it's honestly kind of mesmerizing to watch the cheats, there's something beautiful about seeing a bot perfectly dodging everything, like its a tas speedrun at the same time, what the hell is even the point of playing the game if you automate the only actual fun part of the game

I haven't played ROTMG in years, but the whole "1 life for 4 spd" thing kind of blew my mind. I remember having to do full inv's of Def Pots, sometimes even more, just to even get one. The inflation is crazy.

I think the main thing with it as well is that people (like me) spend some time learning new endgame dungeons that come out and then have a nice sense of fulfillment when we can complete it for the first time so seeing people with best in slot items who don't actually learn it and just cheat their way there takes so much out of this "hardcore permadeath" game.

Honestly, I think one of the biggest impacts from cheating is it'll skew any Analytics that impact further game decisions. If 50% of the player base can clear the hardest dungeons, then it's not hard enough. But if only 10% clears are legit, in reality that dungeon is a perfect endgame dungeon and the next dungeon should help train players on mechanics they'll see in the hardest one. As much as I've enjoyed realm over the years, it suffers chronically from many design flaws, not just the ones that make cheating so accessible.

As a hobby programmer, ROTMG looks like a fun game to create cheats for. Almost no anti-cheat and a lot of spaghetti code that allows for stuff that should never be possible. It's like a puzzle box with endless possibilities. I can see where the cheaters are coming from. Not to say this is good in any way. Especially if it impacts other people, that's when stuff gets nasty.

From a tech standpoint, the coding that goes into this is really cool. Reminds me a bit of the Baritone bots you'll see people use in Minecraft. From any other point, it's just a hacker.

I used to play RotMG so much man. I was part of a great guild, joined discord Runs, and eventually started going for High Fame characters. I defs had some ego, but I legit thought I was nuts at playing well, got a top 10 archer with 100k alive fame. I quit this game years ago because it all meant nothing to me cause I couldn't trust that the players i was competing against were legit. I was so excited to hear they were gonna get rid of cheating man. Just a garbo promise. Glad to see people still care, wish the best of luck

It's honestly criminal how Exalt did nothing to fix the fundamental issues that RotMG continues to be plagued by. It was such a hackney rushed job that I honestly think it made the hacking problem infinitely worse. Just as a reminder, Exalt did jack diddly squat to anything server-side, only the client was remade from scratch. This means that while everything still runs off the same eons-old janky XML code, the client is more cheater-accessible than ever due to it being made in Unity. On top of that, most of the post-flash additions have been things that were already possible in flash. In my opinion, DECA seems chronically afraid to touch anything relating to server-side code, given how we haven't had any form of actual QoL gameplay changes in the past couple years. Everyday I wake up and pray that today's the day that they give us grenade landing indicators and remove fog of war. Unfortunately, that day never comes. I really wish they had the nuts to actually rewrite the game in a more accessible language, cause then we'd be having not only more frequent new content, but also more crazy innovations and mechanics alongside them.

Agree with this video 100%. Part of the fun of rotmg is the difficulty. It's very demoralizing to see cheaters dominate the leader boards and have the best gear. Part of the fun for me back in the day was the competitive aspect - now there is literally no point. Nowadays, I just turn on opacity to max and play the game like it's solo. Honestly though, I can't blame others for using cheats because they are so readily available and deca does not do ANYTHING to prevent it. This is on DECA to fix it, and it will be on DECA when this game slowly dies because the game quality deteriorates.

I feel like a bigger issue about the game is the amount of focus on endgame... All the new content is aimed towards players that already spent years playing the game while new players have to deal with dinosaur-era dungeons and events that they can't even participate in due to the skill requirement.

The auto dodge thing and bullet trajectories were things that I had thought to myself while playing the game and how it would most likely be possible to make a cheat for (since the machine knows your exact hitbox down to the pixels and the bullet's, making it possible to correct whenever you would overlap with it) but always kept it to myself in hopes no one would make it a reality. Naïve me, someone already had the same idea and made a cheat for it... Not only that but recently I came across a cheater using what i can only describe as the exact thing shown here, judging from what he said and how he played.

I feel like if Deca gets rid of the hackers, the game just dies because they stop "playing" the game.

Also ironically I'm having my own futile content fight against cheating in Pokemon exactly right now with the world championships. Can't play CoD anymore since there's a cheater in every lobby. Gaming is ruined by losers, man

One factor that I have worried about for a long time is the degree to which new endgame content is balanced around the cheating players. Myself and some of my friends take a lot longer to learn endgame dungeons just due to the time requirement needed to make characters for them, and to be honest I feel kind of left out when others we know can go and get cool new gear by turning off the bleeding status effect and auto nexusing. I understand that the endgame doesn't have to be for everyone, but even on the community level I have witnessed venomous arguments about the topic of cheating. It hurts to have that kind of heat around a game that I have loved for years, and I also understand that some cheats make the game more accessible for people, and more enjoyable for those who have a tougher time getting over character deaths. Even though I am on the side against cheating I can't even say that it's 100% negative just because I've gotten the opportunity to meet some wonderful people who wouldn't have played the game without them. All this to say I hope that DECA gets the message that the ROTMG community loves its game and just wants the best for its longevity. It would be incredible if we didn't feel like they were using funds from our game to expand their company to other games that they might neglect. Godspeed.

I think people start cheating because end game dungeons are really hard and the time you spend learning for some people is not worth. Also the discord runs ruined the game, if you get more than 5 people on a end game dungeon you got lucky. The game is not casual anymore, either cheat or join discord runs. The satisfaction I got after finishing MV solo is WAY better than cheating or joining a discord. While I do like hard dungeons like MV or O3, the absurd amount of projectiles and micro dodge being the main part to stay alive makes me sometimes don't do those dungeons.

I have 10k hours in this game and played since 2011... i had one goal before quitting the game. Obtaining a orb of conflict so i would have gotten all event whites in the game, the orb finally dropped after more than 11 years and ive quit the game since.

So sad the state of realm, I remember playing sick from school and spending all day trading from a spd to a full t11 set, when a sky splitter was a life 😩

so why is cheating in realm wrong? i’ve asked around and most people just say “you are an idiot if you think cheating is ok” but some reasonable people actually pointed out economy market problems and leaderboard problems, but if a cheater chose to not mess with the economy or cause problems with the fame scores and regularly let’s the character die after keeping their items, then what negative impact is there? most people just say “cheating is cheating” but if someone hacked the game client to turn the text box color orange, then nobody would care, even though it’s still hacking. both have no impact on others. can someone please help me understand this? i’ve used a hacked client the past 2 days so i wanted to see if their was a good reason i should turn it off, which i will definetely do if it hurts others

what blows my mind the most is that there are bots IN NEXUS advertising hacks.... like a new player first thing u see as u hop in nexus is a bot telling u to hack.....

i started off in realm as a cheater, but i easily got bored of playing. I stopped using cheats, and let me tell you i may die and lose my oreo on my pally but its the reason i can look back and be like i had good memories with that item such a fun and good item. Which makes the reward feeling 10x better. Can't wait to get another oreo who knows lol. I have a reason to play realm now, and learn it instead of using auto nexus to carry urself. Just stop cheating and play, you will feel better and actually have fun wasting your time on a video game instead of cheating and getting bored pretty much instantly. A friend showed me Rotmg, and he was a cheater pretty much why i cheated. No longer friends with that guy

I can somewhat excuse the typical cheaters (auto nexus etc but not like I condone it) as it still requires some amount of skill to actually beat a dungeon but to get the game played for you zaps out all potential enjoyment.

Honestly, idk if this is just an extreme on the spectrum, but I leave all my glife and gmana on the ground constantly, I’ve played only ppe for years and don’t need the pots when I’m not maxing other chars, maybe I’d pick them up if I could trade them for something but I don’t know if I see that kind of change happening, unless I’m just extremely out of touch with those who can’t consistently finish endgame dungeons like shatters or O3

I don't like permadeath in this game. It is undeniably a unique thing that has made and continues to make the game what it is but the game as it is right now is just me dying over and over again feeling like I'm wasting all the free handouts that the devs give me unless I do some boring crap like wait for an event and sit in a discord while some guy shells out to deca so I and forty eight others can farm loot. And while with every death I learn a lesson, I also have to make another character, and level them to 20 in the same lowlands, and get good gear out of my vault for them (or worse, be fucking useless until some good gear drops), and farm pots from the same godlands dungeons until they're maxed. I could not deny that I have been very tempted to use autonexus or some type of cheat like that to make dying less awful, but then if I do that there's no game left for me to play. There's just no winning here, I think I just don't like this game anymore.

They might discourage hacking such as auto dodge if they had some practice mode for some of the bosses.

ive used auto nexus back in the day auto nexus helped me learn a decent amount theres only like 2 hard dungeons in the game it felt nice converting from using auto to not even needing them. i watched this video to get updated on this game tbh see whats new doesnt seem like anythings new this state of the game is fine i dont think people should be focusing on the what ifs it is what it is this is your current game ive seen so much people arguing about cheats more then actually just focusing on themselves and enjoying the game as for the direct connectors ive never done that and yea that kind of blows idk realm is weird i dont think auto nexus is terrible for learning the game i actually know a lot of people who used auto as a kick starter to get better now those people do like runs without it dont think anyone should be mad about auto shit anyone with under 180ms reaction time can just autodangerous situations anyway the only time you even die in realm is when you arent aware of a mechanic or insta pop then you go waste meaningless time hitting lv20 and getting 8/8 again which btw requires 0skill just a time sink so yea idk hoes mad

I use a client to change some settings for better visibility and a larger cursor. I think the reason they can't do anything is because while some people use clients for non nefarious purposes others use the same client to do this.

I was cheating when i started playing the game. I was so afraid of dying that i had autonexus (hack was nexusing when below certain % of health). Even though i was cheating i was really bad. I have never got something maxed while cheating. I felt that wasnt ok and started playing without them and thats when i made a huge progress. Yet i was using hacks for autonexus, i dont get using other hacks like autododge? Where is the fun?

Honestly I don’t think the issue is cheating. The game can’t really be played casual anymore. You have to try hard and memorize dungeon patterns and do way to much. You can’t pick it up and play for an hour and have fun. The reason why it’s dying is it caters to the top 1% like you making every dungeon harder and more time consuming while being less rewarding. Hell even the pet nerf was something that blew my mind. I spent tons of hard worked time to level up my pet then bam pet nerf and now people just easily either pay to win, or get free crap. And people want to comment about how it’s fair and whatnot, but that’s because people spam BOUGHT keys and pile up in dungeons. You can’t casually go into a non crowded realm and play for fun

The thing people always overlook about cheaters is that ROTMG is somewhat a competitive game. We don't play directly against each other, but similar to golf we're always trying to play better and achieve more than other players. if you struggle with shatters and see others do it with ease it makes you feel bad, and want to get as good as them, but knowing there's this pervasive cheating makes it feel like you're competing with a TAS bot.

This used to be the game I played all the time; I could complete everything and even was one of the first people to complete true umi. Yet the cheating ruined my motivation to play at all since the worst of players could achieve the same feats and never die once.

Nice, there is no anticheat but I got banned for “third party tools” back in 2021, yet I didn’t use clients at all…. I even opened a ticket and they wouldn’t tell me why I was banned other than “third party tools”.

Going to be open, I used to use autonexus. However I would never fw IP connection, literally the most annoying thing ever, pushes random people to download hacks too. I used to get nervous to the point of uncontrollable shaking when doing dungeons, autonexus let me enjoy the game alot more. Not to defend hacks, but to explain why i used them. Because yeah, like seb says it inflated TF out of the economy. I remember when i first joined rotmg and everything was so coveted and trading was actually so enjoyable i feel like. and now seeing how advanced these hacks are getting its like WTF how is there any enjoyment in that anymore. even with JUST autonexus i got bored and deleted it after a month or two

Im so glad me and our guild stopped playing this game. It only appears the fire is spreading, while an earthquake is creating a larger hole to fall down in. The only purpose of the guild fame is simply just decorational purposes, while games like RotF made the smart move of boosting loot drop and xp/fame gain, which was very neat. It lost the charm it had and I can see it with the new endgame machine dungeon. I just wish RotMG gets sold off to a 4th company and hopefully they will put some love into it

The one benefit to the proliferation of these cheaters is that it makes it more gratifying for legit players knowing they can do the difficult shit without cheats. Knowing they're BETTER. The economic issue is more pressing, however. It wasn't that long ago that WC tops sold for 2GL regularly. Now theyre given away for free half the time.

I've played the game since late 2013 and quit a few years back due to the state of the game not being changed since kabam in a way. Same cheaters and expoliters were still roaming and playing as if nothing actually changed. Decas response in the matter was to push out more skins, st sets or random events... I knew a lot of cheaters back in the day and most of them didn't get banned but rather just quit. Now adays rotmg is just discord runs with cheaters helping them behind the scenes. Sadly Deca most likely won't put in the effort of rebuilding the game. A simple anti cheat (similar to the val one) could fix it but probably won't...

hmm...this is why I play GAS instead. At least until people come up with a hack client for that. But even if, I think Rob cares about the community enough to do something about it.

Another way cheats ruin the game for legit players is diminishing their achievements like base fame or amazing armor sets by having those things being way, way easier to aquire as a cheater, in turn making those items feel less special

When I first played realm like dating back to maybe 2015, I used to rely on cheats because I was just bad at the game and it's just way too convenient to download a hacked client. And as soon as I heard about Rotmg Exalt, I weined myself off auto-nexus and no-confuse, because it's always been on my conscience to do so. Been clean ever since before the launch of Exalt, and the game has gotten so fun. Imo i don't really mind the hackers just because i'm nowhere near the top of the chain, and i've got nothing to prove, I get that it's frustrating for people trying to stay on top and being beat by some nobody with a client though. Sort of a nothing-comment hahah, just wanted to share 💛 sorry i didn't really contribute to anything here

I use to cheat back in the day and i don't care admitting it because why not (if you genuinely are sad please get a life), but i really agree with what you said about the risk of cheating. I made my account in like 2015 when i was really young and had it till like 2020. 5 whole years of that game. and i lost everything because I was caught duping in that uss2 scandal. If i had not been a cheater, i would not have duped, but because i already had the mindset, I duped without hesitation and lost years of progress and history. - weird analogy/side note but its sort of like a pedo who watches cp online, is more then likely to become a child predator irl. Anyways, i'm grown now, and play occassionally without cheats and in doing so i learned 2 things. 1. the cheats weren't worth it and you feel better gaining stuff legit, and 2. The game isn't actually hard, and dying isn't that mortifying. The whole reason i started cheating back in the day was because i sucked and literally couldn't max a single character w/o dying by 3/8. But "in my defence" the only way to get life back then was like tombs... but moral of the story, cheating isnt worth it, it wasn't worth it, and it never will be worth it. Literally once you let go of that emotional attatchment you have to your fictional video game characters, you will start to play for fun.

a lot of this wouldnt happen if you could practice exalt dungeons etc without losing a decent character and having to grind hours to get it back spend 5 hrs to get a char to 6/8 in early game, go try some hard dungeon, die, repeat until you can do the boss, and then your main char dies there cuz its still hard so u spend longer getting it back what kind of gameplay loop is this and they dont add much early game content anymore, its exalt dungeons, so new players get discouraged by going into godlands and dying, or sulf wetlands or whatever and dying again and again cuz there isnt really a good guide in game, and then dont touch the game again

I still standd by my belief that the best way to fight cheaters is to make the game more accessible you cant make the game perma death and a farming mmo and expect people to give hundred if not thousands of hours to become able to solo most end game dungeons especially when the game requires constant money support to keep servers running and deca interested in updating and supporting the game. Either they speed up gameplay loops or give non perma death options to players. Anti cheat or rewriting the code ia a pipe dream given the way the game has been handle and how they purposefully add mechanics that are broken or incomplete to incentivise players to spend money.

i fully agree, i invested in the game fully becuase i wanted them to have more funds to combat the cheaters, but it seems like almost none of the funds went to that.
