Ya Guessed it, both recordings!! Fred first and then Ginger's recording second (please note the original orchestration after Fred finishes singing is not included)
As you can see Fred's is off the soundtrack, Ginger's recording can be found on 'Screen Goddesses'
Ginger recorded 'Cheek to Cheek' and the other numbers from Top Hat (not inc the title song) for Decca in 1935, she included in the 'deal' that if she didn't like them then they should be destroyed, however she forgot to include that the recordings should be returned to her to destroy personally and when she didn't like the recordings and told Decca so they shipped them to England and released them under another label. much as this annoyed Ginger it does mean that we can still listen to her recordings today :)

My grandpa used to sing this all the time. Go easy on me, never knew it was fred astaire. I've recently started watching all Fred's stuff, and this just gave me so many memories of my gramps when I saw this. What a wonderful era for film and music. So much better than today's.

@@frankmartinez3020 Ginger did the same steps sometimes going backwards in High Heels. She was simply stunning. Of course Fred was the greatest but I wonder how he could dance in tight dresses and High Heels. I couldn't take my eyes off Ginger when watching these movies with my parents when I was a young child. I would even sneak out of bed and watch peeking in the Den on School Nights. I heard my mom singing the tune while cooking a meal long, long time ago. Then, that beautiful melody got into my head, and I started humming it walking to school. Years later, I saw the movie being show on a black & white t.v. Hence, I didn’t only hum. I danced like him…😊

That's wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it. My parents were 40 years older than me. My mom passed in 2020. I loved hearing her stories of her youth in the 1930s and during WWII. Your comment made me think of a time when my mom was doing dishes and I was at the kitchen table we were listening to big band and In the Mood came on and she kinda danced a little and the smile on her face and the memories flashing through her mind are in my heart forever.

Fred apparently hated it because the feathers shed while she danced and got all over him and everywhere--imagine having to dance and sing while breathing in bits of tickly feathers! But his nickname for her was "Feathers," so he must have seen the funny side of it.

Utterly sublime. Ginger is so perfect, the way she finishes moves, bobs her shoulders so perfectly mirror Fred or just dot the 'i's and cross the 't's of his movement. A perfect combo. I remember reading that Irving Berlin thought Fred was the best singer of his songs. Perfectly understandable since, whilst his voice might not be perfect, his timing when singing is as immaculate as when dancing, so he really gives meaning to even the most trivial lyric he sings.

@Rob...Fred, along with Dooley Wilson, Walter Huston, Jimmy Durante, Martha Raye, Stubby Kaye, even The Merm, weren't so much singers as they were stylists. As stylist doesn't appear on the pop list. No, they were of a different style. Take Walter Huston's "September song," a perfect counterweight to Dooley Wilson's ''As time goes by," both memorable stylists. Rob, I'd like to say more, but I hope you see at least part of what i'm trying to say as to singer v stylists.

Fred's simply one of the very very best dancers in his time. He makes dancing so effortless and light. It's almost like he's floating in air when he moves. I would hesitate to use the term "elegant" on a man, but he is. Stylish, cool, and just immaculately poised. As for Ginger, she's just equally gorgeous.

They brought smiles to people in the darkness of the Great Depression with the beauty and elegance of their dancing and beautiful outfits and scenery. Fred was a good actor which gets forgotten because of his amazing dancing. He was funny, never took himself seriously like looking in the mirror and quickly turning away so he didn't have to see himself - the butler, so droll and Edward Everett Horton all made a splendid cast of drama, silliness and humor and love aka "happily ever after" :)

Heaven... I'm in heaven, And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak. And I seem to find the happiness I seek, When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek. Heaven... I'm in heaven, And the cares that hung around me through the week, Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak, When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek. Oh, I love to climb a mountain, And to reach the highest peak. But it doesn't thrill me half as much As dancing cheek to cheek. Oh, I love to go out fishing In a river or a creek. But I don't enjoy it half as much As dancing cheek to cheek. Dance with me! I want my arms about you. The charms about you Will carry me through to... Heaven... Man I wish I was alive when music like this was available not all the shit we have now. Just watching old black and white movies with my grandfather and seeing their houses and how they dress and hold themselves, all the stories that my grandfather used to tell make me wish I was around.

I have some old LPs of Fred singing--mainly songs from his films with Ginger. I think one is The Fred Astaire Song Book." They aren't the movie soundtracks but recorded in a studio. (Fred sings Ginger's songs, too.) Very good sound. I bet if you search online you'll find something still available. Not sure how expensive, of course!

Damodar Poudel the comment at the very top quotes the line from the movie ‘The Green Mile,’ spoken while this clip is playing...but I don’t think the people who commented knew from whence that line came! I remember seeing this as a girl, thinking all Black & White movies occurred in the 60’s! 😂 Then I saw it also, in The Green Mile! Not sure which picture I saw more...this one or the other! Oh! And also...the same line is quoted below THIS comment! A lot of fans coming here after seeing ‘The Green Mile!’ 😃

Not enough love for Ginger in these comments. She did everything Fred Estaire did, but did so in heels, backwards and bleeding from her feet. I urge you to look into this woman, she's an inspiration.

I agree, Robyn, that it is worthwhile to appreciate them both. I've enjoyed Fred and Ginger in the 10 movies that they did together, plus many other films done independently of each other! I certainly do not get the impression of any "hate filled garbage" in your comment at all ✌️

Ginger had issues, to say the least. Its why men never stuck around in her life for very long. In later interviews she grew prickly because people referred to the films as "Astaire-Rogers pictures" as opposed to "Rogers-Astaire pictures." Truth is, she never collaborated with Fred or Hermes Pan when they both would try and choreograph the dances. All she really cared about was what dress she wore and learning the steps. Its rather incredible that she believed HER name should come first.

katandbabyI can imagine it was probably shedding a lot. It definitely looked good, at least on film. It doesn't seem like her legs are moving at all, kind of "ethereal" . She seems so elegant and reserved too, just her expressions. Not to downplay Fred Astaire, of course, amazing showman.

Amazing to think that our culture actually had its peak 77 years ago when the public preferred this more artistic portrayal of what it means to fall in love.. An expression of movement and music so much more intricate than anything represented in popular culture today. Heres hoping our society can once again reach such eloquence of expression through movement within our lifetimes.
