I'm the one who wrote the guide on getting bootcamp to work on the mac rumors form, I actually have a variation of this, where I run a windows gaming pc and then stream the full 5k wireless (by using a dummy plug and CRU) to my mac then use moonlight to run my mac and my windows side by side, while retaining the gesture support of my magic trackpad, works pretty well so far. I suppose this solution wouldn't work when you want to use double windows monitors though. hm

I've been using a very similar setup for the past two years. It's a great & mostly seamless setup for multi-OS users. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with commitment issues 😅 The main differences are: 1. I use conventional PC displays (One ultra wide, one 16:9). I do not experience any issues when switching between PC & MacBook, however the ultra wide display will occasionally disconnect & reconnect in the span of 1 second. This happens about once per day. The only inconvenience it causes is interrupting screen sharing sessions at work. 2. I use a Logitech MX wireless keyboard & mouse. They support up to 3 Bluetooth targets so this saves me from needing an extra KVM for inputs 3. I use a Kingston Thunderbolt hub for the MacBook instead of plugging cables into it directly

The major problem with connecting a Mac to a display switcher is that if the mac isn't actively on a screen it goes to sleep. Which ruins anything like a plex server that might be running on it. I fiddled with it for so long but there's just no way thanks to mac os it requires an active hdmi to be connected in order to not go to sleep when it's closed even if plugged in. There is no setting to disable this. So be aware.

The solution I plan on implementing soon (so this hasn’t been tested) is to have the Mac control everything, but on the Mac have Windows’ native Remote Desktop app to remote control my windows machine. Then have a DAS or NAS act as the main storage for both machines. That way there’s no funky cable and drivers haggling. If both of the computers are connected to a little network switch under the desk, the latency should be minimal. And that way when you leave with your MacBook, you still have access to your full work flow.

yeah it's pretty much always the cable's fault with display issues. it's a problem for both DisplayPort and HDMI at this point. The high bandwidth needs of top tier displays are not being validated for. very very annoying. I don't think I would ever do my setup like this (I clicked on the video because I do use both a mac mini and windows desktop) But I do think the studio display offers and interesting package. If apple did put in the effort to officially maintain a real (even very basic) windows compatibility that fixes the ridiculous need to power cycle them nobody would argue the capabilities of the setup. (if the bug is caused by the KVM though it's on you 😅)

Correct me if I'm wrong; but wouldn't it be easier (somewhat cheaper) if you just used a Mac Studio / Mac Mini with a M1 / M2 chip and run MacOS with Parallels and then setup two (2) desktops (Windows - 1 monitor desktop / MacOS - 1 monitor desktop). Then you can just use 1 keyboard and 1 mouse and not have any need for a KVM switch and other dongles. Um, because that's what I have been doing since for the last 5 years on my two (2) Mac 27" LED monitors (yes, I did by two thunderbolt to old thunderbolt dongles). Just saying. Happy Tech-ing.

the production value of this video is amazing, but this is a seemingly roundabout way of solving a very simple problem. This video is not sharing any good tech advice. My solution to this scenario: 1) Most PC's also have thunderbolt via USB-C. Use a standard usb-c to usb-c cable instead of the jangly cable. Even if you use the jangly cable - this isn't the end of the world. You've got two computers on two screens. 2) Use a software-based KVM like Synergy by Symless. Use the one keyboard and mouse to control both computers including copying/pasting as well as drag/drop between them. 3) Use a common NAS between all the computers. done.

@@krunge True, but honestly the difference in PPI isn't enough to offset the cheaper price (2 thirds), more features (KVM...) and the much better HDR colors and OLED contrast. Oh not to mention the 240hz that makes everything feel snappy. Did I miss it in the video but did you ever explain why you chose to use the apple studio displays in the first place? I don't understand it's value proposition at all especially if you were coming from perfect colors on OLED, there are lots of WOLED and QDOLED screens coming out this year that would work better than the massive 48" you had before too
@CheeseTurbulence
@CheeseTurbulence 3 ай бұрын
Originally, the "start" of the journey was caused by me having issues with text and detail clarity on the LG. I did look into the new OLED models, but none seemed to be just right. The newer ultra-wide WOLED/QDOLEDs were really nice, but I was afraid that it might still cause issues. In the end, there were a couple of reasons, first it was the resolution, there's almost nothing with 5k (the non Apple versions don't look that great...). I really wanted to get that crispness, so the Studio Display seemed like the perfect fit. Then there were certain software benefits with using an Apple Display on an Apple computer, e.g. True Tone. It's terrible for color critical work, but during normal office hours I really like to have it on along with automatic brightness, all in the name of my eyes. Lastly, and this is a bit ridiculous for a reason, but it was novelty. I always liked the idea of having Apple displays, and this approach seemed like something that could end up being a rather cool setup for the sake of it. I have to say though that, compared to OLED, you can certainly tell that the contrast isn't as good. But I "trust" it more than I did my LG when it comes to color grading. I know this is calibrated to do just that, and you could just calibrate other screens, but it "feels" safer. I don't think my reasons are 100% balanced though, there is definitely a bit of Apple curiosity in there 😉

@TrendyWhistle
@TrendyWhistle 3 ай бұрын
@@CheeseTurbulence ahh i see, yeah the apple displays truly physically look really nice, i have to admit, and nothing out there really has true tone or even proper auto brightness.. I wish more manufacturers actually gave a shit to make the actual display itself look better. All the OLED screens so far look like they're showing off the glass panel thin look with the heat sink and controller box attached to the bottom, personally i'd much rather they just make a uniform cube with better cooling with that extra space (since heat is the main cause of burn in and all the brightness limitations in the first place)
@TrendyWhistle
@TrendyWhistle 3 ай бұрын
@@CheeseTurbulence oh also, as a colorist i have found that premiere and other NLE's act REALLY weird when using a software calibration profile, (the eyedroppers stop working properly and the export vs preview window differences get worse) so I actually use an iphone, ipad or macbook screen as my final reference screen after using scopes - so i totally get what you mean by trusting the mac screen more (even if it's inaccurate, most people are looking at the content via iphone screens anyway, and they're calibrated similarly.)

I wish there was a way to use both mac OS and windows OS on a single Operating system using one monitor. By that, I mean if I'm running mac OS, I can quickly switch to windows OS by going to mission control. You can do this already with Parallels for mac but that's virtualization. I don't want to virtualize windows OS on a mac computer, I want to run windows natively from a separate dedicated PC that's more powerful. Before Apple transitioned to silicon chips, you could probably have ran windows OS as a primarily computer and virtualized mac OS using a virtual machine and switch between the operating systems with ease without too much performance loss (since unlike Apple hardware, you can get more powerful PCs for lesser cost). But now that mac OS use ARM architecture now, that's no longer possible. Why do I want to run two Operating systems on a single monitor? I'm not too sure why, but I just find dual monitor setups overwhelming and distracting.

The side flipping seems more like a macOS bug. I don't have these displays but I also have a dual display setup. You can quickly go to settings and flip the status bar over from one display to the other. The black screen issue I personally do not have, however I know for the fact that windows does put the displays into some state where it disables HDCP so that macOS stops playing videos on some streaming services. It could be a somewhat similar issue here as well. Worth comparing HDCP settings in that regard.

I did something similar but I find far more useful. 3x 27” displays connected to Apple Studio. Then I have 4 other PCs on my network also. All my Windows boxes are running Windows Pro so I can connect to any of them using Remote Desktop on the Mac. This lets me easily flip beteween any of my machines super easy at any time. Throw in Parallels to run Linux and at any one time I can be able to flip any of my monitors to any one five different pcs and any number of VMs. And it all runs super smoothly and i only need one keyboard and mouse. To do some gaming, which is generally not feasible over Remote Desktop, i have my main Windows machine connected to an alternate input on my middle monitor and i can easily switch to that when i need to. I added a usb switch for my keyboard so i can swap to tha computer when i need to game and my mouse can switch to multiple wireless connections. It might not be a simple click of a button to switch, but im generally either working using RDC or im gaming so its not a big deal. To top it off i have a sound mixer so i pipe the sound from my mac and my main pc into my speakers and can have sound from both at the same time. Great if im playing a movie on one of the side monitors while gaming on the middle. Once i had it all setup i was surprised at how seemless it all is. I have some macro keys to flip through all my full screen apps which makes it super easy to change what im seeing. I can configure RDC to use all my screens for a single connection, but i can still flip each monitor to a different view at any time. I typically have something streaming on the left, a view of my main work pc in the midlle, and on the right i’ll cycle between my Mac to see Messages / mail / etc or a second screen of my main pc, or occasionally a view of a linux vm. And it all just works.

@@CheeseTurbulence I've managed to connect other devices (My Samsung device for example) with a straight USB-C cable and it worked. For the times it didn't work, I unplugged the display and plugged it back in, and then it worked. (WHY Apple could you not give us a power-switch?)

This was more than fun, I was seriously glued to my single, 38 inch, LG 38GN950P-B ultragear ultrawide monitor... A little mockery never hurt xD But yes, this was absolutely fun to watch and really interesting too. It sort of is what I'd describe as pioneering in our big tech world. Trying to find a solution for a superficial problem, we created by ourselves. But it can lead to maginificent ideas and solutions in the end, just like this experiment did.

I have the same jangly cable but I was just wondering whether you’ve run into issues with windows PC occasionally flickering and turning into a black screen until you do a hard restart where I either need to unplug the cable or turnoff and on the studio display for it to show the screen again. It can happen 20 mins into use or randomly an hour or more. Does this happen to you? I’m on the 2nd cable replacement
@CheeseTurbulence

@@CheeseTurbulence Crap lol. So I basically plug the jangly cable display port into my graphics card and the USB one into one of the nearby USB ports at the back. I bought my cable awhile back so Im not really sure I can ask for a replacement now but yeah first cable i got, it worked but was more sensitive to getting black screen flickers and second one was much rarer with flickers with the black screen but more stable. It’s only when I either unplug the cable and plug it back in or power off and on the studio display (either work) that it’d show up again but at full brightness obviously. Def keep a lookout on yours. A miracle you went 8 straight hours without a single flicker.

(I’ve had multiple cables and just want to make sure the resolution doesn’t drop , cause some cables are limited) . Btw you could use Barrier which is an open source/free software that allow you to control many computer inputs from one computer.. that way you don’t need to use the switch unless Barrier stopped working It adds a little bit of delay, but if you install it on windows for the games, you won’t really feel the delay on Mac
