@@sweetstingers That's funny because the kids are eating them so fast they don't have time to get soft for the bees.

@@rodneymiddleton9624 I hear that. My kids eat alot of them before I started using them I couldn't keep them long enough to get soft either. I now pick up bananas at WalMart that they are going to toss out and use them. Walmart around me the manager knows me now and they give them to me they are already soft and have some bad spots in them but the bees don't care. Keep in the freezer and thaw when I need them. Enjoy the kiddos today Rodney

I have been feeding bannas to my bees for years and never had an issue. But they do get aggressive when they smell them. So in and out quickly. Love the video.

Hey Herbert thanks for stopping by. I find it interesting some experience aggressive behavior while others dont. I wonder if it has anything to do with the genetics I very rarely get a reaction from the bees when I places them on. Some colonies get stirred up but for the most part it's nothing out of the normal. Or could be my bees are just meanies and I don't notice it.

@@sweetstingers I have seen other beekeepers handle my bees and not wear any protection. But I dare not do that. They react differently with me. I have been chased before hardly has this ever happened. This past year, I have see reports of beekeepers all over the world saying how their bees were more aggressive than ever before. But looking forward to a new season. And where do you get 3 frame boxes? Are they homemade?
@sweetstingers
@sweetstingers 2 жыл бұрын
@@herbertjacobs8422 I heard from some saying the same things. Their bees seemed to be more aggressive. I've seen my fair share of aggressive bees here in Oklahoma. I prefer the nicer colonies. The 3 frame nucs I build them myself there is also a company called Poulis Apiary but I'm not sure if they build them any more. I have since switched to using a 10 frame box as a 4 way. It's easier I have them on hand. Trying to move away from so many different size boxes around.

Interesting with the banana. I'll have to try that. To SHB's like to get in there and infest them like pollen patties?
@sweetstingers
@sweetstingers 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but I find 2 bananas on strong colonies and 1 on smaller colonies they consume fast. Some colonies within an hour. I usually get around to them in a week and toss if they don't eat. 8f they have natural coming in they won't consume it very fast some won't consume at all just like patties. So far they have taken them. Been putting them on for about a month now. You can also mix them in pollen patties. Check out Katharina Davitts work she did research on the benefits. I go to Walmart and ask the manager if they are tossing bananas for free. Keep in freezers

Will i get more honey with deep super or medium and do i need excluder?
@sweetstingers
@sweetstingers 2 жыл бұрын
No you don't need an excluder. I use them because I run singles. You will get the same amout of honey, I your area produces a large amount of honey you will have more frames and boxes with mediums. Mediums are easier to lift they weigh less than a deep full of honey. But one over the other dosent produce more honey. I know a lot of beekeepers that use only mediums and some that use all shallows because of the weight of the deeps.

It has been well researched that bananas for bees is a bad idea. The ash content in bananas is too high and can cause to digestive tract issues in bees. Just because they eat it doesn't mean it is healthy for them
@sweetstingers
@sweetstingers 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely we don't just feed our bees anything. we researched it also and it has been documented they are beneficial also. We have given bananas to our hives for years If it harmed them then we wouldn't have any bees because all of our hives get them and I just don't see a negative letting them eat them. They produce more brood and helps them out in the summer dearths. I know others that feed them also and no ill effects. There are lab results and field results and field results show positive for us.

if they are eating the banana and not throwing it out the door, then there is something in there they need. I will have to try it thanks

I think they help and they supply minerals and vitamins. I have been giving bananas for a few years now we have given thousands over the years. There is research on the benefits search for Katharina Davitt she has research papers over it. They won't consume them if natural is coming in but in dearths and spring and fall when forage is minimal I give them to the colonies. 1 or 2 per hive per week for as long as they take them or weather turns cold. Can also mix them into pollen patty recipe if you use one. I also have a blog write up on my IG and FB pages going into more depth about them. Link to IG or FB page is in the description

Where did you get the idea for feeding bananas? Never saw this anywhere...in place of pollen? Why bananas?
@sweetstingers
@sweetstingers 2 жыл бұрын
Not in replace of pollen. I'm in Oklahoma we have pollen coming into out hives 12 months out of the year. It's for better nutrition. We have fed bananas to our hives for a few years now. We give them in the fall early spring and summer dearth. If there is natural forage coming in they won't consume them. Look up Katharina Davitt and bananas. She did a study over it for her PhD thesis or something like that I believe anyways she found their to be nutritional benefits to them for the colony. There is also links to them helping with chalkbrood to clear it up I know beekeepers in Australia that swear by it. Also south America has been using bananas forever to help their colonies out. UK and Australia has studies out over Bananas also. The bees love em as long as they have no real food if a flow or natural food coming in they won't touch them. 1 Banana for a small colony 2 for a big colony within 3 days they are gone some will eat them in under an hour if it's a big dearth. Sugar content in bananas is high and potassium is high which is lacking in bees nutrition

Good to know. I will try this next Feb and see what happens. 1/2 cup of sugar/ cup of pollen/ 1/2 cup of corn syrup/ essential oils/ Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 black bananas in Feb.
