when i went to a steam school for traction engines (steam tractors) the way they described the reverse was once you pull the reverse back you're using more of the expansion of steam rather than direct boiler pressure. Essentially a way to turn down the steam consumption while maintaining decent power, you need less throttle to maintain the same engine speed. I did run them for a day or 2 to get used to them and that indeed was the case, you pull the reverse back and the engine speed increases as you're using more of the steam itself rather than direct pressure

So much better then train simulator that gave up on making a good simulator and made it way over priced. For such little content. If they open it up like they want to with the workshop, we will be able to make evey time Era, standard gauge, and our own locomotives. These guys are on point with this concept and has the potential to be big. I do hope they add in a larger narrow gauge locomotive

not the pistons, it reduces the stroke of the slide valve, so it sends less volume of full-pressure steam goes through the cylinder and out the exhaust per stroke. it's kinda like variable cam timing (but not quite) on cars.

One of the upsides of the remote-switching app is apparently that you can also remote-control the locomotives, making it easier to solo-operate multiple power units controlled from the brake-van/caboose in the rear aside from refueling the fireboxes every few minutes... or running multiple shunting/switching/loading operations from the ground. Also, I think I noted earlier in the multi-porter run that running a Eureka and a porter in-tandem would also be lighter than *just* a Heisler (about 50% lighter, or half as much deadwieght as a class 70) but provide same-ish tractive-effort (actually about 1,000 pounds more). Therefore making such a tandem *slightly* superior in a hill-climb. Oh right... At the fork for between the sawmill, Iron-mine, and smelter... if you put a hump out there, you can have a slip-train of cordwood go down to the smelter with each trip to the iron-mine. The cordwood cars would then meet you done at the smelter while you bring the iron down from the mine. Assuming you can keep the cars from derailing (essentially a gravity-train/roller-coaster, with some slight curves to keep it from building too much speed... may need to make a test-track to see how fast a cordwood car loses speed due to rolling resistance, but I'm pretty sure you can get a constant 1% grade with a 10% curve angled slightly upwards to allow them to coast to a stop.) Similarly, if you can hump the coal-cars over the hills to the west (keep the hill to your left, eventually taking a NW leg until you round the summit... could probably even do it on a zero percent grade... up until the 10% drop on the other side) somehow, even one at a time, you can let them loose down towards the refinery/iron-works and collect them from there rather than the long-haul back and then find a beefy enough train to pull them from the bowl the smelter is in. *If you take the loco on that.. you may want a switchback so the train with it's airbrakes is in the back. And yes... American logging rails actually used to do this. *It's how roller coasters got invented.*

Devs, if you see this, please make one of those locomotives which take human power to move things! Being able to move a few empty carts with a lightweight locomotive which you can place at any time, which you can also use to move faster than by running (i.e. to catch up with a running train), would be very useful. It has to be lightweight and have high-enough torque to go uphill on a 4 degrees with a single person, while also not being too overpowered in terms of moving anything else around. Ideally, make it able to hold 4 people, to increase the torque and max speed, so 4 people could use it to catch up a train running on a 0 degrees rail after losing it's carts. Edit: I see you have the hand-car, at 40:20, but I don't know if ordering it will make it available right where you are, instead of at a certain place on the map. And you could still make a smaller bare-bones version which can only pull the gamers, and maybe an empty cart or two on a 0-degree rail, which cannot be bought but can be used by the gamers at any time they are on a track, and getting off the track would make it despawn.

@@Hyce777 Thank you! Ideally, it should be able to move a cart or two on flat ground, but have it's speed capped for both pulling (with a hitch) and pushing (with or without a hitch), so it can be used to connect carts as if you were pushing them by hand, but have it in the player's backpack so it doesn't litter the rails when the gamers are done using it and cause derailing because they forgot about it. You could even make something new, by having a bicycle with a metal rod connecting to a third wheel on the other rail, like inspired from an early catamaran (which was like a kayak with a side-floater and a sail).

Steam engines are most efficient with the regulator wide open and the reverser just above zero. Steam is admitted at the beginning of the stroke and quickly cut off again. The steam then expands in the cylinder. Ideally all of the pressure is used driving the piston and there's none left at the end of the stroke when the exhaust valve opens. In the opposite case, with the reverser fully forward and the regulator nearly closed, steam (at lower pressure) is admitted into the cylinder for the whole stroke. At the end of the stroke all of the pressure in the cylinder just blows out the exhaust.

Here is a little trick to not having steep track Start from the top and build down in a decline you're comfortable with The ground work will no doubt be very high at some sections but it will save you a lot of headaches Also the Heisler keeps snapping the links of a 21 car train at the iron mine very frequently when I try to align the cars with the docks, so I built a flat platform on the plateu so it doesn't go rolling down hill or down mountain Also you guys are such train nerds I love that you put this much effort into the game cause I like trains too tho I never got to actually analysing them on a functional level

When im playing something like train simulator running a steam engine it helps me to think about it like this. The regulator is the amount of pressure you are sending to the cylinders and the reverser is the volume of steam. The reverser is like turning a tap. You can have it all the way on and use lots of water (steam) or you can open it a crack and use a tiny amount of water (steam) while the regulator is like putting your thump over the end of a hose to make the water spray out with more pressure. Really all the reverser does is adjust the timing of the valve to control how long they are open and how long they are letting steam into the cylinder. Put the reverser on 1% and the regulator on 100% and its basically a full pressure super short puff of steam going into the cylinder. If you reverse that (reverser on 100 and reg on 1) it is a loooong but not very powerful blow of steam into the cylinder.

I have always had an interest in steam engines and steam locomotives in general. This was due to my dad’s and his step-dad’s love of steam locomotives. My dad’s first time diving a vehicle ANY vehicle was driving a steam tractor. The 1/8 scale steam model trains in Rohr Park in Chula Vista have always impressed me because they are so small and strong yet have the same mechanics as the full scale. Note: derailing a 1/8 scale engine is still a big problem.

When the reverser is closer to 0, it reduces the stroke length, which then makes it easier for the engine to climb slopes etc, like a lower gear on a car to climb a hill

26:00 the steepest standard gauge I know of for the USA is about 2.4% The "Sand Patch Grade" (run by CSX) is the steepest I believe at 2.4% and the "Cajon Pass" with a max of about 2.2% (run by BNSF) and both of those are steep

The regulator controls pressure and rate of flow into the cylinder. The Reverser controls the amount of time the inlet valve is open, allowing more or less steam into the cylinder each stroke.

Local grade a 5 minute walk from me on the CNR Dundas sub @Hardy Rd is about 1.6% and does challenge trains regularly. To the East at Copetown same line in spots it approaches 1.8% and poses similar daily challenges. Neat hearing engines full bore with everything they have going westbound

For England and our EMU’S and DMU’S - Electric Multiple Units and Diesel Multiple Units - we have TOPS so you have - for example - the class 101 and 102 are heritage DMUs which were withdrawn in the early 2000’s and were put in service in the 1960’s. However 52002 would be D453 for example - not really that number, just an example.
