A bike wheel rim can usually be repaired if it's only slightly out of true. If there is a more serious 'dent' in the rim, then it will have to be replaced. People often leave the task of trueing a bike wheel to their local bike shop, but once you know the procedure it's easy to do at home. You will need a spoke key and preferably have a wheel truing stand. If you don't have one of these, you can put together a makeshift truing stand by lashing a pencil to your front forks.
This is a long guide, so you can choose to either watch the entire video above, or follow it in smaller chunks by clicking on the individual steps below.

Steps to Check And True A Bike Wheel:
00:06 Remove A Bike's Front Wheel With Quick Release Skewer
There are two types of fixing for a front wheel. Hexagonal nuts threaded on a solid axle, or a quick release skewer system that runs through the centre of a hollow axle.
03:09 Check The Truth Of A Rim On A Bike Wheel
The rim of a bicycle wheel needs to be a round circle and a flat disc. This gives a comfortable ride and is most important if the rim is used as a braking surface.
03:47 General Information On Adjusting Wheel Spokes
wheel spokes connect hubs to rims and their tension keeps the wheel in shape. The tension can be adjusted with a spoke key.
05:40 True A Bike Wheel Rim To Make It A Flat
If a rim is not a flat disc it will appear to move from side to side as it passes through a rim brake or goes by some other index point. You can true a rim by adjusting the spoke tension.
07:59 Check The Dishing On A Bike's Wheel Rim
The wheel rim of a bike needs to be centred. The centre line of the rim must be exactly at the centre of the hub, halfway between the lock-nuts at either side of the hub.

Some people are proper teachers. This man has one the best vids on the topic because he uses method and technique that all good teachers use: organized content, repetition, cautions and clear, uncluttered language. An excellent bit of tutoring!

Actually, I think the repetition in this video is very badly done. It's a literal copy-paste job, which is lazy and unnatural and makes people want to skip. The same 30s section on stressing the spokes between adjustments is spliced into the video three times. There are also a lot of very slow sections where he spends a lot of time showing us very basic things: 20s of taking a tyre off, 30s of putting a wheel on backwards, telling us to loosen all the spokes, doing three while he's talking and then redundantly showing two more after he's run out of things to say, etc. The video contains lots of very useful information and the presentation is very clear but I think about a third to a half of it could be cut without losing any actual content.

Best wheel truing tutorial I have ever seen. I have been repairing my own wheels for over 30 years. I have made every mistake imaginable before perfecting the best method. I wish I had something like this video back when I started. The Internet does have its uses after all. Thank you so much for sharing this you absolute legends.

Excellent. The most comprehensive I have seen and very clear. Have not seen the tip about deflating the tyre anywhere else or the pencil and rubber band as a guage. Much more precise than using a brake pad, though this is OK. Thank you.

The best way to learn wheel repair is to build new wheels from scratch!!Youll learn how all the parameters are involved and how each adjustment effects ALL THE SPOKES. Understand that stock wheels are machine built and many important assembly steps(for good strong wheels) are left out in the name of COST. Probably the best you can do with these wheels is completely detention, retention and true them,Or disassemble and then do it correctly. I always say do it right, do it once! Otherwise youre wasting your time. Even spoke tension is the MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT of wheel repair and wheel building. If attention isn’t paid to this the wheel may not stay true or spokes will break. You CANNOT simply turn spokes on the wobbly sections and expect the wheel to stay true. The best way to measure spoke tension is with a tensionometer. Park makes one of the most affordable. If you dont have one, pluck spokes like a guitar string with a fingernail. Listen to the tone. All spokes on each side of the wheel should have the same tone within a musical note. You can compare your tone to a known, well built wheel. All spokes have a maximum tension and a recommended tension range according to their gage and material. You do need a decent ear for tone with this method. (Im a musician) Ive built wheels without a tensionometer for many years. When I finally got mine I checked some of my older wheels. My tone truing was within 5%. I taught myself to build wheels using Jobst Brandt’s book ‘ the Bicycle Wheel’. This is the old school bible of wheelbuilding. It also explains the physics of a spoked wheel structure. Sheldon Brown has good references on the web also.

Mickey Mouse Well it doesnt hurt to have a little patience, mechanical inclination and understand some math. How do you know you can't do it if you've never tried? Seems kind of 'defeatist' to me! Learning wheel building teaches the dynamics of the spoked structure and is the best way to learn how to simply repair wheels, true them and replace spokes. I realize these things arent very valued skills these days. I realize wheelbuilding is not for everyone. Not a lot of people are very interested and thats why the bike industry gets away with selling so much overpriced junk to the unknowing suckers! That's why I've done it as a small business for 30 years and it pays for my cycling habits and then some! I give my customers actual and real value for their money. I refuse to build or sell junk. I build things that can last a life time if cared for and reasonably ridden. I build exactly what my customers NEED and I stand behind my work with a lifetime truing warranty. Wheel-building is just the next step in becoming a better bike mechanic after youve mastered the more basic tasks. Ive taught teenagers to build wheels! Its not rocket science! (Ive worked at NASA too) These kids had the motivation to learn. Mostly because just like myself, they were short on cash! Wheel building is simply a methodical process for the most part. I taught myself years ago by reading a book and with a little critique from 2 wheelbuilding masters. Now I'm learning how to braze, weld, cut and form tubing and collecting the tools for that. Then I can build bikes EXACTLY the way I want them. There's always new stuff to learn. I'll certainly never know it all!

When truing it is better to loosen the spokes that are too tight first, and allow the rim to be true. Tighten later, if needed at all.

This is a serious video. No this or that. Straight up front. Nice one. Just get down to it. Wheels are THE problem on a bike. They're part of the fine tuning. You can have all the Campy hubs you want, but if the rims are not true, your goose is cooked. Done.

You only need an expensive truing stand if you work on lots of wheels. They make it more efficient. If youre handy you could construct one from wood or hardware store parts. I own a park TS2, but used a cheap one for many years, made a portable truing stand and also another truing stand just for my dads wheelchair wheels. I love working on wheels. Its my favorite aspect of bicycles.
