I feel like you need to do one of these episodes, but you put James and Jamie in the hotseat, and randomly select some of the items from Barry's home kitchen. They have to guess not just what the item costs, but whether or not Barry actually owns that product.

It's not just the hand pollination on one day that makes vanilla so expensive! It takes 2-3 years for a plant to become established before it will flower. It then takes a year for the vanilla pod to develop (assuming it was successfully pollinated). It then has to dry for up to a year. It's a long process from start to finish!!

Being Vietnamese, I've always found it interesting that snails are often seen as this higher end ingredient within Western culture because they're very commonly enjoyed in our cuisine. Sea snails can be found as street food in Vietnam everywhere and they're often meant to be a social snack with people gathering with drinks and picking at large portions of sea snails. They're also used in various soups and broths, like in bún ốc, which is a noodle soup, and like the snail porridge mentioned, we have our own version of congee with sea snails too, called cháo ốc, if anyone was curious.
@walksthroughlife900

Did this get introduced to Vietnamese cuisine via the French?
@animeviolinist001
@animeviolinist001 3 жыл бұрын
@@walksthroughlife900 Actually, no. According to author Vu Hong Lien and archaeological finds, piles of discarded snail shells were discovered in Nghệ An province of northern Vietnam that date back to over 10,000 years. In France, snail shells have been found in archaeological excavations, showing snails were eaten back in prehistoric times. Some archaeological sites around the Mediterranean have had physical evidence of culinary use of snails too. So really, people thousands of years from two opposite sides of a massive land mass took a look at some snails and thought, "Hey. Maybe we could eat that," and we haven't stopped ever since, which I think is beautiful. Food still manages to connect us, even without our knowing. ☺

@@alayakow1037 Oh, absolutely, which is why it intrigues me more. I'm actually Vietnamese-American, but I used to live in France too. Snails were regular fare there, but in some other Western countries, like the United States, it gets elevated to a higher level and is seen of as something unique and special, when, really, it's likely because it's uncommon to us and also the association that Americans have with anything French being fancy and high-class. It really makes you reconsider what the concept of "high-class" even entails since it can vary so much from culture to culture.

Suggestion: Heilala Vanilla Powder! (I use their products here in New Zealand all the time!) From their website: "Heilala Vanilla’s origins began in 2002 as an aid project founded by fellow New Zealander, John Ross, and his family. The Kingdom of Tonga had been ravaged by Cyclone Waka, leaving the Islands and its people shattered in the wake of an exceptionally vicious natural disaster. Partnering with a local family in the village of Utungake, together they established a small vanilla plantation that robustly grew into the world renowned humanitarian vanilla brand, Heilala Vanilla."

You know what would be great? A pass it on with recent pretentious ingredients. The twist? The guys are assigned a pretentious ingredient by someone from the crew and they only discover it at the beginning of their turn. The order? Crew's choice, what would be the most entertaining for them! We need to have the crew back involved since you have an amazing crew behind the scene!

VIdeo Idea: The Normals teach normals how to cook. Each of the SortedFood normals are partnered up with someone who has limited to no cooking experience or ability and must teach them how to make a reasonably complex recipe. The Normals get the full recipe in advance and must come up with a 'lesson plan' that is suitable for someone with no experience and then must walk the normal through it live without being able to directly help with the cooking itself. Could easily make a suitable badge to be rewarded for the one who is the best teacher.

Ooooh, the moment they said Tahitian vanilla, I knew they were in for a treat. When I was little, my family took a trip to Hawaii, and after a dinner one night at a restaurant, I got vanilla ice cream for dessert. My family teased me for going for plain vanilla instead of chocolate, but then they tried my ice cream - it was Tahitian vanilla ice cream. It totally changed all their minds about vanilla being “boring,” apparently. I remember they kept trying to find a place to buy some for the rest of the trip, and even for months after we returned home XD

When I saw the mustard my eyes opened widely. And when you said Pommery, I smilled. I grew up in Meaux, and to be honest, it's my German's teacher (who's German) that made me discorver it. So not quite popular, even in the city it's made in. Since I moved to another city, I buy it in bulk when I go see my mother. They have a lot of different variety (cramberries, vinegar, honey...), and it's my favourite mustard. And it's completly pretentious ! I mean, it's french :)
