There was a girl from my highschool that fell from the top of the pyramid and broke her neck because her spotter was jealous because “she stole her boyfriend” She lived but lost nearly all of her memory and her recovery was about 2 years. When she returned she went to see the boyfriend and she didn’t remember that he broke it off while in the hospital, and was dating the jealous girl. She’s doing incredible now, she’s in fashion and merchandising, and Mrs jealousy is now in jail.

If anyone is to be blamed, it's the coaches and sports trainers of the school for not properly spotting the stunt. She broke her neck! She's lucky to be alive!!

My granddaughter was a flyer and was dropped one time. The girls at the bottom did a good job breaking her fall but she still hit the gym floor with a thud so loud that the whole gym went silent. Thankfully she just suffered some bruising.

As a Former Fire Chief and Paramedic I had a difficult situation with a scene call. I had a mid 20's patient who's throat was swelling and closing fast. I have done surgical cricothyrotomy before, but the local Jurisdiction didn't have it in there protocols, so I called Medical Control and was advised to do what is necessary, but it will be highly reviewed at the patient is under care of another provider! Since I had no medical supplies that directly involved a surgical cricothyrotomy, I had to improvise. That patient survived and now has a large family of there own and started a company of there own! It was very rewarding to know I made a positive difference!

as a former cheerleader, whenever a flyer is in the air, not only should the bases be cautious, but there should be other cheerleaders on the sides to catch the flyer if someone falls.

I love how intubation is somehow considered not something a paramedic can do even though it very much is in their scope of practice

As a cheerleader we would've never let something like this happen. Especially with all the girls that could've helped that were in the scene at the time too? We were taught that even if it meant us being injured we would catch the flyer if they were falling.

I’m a quadriplegic, so this story definitely hit home since I broke my neck snowboarding 9 years ago.

As someone who broke his neck once, this really got to my heart.

First thing you learn when working in a health centre: you NEVER make those kind of snarky comments to another doctor or nurse in front of a patient. Next thing you know, the patient thinks the doctor’s wrong or don’t know what they’re doing and files an unnecessary complaint which could mean lots of trouble. Edit: I’ve always wanted to do this, this is the most likes I’ve gotten ever and now I get why people get so excited about it😄

I thought a broken neck meant instant death. The fact you can survive is astounding to hear.

Spinal injuries are unpredictable. I was told that when my grandfather was a teenager, he fell off the roof of the cafeteria at his high school and landed on his back but he recovered fully from it. It actually surprised me.

I guess when she realized how much it's gonna cost her to care for a paralyzed child, she decided it was time to sue.

It's okay for the mother to be angry, but she has to understand her daughter is extremely lucky she didn't kill herself on impact!! Having a neck injury like that paralysis was obvious!! (I don't even know if being paraplegic is possible with that amount of trauma, I'm an EMT not a neurologist)

The performance of the grief-stricken mother seems excellent. As the doctor said, when tragedies happen, it's natural to assign blame; and the emergency department staff were the last to handle her child. When anything terrible happens, our minds love to explore the "What ifs" When feeling out of control and helpless, the mother's "What ifs" fall on those tasked with the present situation at hand, especially with no medical knowledge to understand the intricacies and limitations of emergency medicine. This reaction was written quite realistically.

This reminds me of my childhood friend Megan… she flew off a 4 wheeler in her teens and went head first into a railroad tie. She barely survived she was life flighted. She passed away in 2022 she literally went into cardiac arrest due to issues from that accident with the 4 wheeler. She was a childhood friend but I can still remember everything we did together she was so funny and the best friend a girl could have. RIP Megan!

Hard to believe how one accident can leave someone with a lifetime of hardship. 😢

Ah yes. Smart move mom. Allow your child to participate in an EXTREMELY dangerous activity, and then blame the hospital when your child breaks her neck and paralyzes herself.

I was a cheerleader from 4th grade until college. This was in the 70’s and early 80’s. If we got hurt we would wrap it, tape it or bandage it and go back to cheering. We didn’t think anything about it. I’m glad that it is much safer now and that it is viewed as a sport instead of a activity

That delivery of the "Looks like you might be a little chilly, are you chilly? You know what, I'm gonna get you a blanket" line felt so normal, like in hospitals in real life. The next time I hear someone say something in that way in the hospital, I'm going to be paranoid she's actually trying to stay calm in the face of an emergency!

she is VERY lucky to be alive. an injury of that nature, to the depths it is, does not have a high survival rate, let alone a high rate where survivors become fully mobile again. although not impossible, it’s highly unlikely and blaming a doctor for a freak accident that happened in a sport, isn’t morally ok. now if there was medical misconduct, yes. but there wasn’t. having a stage of denial doesn’t warrant you into creating problems out of thin air just because you can’t deal with the reality of the situation.

I was a flyer a long time ago. I had an accident that left me with 3 surgeries and back injuries for life. That was 30 years ago. When I see what these girls do, now, I get anxiety. The sport has become too dangerous. Dial it back. These are young girls

I think if in the moment she told the mom "we have two options, we leave her how she is and transport her and she probably dies because she doesn't get oxygen, OR we move her neck so we can intubate but it might cause paralysis. Pick your poison". Mom can't be mad if it was her own call knowing the risks.

No doctor gives good news first and reassures you. My experience is that they always tell you the bad news

It's ultimately the parent's fault for allowing their child to participate in such a dangerous activity. In 2002 alone, cheerleading lead to 16,000 ER visits. In another year, 567 injuries occurred... 83% of those occurred during practice. It is considered the most Dangerous Sport for Girls in the United States.

As an EMT I hate when hospital staff or any other medical provider states things they shouldn’t in front of the pt’s family. It opens us all up for questions and lawsuits

My mom wrecked her car six years ago a few days before Christmas. She was taking me to my friends house so i could spend the night over there. She dropped me off, and on her way home she took the worse route than the one we took to get there and she was not familiar with the road. It was very snowy and black ice was everywhere, there is an invisible turn. It looks like a strait shoot but it takes a downhill left turn and there is no guardrail, she flipped her car four times in the field beside the turn. She is absurdly lucky that someone was behind her and they Immediately called ems. I got a call around 9:00 PM that she was on her way to the hospital and my dad came and picked me up, she was in surgery for hours and hours. When I finally got to see her she looked like a ghost, her head was cracked all the way across has a lot of staples, and she looked horrible. A few days later she woke up, and she was told by the doctors that she broke her c1 c2 and c4 vertebrae along with a broken rib, severe nerve damage and multiple other broken bones. She was told she would never walk again. She spent the next 8 months in the hospital and after a lot of rehab she finally got to go home. It started out with therapy eventually she stopped seeing the therapists, and I then started working with her to help circulate blood and try and build up lost muscle in her limbs from not being able to move. Today she can walk, even got her drivers license renewed. On her 52 birthday in November, she was even driving my dads UTV on a gravel trail and on the main road (it’s street legal). All that after the doctor said she wouldn’t walk again. Now she’s not completely normal, her neck is fused downwards and has very limited movement with her fingers and her left leg. But she can walk, drive, write, she still cleans with the help of her aids that come in daily. I always kept her motivated when she was recovering, you never know what’s going to happen and it was truly a miracle

A guy I grew up with was on a swim team and dove and hit his head on the bottom of the pool and was paralyzed for life. Humans weren't built for extremes. We never learn.

Even though this is a show it still shows how fast and how easy your whole life can be changed

It's weird she didn't try to block her fall. Usually it's instinctive to put your arms up to protect your head.

I'm the captain of my college cheer squad, one of my girls actually passed away after falling off out famous really tall pyramid last year. Her death hit me hard because she and I got along so well, her name was Lily, and she was one of my star girls

I have seen people get limited movement back in some body parts YEARS after this type of thing. While it’s not always the case, it’s best to not give up. There is a chance and it’s worth taking. Lots of hard therapy later you never know how you will be.

Medical professionals are always the scapegoat. One of the most thankless professions in the world and responsibilities for injuries are very rarely blamed on the reason, the person or whomever, whatever caused the injury

I had a patient in the hospital suffer from an internal decapitation. She was in her teens I believe and broke her neck from a car accident. Anytime we had to suction her or move her she would start to crash. This was about 12 years ago when I was an RT (respiratory therapist) student going through clinicals. I was also a medic for about 10 years at the time. This is a devastating injury to have. Probably the worst there is!

The same thing happened to a girl at my school when I was in high school. They accidentally dropped her and she hit the gym floor. She landed on her head. First few days they weren't sure if she was going to live. That's how bad her injuries were. In the end she did survive but she ended up being a quadriplegic for the rest of her life. She also had a traumatic brain injury. It was incredibly terrifying and heartbreaking. She never returned to school. She was only 17. 😢 Most people really have no idea how dangerous cheerleading actually is. One wrong move, one wrong hand slip and that's all it takes to do horrific damage. That doesn't even touch on the other extremely common injuries. Like sprains, strains , broken bones , pulled muscles and back injuries that are considered "minor" injuries.

Christopher Reeve had the same injury, his skill separated from the spine; however, the actual spinal column was bruised, but remained intact. Look at what happened to him. Some blamed the lay person who did CPR on him. The tentative thing that was done was the airway. They had to move her head to maintain an airway. Unfortunate but it happens. Cheerleading and gymnastics have a high rate of serious injury because no one who teaches it is properly trained.

She literally moved forward. The other girl already knew she was gonna fall as soon as she moved her footing out of her grasp. If the mom had been watching her daughter instead of the game, she'd know what happened. But nooo, she wants to blame the people who helped keep her alive.

I'm 90% certain that this was actually correct, minus the wasting time calling someone...ABCs take precedence over everything else, and Airway is *literally* the most important

I was in middle school when one of our flyers fell and shattered her knee cap. It was super traumatizing. I can’t watch stunts without holding my breath now. Watching Netflix’s Cheer had me constantly screaming “catch your flyers!”

In my school, we had where the guardians had to have proof of medical insurance for being a cheerleader. It’s a lot more dangerous than it sometimes looks especially for the “flyers.”

This does happen to cheerleaders. I’ve seen interviews with girls who are paralyzed because of cheerleading accidents. It’s because of this that my girlfriend and I both agreed that if we ever have a daughter, we will never let her be a cheerleader.

Neck-down paralysis is the WORST! Imagine NOT being able to floss your teeth when something is stuck in them and it's PAINFUL, or scratch your face when it feels itchy (among other COMPLEX things)!😢

The way there were no cheerleaders on the sides, keeping an eye on the Flyers is super concerning to me. There should be many watching just in case and the ones on the ground should be positioned in a way where catching their flyer is almost instant. NEVER LET YOUR FLYER FALL!!

In real life the concerned parent would be picking up and shaking the child all about, worsening the damage. Uncontrollable parents panic (excused as love) is so dangerous.

I know someone this happened to exactly like this. It was at a local college my friend went to. I met this girl and she was stunningly beautiful and really popular (and the head cheerleader) and one day she fell from some pyramid or something. I ran into her a couple weeks later at the dorm and she was more or less okay, but could never do anything athletic again. She was such a sweet girl and talked to me about my friend while I waited for her. Really sad for her because it's rare someone that popular and nice was such a genuinely good person.

Something like this happened at my work. I worked at a convention center and we had a lot of cheerleading and dance competitions and during a cheer competition a girl fell from the top of the pyramid. She broke her ribs, punctured her lung and died a couple days later. We were right across the street from a hospital so there was no delay in care and we always had EMTS on site during events.

She lost her daughter basically, so it's natural she tries to get something out of it. Now this kind of behavior is what makes lots of health care professionals reluctant to help cuz they know if they do, they'll be entangled in big lawsuits, so letting the patient go sometimes is easier. I work with lots of scared doctors and nurses it's unfortunate.

I’m a front-spot and this is a perfect example of why there should always be a front-spot or two to catch the flyer, I could tell the bases didn’t have a good grip on the foot

Looking to blame the hospital when they were up front about how severe a neck insure like that was. Lady...her skull was LITERALLY detached from her spine!!

i saw a documentary on internal decapitation before. The survival rate is extremely low. The recovery rate is even lower. The doc was about a teen who had this injury and fully recovered from it. He had to relearn how to move his whole body and do basic tasks again, but he fully recovered and can live a normal life. The doctor in the documentary said that he had only heard of 2 cases in which the person wasn't completely paralyzed from the neck down and that case was one of them.

26 years as a Paramedic and this is the first time I have ever seen RSI used for nasal intubation.

as a parent of a child who did competitive cheer for years i don't think any parent would let their child do cheer if they knew the dangers. cheer is like football without pads or rather with the pads on the ground. these girls are being thrown over 15 feet in the air and are counting on 3 other girls catching her.

I was dropped in a cheer stunt when I was 12 years old and hit my back and head. I couldn't see or breath for a minute. I crawled to the bleachers and they didn't even stop the game. I was lucky there were no injuries except a bruised spinal cord. And bruised shoulder.

When I was in high school PE class, we were doing hand stands with "spotters." I got up in the air, but when I fell, the spotters just stood by and let me crash down on my knee. The pain was excruciating, but luckily nothing was broken. Sometimes I wonder if the spotters deliberately failed to catch me, hoping that I would be severely injured. Yeah, wretched animals like that were in that class.

As a cheerleader myself, it got to be because no one should have fell from a stunt especually not from extintion. Glad shes ok. The reason why she fell was wither because the bases didnt have her foot correctly or she wasnt squezzing from being on one leg. Praying for her tho

As a cheerleading coach, this is actually very common every now and then. The flyers and tops know this is a risk that could happen and is why parents sign a form to release coach's of liability. Falls, scrapes, dislocations all common. The bottom spotters with back up spotters are there for this reason however, When spotting even when a flyer team work and placement is everything. Without that you get what just happened. The one that fell not paying attention to where she has her foot so not in reach of the under flyer. The bottom spotters not firmly gripping and the displacements. Leading to the nasty accident. So blame on this is on not only the coach but the piramid team for not properly working together and watching placements.

Back in 2019 I broke my neck and I can say it sucks. Even now 2023, it still sucks.

This is why I’m scared to continue my journey in cheerleading because I’ve fallen and broken my leg once while falling from a stunt and who know what could happen next
