This album not getting a 10 is a pretty spicy meme.

The first time I heard it, I thought it was very abrasive. I liked it but I didn't want to hear it again right away. 9 months later I suddenly had an urge to hear it again. I don't know why, I just had to give it another chance. This time around it really made an impression on me. I understood it. It spoke to me. It's almost like it knew I would be back and it waited for me. I now absolutely love Abyss. Maybe there was a few experiences I had to endure to finally appreciate what Chelsea had to say in this album. I guess I just wasn't ready for it back then.

Not even moonlight XD Can't wait to listen to this record! I need me something dark and unforgiving :-P

This is easily one of my favorite albums of the year. Also one of the darkest albums I've heard in a while.

First listen - this is great Second listen - why didn't I hear how good this really is Every listen since - this is so much better than i remembered from last time

Your articulate descriptions of albums, at times, feels as satisfying and musical as an actual piece of music, this is good.

I think Maw was my favorite track from this. The sweet and murky sounds in her voice just kind of stood out over the intense gloom everywhere. Was a great contrast to the songs before it. Fantastic review fantano!

did you check out sandrider's album godhead? it came out in 2013 so its nothing recent. i like that album even though the songs can feel a bit samey, but they all seem to have some high point in them that makes me like them, especially the chorus in the godhead song.

I've been listening this constantly over and over again while riding the bus. the more I listen to each of her tracks the more it grows on me, the first track I found was "we hit a wall" on a random on sound cloud suggestion.

One of my favorite albums of the year by far. I just absolutely love how the music is dark enough to wallow in, yet the lyrics are not so drenched in depression as to not be enjoyable. I'd give it like a 9-10 tbh.

the last track's piano reminds me of the first track on that self titled Giles Corey album...

This is definitely my favorite Chelsea Wolfe record. I'm not really over how she manages to mix her soft eerie voice to those huge heavy guitar sounds and pounding primal drums. It sounds big and intimate at the same time, with that usual grim Chelsea Wolfe touch. I love it. Strong 8!

this album mostly reflects her struggle with sleep paralysis and vivid nightmares. she did an amazing job interpreting that into her songs

Love this album. I'm glad to see her return to the heavy and actually heavier than ever. Not that she should make every album like this but it really provides a nice contrast to the beautiful color of her voice.

I kind of feel like Abyss is her most diverse album yet. It's cohesive, but there are a lot more different elements on it than on Apocalypsis or Pain is Beauty in my opinion. Like, there are the dark, intense, disorted songs like "Iron Moon", then we also have an acoustic song which could be from her Unknown Rooms LP, we have "Survive" which has the raw sound of her debut, we have "Simple Death" which really goes into the electric, cold direction of Pain is Beauty. Everything feels dark and menancing, matching the topic of sleep paralysis and nightmares and all the styles are focussed into this, which makes the album very cohesive. But I really feel Apocalypsis and Pain Is Beauty, even though they also had different elemnts, were sticking to their sound in a much stricter way.

Please review the new HEALTH album & the new Ghost album when it comes out! :D

I know it's an older album and I'm only one request but could you please review The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me by Brand New? It's just a personal one that never leaves me. I'm sure I'm one of a million who ask you this type of request lol but I figured "why the hell not?" Because it reminds me a lot of what you want out of this album. honestly. from what you described about it. Like I feel like it could be right up your alley.

Damn, she actually does it again!, that is almost everything I loved about her in the last album, even though I think it could have used a bit more tough singing from her.

Compton ?

I have to agree with Anthony on the light 8 and might even say high 7. Carrion Flowers is probably Chelsea's best track yet, and I look forward to hearing it pop up in various movie/tv promos for the rest of the year, but the album as a whole is extremely hot and cold. When Abyss is on point, it's her best work yet, and when it's not, it's hardly listenable. It doesn't help that she released 5 of the album's best tracks leading up to the release date, leaving not much to surprise me with on the ultimate listen. Chelsea's "sads" such as "halfsleeper" and "They'll Clap When You're Gone" have always been my personal favorites, but here, with the exception of "Simple Death", there's really nothing of the sort. Though Chelsea Wolfe is one of my favorite artists, I still feel like I'm waiting for her masterpiece. Apokalypsis was still a little amateurish, Pain is Beauty was somewhat disjointed, and now Abyss is hit or miss. All that being said, this album is far from the disappointment I've become accustomed to over the last 5 years(see Zola Jesus, Rome, Khoma, Wovenhand).

Maw is sonically great, but it does use a redundant two chord progression which is often utilised as a shortcut to a melancholic mood by to many a composer to list.
