer in the vehicle that is actually performing that task.... the scan tool is just simply sending the command. So with that said, I have no idea if a 1996 camaro is capable of performing an auto bleed or not, but Considering that was the first year of OBDII, I suspect it is not. So, the short answer to your question is: Are 1996 Camaros capable of performing an auto bleed in the first place? If not, then NO scan too will be able to command that function. Think of a scan tool as a window looking into your vehicles computer. If auto bleed doesn't exist in the car's computer, then there is nothing for the scan tool to command. If a 1996 camaro IS capable of performing an auto bleed, then any OBD2 scan tool that is capable of sending the Auto Bleed command should work for you, including the tool in this video. Hope this helps, good luck.

Hi, Thanks for your video. I ordered this A30 PRO last week, ( I missed the discount. Not worried about it.) in order to bleed the ABS system on a 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. I'm Going to attempt it today. My only concern so far is that I charged the battery on Tuesday and entered my wifi passwords. I tried to turn it on this morning and the battery was completely dead. It's charging again now, I noticed it took a long time to charge the first time as now. We'll see, I hope I can get this vehicle back on the road. Thanks again!

Did you leave the scan tool on that entire time? My A30 Pro seems to hold a battery charge for a long time but I'm always careful to power it down when not using it.

@@SlipFitGarage That's possible, I'm still playing with it. I went through the steps for bleeding the ABS pump twice and then all four corners again yesterday. (This is all after two new different master cylinders, one aftermarket and now a new one from Ford.) To me it seems like the pedal is still soft, I'm wondering if there is something else I need to do with the ABS pump in order to bleed. Open lines maybe? This is my wife's car and it's driving me nuts. Thanks for your help.
@SlipFitGarage

@@kennethredding4616 Once the ABS bleed process has finished, did you then manually bleed the brakes the traditional way as to finish removing the air from the system? The auto bleed function is not the last step in the overall bleed process. The tapped air bubbles in the ABS module migrates into the brake lines where they can then be bled the traditional way. The auto bleed does not make the air disappear from the system, it only moves the trapped air from within the ABS module to another part of the system (the brake lines) when it can be bled out if the bleeder screws. Hope this helps. Thank you.

@@SlipFitGarage Yes, I bleed all four calipers again. It had barely any air out of the right rear. I took about five or six ounces out of each caliper. I have a used module from the junkyard on the bench, can't find a new one anywhere. The scanner didn't show any codes by the way. Thanks again.

I've bled so much fluid through this system I could sell it back to the store. I'd like to talk on the phone, I've bled the brakes before and after the pump being run by the scanner. Actually, I had each individual line open with the pump running with the scanner one at a time. Pedal is stiff after the pump runs then soft again on startup.

Well, it doesn't actually put a program INTO a key fob, like some vehicle require. But it does have some limited ability to program a car to accept a new key..... depending on make/model of vehicle.

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by status? This tool will display any trouble codes related to the ABS system, if any are present. Just like any other good scan tool that can display full system codes, rather than just engine codes like cheap code readers. The computer in the vehicle has to detect a fault of some sort before the ABS/Brake/Check Engine light will turn on and set a code. Thanks for the question.

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
@@kshipon1798 The only way for any scan tool to know if the ABS pump is bad is if the computer detects a fault and sets a trouble code. Then it's up to a human to put all the clues together and make the final diagnosis. Scan tools don't tell if/when parts are bad.... they provide data to humans who use that data to make a diagnosis. Hope this helps. Thanks

@joeydelmarsjr.646 Жыл бұрын
@@SlipFitGarage how much does it cost per car brand? or is there a annual fee for all car brands? I been told that thinkDiag2 is $99 per year to have access to all car brands and functions. once it expires your only left with normal obd2 scan tool, or you can purchase single car brands for $49 each.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
Both the A-30M and the D7 do NOT charge for individual car brands. The scan tool just works on anything that is "OBD2", which is any passenger vehicle (and light truck) sold in North America from 1996 or newer. The A-30M has free lifetime updates, and the D7 has 3 years of free updates. The updates cover all makes and models. If you decide to not purchase an update after the free period expires on the D7, the scant tool will still continue to function 100% at it's current software level..... you just won't have future updates for new makes and models. (or scan tool firmware) The days of paying extra for each individual car make and model are quickly dying. (and were short lived to begin with. Maybe 3 or 4 years, that I know of) In fact, that was really only a thing on low level scan tools... Mid to high level scan tools never sold updates by make/model.... at least none that I know of, anyway. I won't tell anyone what to buy, but I highly suggest NOT buying a scan tool in 2023 that requires extra payment for each make/model. I hope this helps. Thanks.

The A30 Pro has been $299 since I made this video. There is a bit of a shortage right now due to the chip shortage (like anything else electronic) but the price has stayed the same. I was intrigued enough to check it out on Amazon and I noticed there was an sample snapshot of a Special Function screen -- in this case for ABS Bleeding. I get that it's a Chinese product and there are going to be some translation errors but this is pretty bad -- especially when it's a screen warning about possible component damage: "ABS BLEEDING V5.12 - This product is used for ABS exhaust,Execution of this program may result in ABS Pump body damage,Please Follow the prompts carefully. If repeating a certain wheel exhaust or the entire exhaust process,Must wait for approximately 5 minutes ABS". I think I'll pass.

To each his own..... But EVERY scan tool from China has weird English and grammar throughout the device, not just the "special function" menu. You can buy a different scan tool only to find weird grammar in a different menu. The phrase "lost in translation" comes to mind. Also, don't let a standard warning scare you away. Most special functions and actuation tests begin with some sort of standard warning.
