Don't let the "assembled in Portland" language fool you, since the Ratio 8 is still made in China. My Ikea desk, for instance, was "assembled in Portland" by me, but it was manufactured in China.

Love these 2 machines! Thx for the review Gayle. For all the people who want to complain and leave smart ass comments about the prices of these two machines.......go buy yourself a less expensive drip machine and quit crying. Most machines will make a good cup. These machines are beautiful to look at and give that pour over experience. Worth every penny if that's what your looking for.

Thank you for answering the specific questions about plastic in the machines. I don’t know why it took me so long to think about the toxicity of the Hot water on plastic going into my coffee. I have been organic for decades and stayed away from plastic for this reason and yet I was still brewing my coffee in a standard American coffee pot. Not anymore!

One material downside on the Ratio Eight is the Aluminum heating elements. I wish they would've used stainless heating elements. My Capresso H2O Plus electric glass kettle uses a stainless heating element and glass. The water never touches plastic. I wish I could find an automatic pour-over that didn't use aluminum or plastic anywhere that touches the water.

Omg literally the same!!! I’m so against plastic, I even drive to a natural spring to get my drinking water and fill it in glass jugs. I’m always drinking organic, don’t want to drink hot pesticides and here I am still using the mr. Coffee. Never dawned on me until now. Hopefully ratio eight lives up to my expectations!

Thank you for this great comparison video! I did have a question regarding the Ratio Eight. I saw another video remark on noticeable condensation developing during the brewing process along the outside top of the machine. Have you noticed this happen? I confess personally I'm leaning toward buying the Ratio, I like the absence of plastic and made in Portland factors. But then again hopefully rust wouldn't be an issue down the road. Thanks again for the shoot out!

1. You didn't stir the finished coffee. I thought you're supposed to stir pretty much any brewed coffee before you drink it, am I wrong? 2. How could you not mention price?? If they produce identical coffee, then that's basically the deciding factor, right?

How about a blind taste test between one of these machines and a true/ hand pour over? I'd be interested to see if you could tell the difference between them. Might even be interesting to get two or three people do the pour over - to see if you can taste the difference between everyone's pouring Style.

What would be the point of somebody else’s opinion? Taste in preference or an individual matter.
@logmeindog
@logmeindog 2 жыл бұрын
@@Meechka I think the idea is to see if the taster could identify the brewing method, not convey the brewer's preference. More than likely, the tester would not be able to identify which system was used, which is probably the point Samir was interested in confirming.

I do t see the point in this for the home user, it would probably be cheaper and be better just to get a Chemex and a kettle. Mabey if you had a super busy cafe and had one of theses on the counter you could have two chemexes brewing at the same time... three of your ambidextrous lol. I’ve seen it done

While I like the design of both machines, I really have trouble condoning the obvious price gouging in the Ratio. There is nothing high value in there. Thermal jug, similar ones retail at 30$ so cost price = possibly 3$. Ceramic Brewing filter holder, $1. Glass tank (optional) let’s be generous $10. Customised Glass Pipes $2, aluminium boiler (cheapest choice, aluminium is the worse for boiling water in) $7 all in, a bit of custom electronics for the switch etc $5 and I’m generous, custom powder coated cabinet with wood, $20. So best case, each machine costs less than $50. Sold at $600 without a mesh filter $39.

The Ratio Eight is made in Taiwan to boot. I personally would easily justify paying more for still being made in the USA. The Ratio Six is even worse, made in China. The Ratio Eight Thermal is manufactured in China, assembled in the USA, but costs *$800* !

So if one buys the The Chemex Ottomatic then one would have $245 to buy coffee beans at $20/lbs/mo for years worth.
@fordon20s
@fordon20s 4 жыл бұрын
The price is much better now and closer to the Ottomatic at $500. Still a lot of money versus the Ottomatic’s $350 but you get an all metal case, glass water lines and a 10 year warranty vs plastic everywhere including where your hot water touches and a 1 year warranty. It’s much like buying a Sony TV vs TCL or a Basset couch vs Rooms to Go, how much does quality, craftsmanship and user experience mean to you.

I don't understand the point. You lose the level of control of doing a traditional pour over brew. So if you wanted the automation and care less about control then at that point why not just use a drip machine?

Mohamad Nayal I have done both and had done the pour over manually for years but the chemex does a great job. t wets the paper at the beginning verrrry slowly then showers it! Love it! Also its faster when you have to make 2 or 3 cups! Just saying...

I have ADD so I often end up with room temp coffee by the time I make 16 oz. Would be nice to set and come back only once to check on the brew.

The pre-infusion is just supposed to last while the coffee mass is "blooming", i.e., swelling. As soon as the swelling stops and the bloom starts to collapse, then regular infusion is supposed to be started. 30 seconds is too long for the Ratio Eight to wait. By the end of 30 seconds, the bloom will have collapsed and the grounds will be on their way to drying out, which is a big no-no. That will affect the quality of the brew. If nothing else, the little trickle of water from the Ottomatic will ensure that the coffee mass in the filter will not dry out while waiting for the main infusion to begin. Personally, I haven't seen an automatic coffee maker yet that can reproduce the technique of a skilled Chemex coffee fanatic such as me--forty years and counting. Perfect Chemex-brewed coffee requires standing over the pot and tending the brew until the infusion is all but done making sure the coffee mass remains immersed in the water until it all drains into the pot, not stranded up on the sides of the filter with the water long gone, drying out before fully extracted.

Good news everyone! The Ratio Eight is now assembled in *Taiwan* -USA- ! (According to their website) While that certainly is better than China, it loses a few critical points for that. Add on top of that the Brandon shipping delays, you are getting less and less of what you want.
