That was a very handy tip. Awesome! Keep coming with these good videos. Thanks

Great idea printing the box around the part to be molded ! Also its a great idea for just making a custom box for any part that is going to cast as you can make a very shape fitting box and save silicon.

Sweet, plus boxes leak if hot glue is not perfect. I really like this method. Thnx for the tips

Thanks for this. I was looking for unique candle molds- or actually how to make multiple lost wax castings for metal casting. I was in a quagmire in how to make the negative of the object I wanted to make.

Awesome idea my friend.

I wish I did this for my current engineering project where I have small parts, and now I feel compelled to just make a box to simplify my life (I had to clean all of the master models).
@haruruben5 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea, and you can use less silicone by making a very optimized box.. hypothetically you could make a keyed 2 part mold with this method as well

Hey, why you just didn't cast you piece using the 3d printed mold? What do you think about doing it in that way? I've seen some guys doing that for some pieces...

A mm and three quarters. That was the best measurement I’ve ever heart. You’re brain is mathematically like grown up with the father speaking to named metric and the mother named imperial :D.

Great idea. And what are the drawbacks of making 3d-printed molds out of, lets say, PLA filament? Why are silicone molds better?
@gordontarpley4 жыл бұрын
PLA isn't flexible enough for most types of molds. If the parts you're trying to cast don't have any undercuts it is possible though if you use enough release agent to prevent your casting material from sticking.
@orgonitechick24453 жыл бұрын
What software program are you using for this? I'm getting a 3D printer and want to make molds for resin casting for orgonite. Any suggestions would be most helpful to figure out how to go about this! Thank you!
@gordontarpley3 жыл бұрын
For this project I used Fusion360

Have you ever made a 4-LOM suit? I have never seen a replica. I figure the method for making a 4-LOM body would be similar to a C-3PO. A tutorial would be awesome.
@gordontarpley6 жыл бұрын
not YET! Love that droid and It's 100% on my to-do list . I do have a Threepio torso set aside to be converted into a 4-LOM. I was lucky enough to have access to screen-used torso and head (and shorts, at a totally separate location) and got lots of reference photos.
@sharmin835 жыл бұрын
Hi.... which option in simplify 3d you use to join the 2 bodies as one single piece to print.
@gordontarpley5 жыл бұрын
I haven't used simply 3d yet. What are you trying to join? Maybe try in meshmixer?

Hi Gordon, do you sell or make the neck for the EV-9D9, i have the head, but not the neck. thanks
@gordontarpley6 жыл бұрын
if you have a 3d printer, I'll post it to thingiverse sooon-ish. got to do a few minor tweaks. Did you build the head yourself or get it from a maker?
@Dane696 жыл бұрын
i have a 3d printer, i did buy this head from a seller on RPF some years ago. -thanks

Hey! Awesome video! What 3D printer are you using? Looking for one that prints that smooth! Tanks
@image001de4 жыл бұрын
No one?
@Ruggada4 жыл бұрын
@@image001de Hey man. You can either use a laser sintered/resin printer which print almost perfect or use a product coating on your PLA prints called XTC-3D that will add a thin layer of hard drying smooth resin over the layers from your print. Hope this helps :)

what silicon did you use ? and what spray release also ?

This is MoldStar 30 by Smooth-On. If I used any release with this it would be Ease Release 200 by Mann Release Technologies.

Do you have any post process smoothing of the print lines? I know even with low layer heights with FDM you still have minor layer lines. Or did you use your Form 2?
@gordontarpley6 жыл бұрын
I printed this on the prusa and print lines were pretty minimal. I typically use a thin primer, usually Krylon. For this project it more than did the trick. for more detailed parts it would probably take a little more fine cleanup. Going to do a video on primers this week. ;)
@christopheradamson66035 жыл бұрын
@@gordontarpley sorry for the newb question, but are you saying you primed, painted and sanded this part before filling with the silicone?
@christopheradamson66035 жыл бұрын
or did you just spray primer, let dry, and then pour the mold? thanks for the help!
@ThatJay283 Жыл бұрын
would it be more efficient to just print the mold?
@gordontarpley Жыл бұрын
Depending on what material your castings will be, yes. Essentially what I did here was print a mold, to more easy cast another mold, to make more robust castings more quickly. Magic time!

Makes finishing and cleanup of the 3d printed part a pita for super clean lines and to get rid of layer lines.

Probably for some shapes. For this part it was totally fine.

I TOTALLY LOVE the idea, don't get me wrong. I'll definitely be using it and making the mold box separately for sure.
