(28 Dec 1994) Russian warplanes resumed bombing Chechnya on Wednesday (28/12)
after leaders of the rebel republic refused President Boris
Yeltsin's offer of peace talks. An orphanage in the Chechen
capital Grozny was destroyed in one raid. The blast blew out a
crater in the front courtyard of the orphanage, causing the
six-story building to collapse. No one was injured. But south of
Grozny, a Russian attack on the village of Urus-Martan claimed
casualties. There was also fierce fighting in the town of Argun,
15 km (nine miles) east of Grozny. In a television interview on
Wednesday, rebel Chechen leader Dzhokhar Dudayev said that the
Russian government was in a state of chaos and Boris Yeltsin had
lost control. He said he anticipated an increase in Russian ground
and air attacks over the next three days.
