Yes, you can do this... assuming 1. You have a reasonably reliable income of some sorts that is sufficient to meet your needs. 2. You have at least a rudimentary mechanical ability and knowledge. 5 yrs Boondocking experience With a Van and a travel trailer. 99% of my electricity is solar with a Honda 2000 for backup. In Arizona you can always find comfortable temperatures without traveling anymore then a couple 100 miles. I've done Florida through the summer and I agree it can be plenty uncomfortable. I've also done Arizona In the low elevation in the summer. Hottest I've seen is 126゚. Bob, boon docking can be done anywhere that there's room to pull in. I'm (unfortunately) on disability due to an accident involving a dozer and an excavator that I was involved in and though I worked all my life Social Security low balled me, as they do to so many and I'm forced to get by on a mere pittance. I've been in the parking lot of a theatre in the town I live in four years now without permission and haven't had a problem in that length of time. I've never met the people who who work in the theatre and I'm careful not to bother them. The theatre is sort of in decline due to the advent of DVDs and Blue Ray and this parking lot is emense. I try to be a good citizen and pick up trash as I walk my dog and I lay a low profile. The police used to come and check me out, but because I'm on private property I'm not in their jurisdiction, so now they come by once in a great while to do a welfare check and enjoy a cup of coffee with me! I'd prefer a quiet spot in the country, but I'm in a 37 foot long Bounder (same one as in "Breaking Bad") that gets roughly five miles to the gallon and my doctors are all here in town. If I need to put on water or charge my batteries I have a friend that owns a tire dealership who's closed on the weekends who will let me come and plug in and spend the weekend. His shop is only two tenths of a mile from where I am presently. It's a pretty sweet araingement, to be sure. Anyway, thought you'd think this would be an interesting alternative to the norm. I know that one day this may end abruptly, but This could be one for the record book even now. Thanks for all the awesome info and entertainment. Keep up the good work!

@@Palmtreepeace Thanks! I can use all the blessings I can get! You know, my life is always a challenge and I'd love to see the Rocky's from my window when I look out, but all in all the parking lot is a pretty interesting place and I and my dog, Bella have come to calling it home and I know fully well that dispite the down side, dealing with the Social Security Administration and the government's quirkiness I'm better off then a great many people. I try to help other folks where I can and be a good ambassador of the full time RV lifestyle and beyond that, I sort of play it by ear. Life is pretty good for me presently. Hi Lisa! I got up, walked little Bella, came in and made coffee, picked up my phone and there you were! No messages today, but your kind and encouraging response to a response I made to Bob Wells. Now, there's a guy with a following! Me, I'm just a guy in a parking lot. I don't travel or do much that most people would think interesting. I go back and fourth between here and my friend's tire shop, play with my dog, cook my meals, etc. I live an extremely quiet life and I have this feeling that if I were to produce videos most people would be bored to tears before they finished the first one. There was a time when I rambled all over the place, playing music in the streets and in bars all over the country, but even the tunes I play aren't in vouge anymore. They went out with the "folk revolution" and most aren't interested anymore. That was more then forty years ago. Since that time I was married and divorced, worked on our family farm (which doesn't exist anymore), did road construction, which led me into this situation and now I'm a full time RVer. Not too exciting, huh? I guess there's more to it then that and looking back it's been a pretty wild ride at times, but now I'm getting somewhat older, (soon I'll be 64) but I've calmed down considerably. Tell me, Lisa what do you do? Are you a traveler living in a motor home? Are you married, have kids? After several of these QSO's back and fourth I have to say that I'm curious. You sound like you're interesting. You're obviously interested in alternative lifestyles and travel. You seem to have a very kind heart, which is awesome. In this world today, while I know there are nice people out there, they're becoming harder to find all the time. What do you do in the way of work, or are you retired as I am? Are you related to Lenny (just kidding!)? You impress me as a thoughtful person, one with interests in common with mine. After all, you are viewing "Cheep RV Living". I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. What part of the country are you in, assuming that you are, in fact in the U.S. These days you never know! I might be corresponding with someone in, say the U.K. or anywhere else for that matter. I'd love to know! Well, at this point I need to confirm my reservation for the weekend at the tire shop and make an appearance and visit with the mechanics for a few minutes. You know, I once worked for that business (as an auto mechanic) and they're like family for me. And there isn't much opportunity for socialization living the way I do these days lol. So, again, thanks for your interest and your kind words and I hope you'll respond again. One can't have too many friends, you know. I hope you have a wonderful day and are blessed in every way conceivable! Take care!

After traveling across the country for five months, most of which was boondocking, I feel I am an expert also, having learned all the little tricks to save water and energy. I don't carry a generator, but plan to get one in the future, only to supplement my energy when the weather is bad and I don't have sun for a few days. My suitcase solar is good for a day or two of power. But I am not full time, so it works for me.

One of the ways I use to figure total watts to run everything in the rv is to use this formula: volts x amps = watts. Take my rv for an example, I have a 30amp 120volt plug for hooking up electric to my rv so 30amps x 120volts = 3500 watts. So to be able to run everything in my rv I would need a 3500 watt generator.

Good video!!! Also should have mentioned that, if you have one, a generator HAS to be used occasionally to avoid additional problems. My solar takes care of probably 99.5% of my needs (only reason it's not higher is I plan most higher need times for when the engine/alternator is engaged or I'll be in a campground) so I occasionally have an issue remembering to run my generator under load every 6 weeks or so to keep everything flowing correctly and smoothly.
@Rocki5pr
@Rocki5pr 5 жыл бұрын
@@fratermus5502 Have no experience personally (or heard specific anecdotal stories); but would assume so. As long as it's done on a regular basis, the generator only needs to be run under load for 15 - 30 minutes so it's more of a nuisance if/when your energy needs are generally lower.

I don't believe there is a minimum amount of solar with which to start out. You should start out with whatever you can afford. Over time, you can add to your system. The good thing about this method is that you learn to live with a solar system as you grow. I've witnessed a number of people dump a huge amount of money into big solar systems, expecting to live as though they were hooked up to a power company. They had “experts” install their system and as a result, they knew very little about how everything works. The end result is a very expensive disappointment. As far as the life of solar panels, I still have my original panels which are now about 20 years old, and they are still putting out amps. They are currently being used to pump water from my well.
@dennisbosworth3665
@dennisbosworth3665 5 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, I started out with a 60 watt panel. That grew to five of the same panels. But then, back-in-the-day, all solar panels were quite expensive. As humble as that 60 watt panel was, it taught me great lessons in power management. Today, I manage on 2.3 KW/hour but those long ago lessons still serve me well. But you are right, Frater Mus, cost is the main factor. What is wonderful about solar is that it can be cumulative - a little today, a bit more tomarrow, further down the road: another unit. It all adds up and in the process, for those of us who make that journy, we gain a little wisdom here, a little bit there, further on down the road ... well, it all adds up! @@fratermus5502

Great interview Bob, Jim is very knowledgeable about this lifestyle. I’m retiring and about to hit the road for a few months headed north. I am looking for a fridge, how is that Truckfridge working for you, how loud is the compressor when it turns on and does it turn on a lot?

I’m glad you drug that guy from his claim 700 watts is a good place to start. Also the power converter in your rv is about the worst way to charge your batteries. They generally charge at 3-5 amps an hour which is ok if you are plugged in for many hours but when you are running a generator you want to go directly to the battery or thru a battery charger matched to the output of your generator. 150 watts runs my ARB50 and led lights and charges phone, but nothing more. This is on a teardrop. On my class A I had 400 watts with 4. 6v batteries and powered all kinds of stuff. M

I'm on a very small monthly budget, literally roughly $600 a month, so I don't have a choice but to boondock, I'm just trying to figure out how to afford to get solar so I can. I have removed all my water tanks in preparation.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but solar panels also don't last for life and actually become less productive by 15 years.

I think it is way better to purchase off-grid land for like $2,500 and park your RV ,camper, tent, or whatever and save gas, tear and wear, nuisances, rules, ect... You save more money like that on the long run. There is still plenty of cheap off-grid land out there.

I've been watching your KZfaq channel for over a year now. You are quite amazing and so are the people that you interview. I often wonder and I've been looking for places that will actually help you convert a cargo van into a camping van any suggestions? I live in California

The only problems are those of the human created kind. We have zero problems, no matter what happens. Our perceptions determine how we live, and most people are conditioned to feel wronged no matter the severity of the "percieved" wrong, we can accept the reality in which always envelops us.

Seems like you are overlooking wind generators for RV'n. I will consider them as an addition to the solar panels. The wind turbines will be useful all day there is wind and on those cloudy days solar panels generate less.
