Chemical Guys JetSeal - Putting it to the test!

I put Chemical Guys JetSeal sealant and paint protectant to the test. The results of my wax testing were pretty surprising. Chemical Guys promises 12 months of protection, fancy nano technology, durability, shine and beading. Unfortunately my results were disappointing. Points wise JetSeal wound up being the lowest scoring product to date. Does this mean JetSeal sucks? Is JetSeal the worst wax I've tested? No, the total score doesn't tell the whole story. You should visit my website to see how all the parameters of this sealant compare with other waxes and sealants:

You are supposed to let the Jetseal set for atleast 12/24 hours before washing it as the label stated. There is no time frame in your video but maybe you would see better performance? Very interesting video though! I would like to see you test it again to see if it makes any differance!

great no BS review...really appreciate it. Not sure who gave thumbs down. In defense for Jet seal, I could have sworn that users are supposed to put a coating of wax on top of it as it is just a sealant. Pls confirm? I'm not totally sure but I used to be a detailer for Lexus for about 4 years and learned a bit here and there.
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Appreciate you watching and the kind comments! As far as adding a layer of wax, it could improve the gloss. However, the durability wouldn't really improve much and my tests are designed to follow the instructions on the bottle. For durability sealants should be more durable than waxes as they're fully synthetic. People put wax on typically for more optical quality, especially organic carnauba based waxes that look real pretty but don't last very long. The thumbs down are because people take brand/product loyalty for detailing very personally. Some people feel like you're threatening them or implying they're stupid because they love and have been using/recommending a product you just gave a bad review to. Unfortunately they're only happy with that product because they bought into marketing and usually not based on any data or testing. It's part of why I'm doing these videos along with other content. I'm trying to take the mystery out of these products and give people ways to compare and decide what is important for their application. You'll notice most other reviews are just apply a wax, step back and go, look shiny, A+++! Ultimately to get big in the detailing industry as it stands today, you need to be a marketing company first and a great product developer second. Detailing products and their performance aren't easily quantifiable by most users like say sports cars. If you buy a sports car and its 0-60 sucks, handling sucks, quality sucks, etc... well it's really obvious. Users can compare more readily. Even then people's feelings still get hurt. Detailing is much worse, because being marketing first ultimately means these companies amass a religion like following. This means people get way more upset when you point out data. Another funny thing about the pervasiveness of marketing in this industry is that it also creates the opposite effect too. Meaning some people get that marketing is a huge part of the industry, but they assume it is ALL marketing. So they basically commit themselves to using the cheapest product on the market because "it's all the same stuff". Which is obviously not true, while marketing can be wildly inaccurate, some companies do make products that are clearly MUCH better than others.

Waxes always go on top of sealants. I use jetseal on my on my 2019 Lexus ES350 Ultra white Fsport, let it settle in 12 to 24 hours, then apply a carnuaba wax. Sealant last alot longer, but lacks in Gloss shine compared to Carnuba wax. Carnauba is much glossier but that doesn't last as long. Thats why people do the wax over sealant process.

The main thing is doing something that works for you :). If Jet Seal works then that's what matters. I would say expanding out and trying a few other things can always be fun. For example simple spray wax products have come an incredibly long way! Some of them have super easy applications and extremely long durability.

I washed the truck 3 times over, removing the JetSeal to my best ability, until zero sheeting and paint felt rough. Ultimately clayed the truck again and applied soft 99 dark in sections. I have a nearly full 16 oz bottle of jet seal. Not a great product compared to more modern sealants. However, to maximize performance, I let jet seal cure for an hour before buffing off and always add a topper- that seems to get me better durability. The thing about durability is that if you want to strip the paint of products and try something else, it's easily achievable with chemical guys. I spent the majority of yesterday trying to knock down turtle wax seal and shine before I ended up just mechanically removing it - 6 hours to wash, seal, and wax a car. Jet seal can be stripped and reapplied with a DA in a fraction of the time as other products with better chemical resist. Good review, I subscribed.

Scott, appreciate you watching and subscribing! Interesting, I may go back and try a longer haze time than recommended just to see if it helps. Is that the product you were referring to having to remove with your DA? If so I'm definitely excited to test it soon :).

What's wrong with the test? I literally applied it, let it cure, then washed it and saw it immediately fail. I can understand longer tests where we're comparing 10 vs 20+ washes, sure there can be some tolerance. This stuff literally immediately failed. Sorry if you like the product, but lots of people online are reporting this same experience in real world environments too.
@Dingo19206
@Dingo19206 4 жыл бұрын
Dmitry's Garage I agree with you. Letting it cure and then doing a few washes seems like a much less harsh test rather than applying it and having the vehicle exposed to the elements for several weeks, like rain, plus washes. I would think the product would degrade faster in the real world environment. Mine won’t be a great test because after watching your video I put a layer of paste wax on top of the Jet Seal. I just used The Last Coat on my wife’s car to test it out. You should do a video on that if you haven’t already.

I got Jet Seal in a bundle with two microfiber towels along with 5050 paste wax and I must say, Jet Seal only lasted me about three and a half weeks in this hot Houston weather lol. Not sure how Jet Seal would perform in colder climates, but the summer here just chewed it up. I'm sure it may last a little longer in the fall or winter here. Paired with 5050 paste wax, it did leave the surface feeling pretty smooth and a bit easier to clean, I got nowhere near the year Chemical Guys claims it can last. Maybe if they improve the melting point or strength of it to withstand hotter climates it could be better? I've been using Meguiar's hybrid ceramic spray wax lately, but I do want to try out the infamous Collinite 845+Power Lock Plus combination!

Gustavo, thanks for watching! Appreciate it. I try to not read reviews on forums/youtube/etc... before doing my tests to avoid tainting my opinion. However, after testing this wax I did some research to see how my results compared. I found quite a lot of similar opinions on enthusiast forums. Many said it doesn't last/isn't that great to look at. I found a lot of new users liked it, i.e. guys saying "this is the only wax I've tried, I think it's amazing". Which I totally understand, I was there myself and later I tested some waxes that I thought were good and realized I really just didn't have the data when I was starting out. I don't know that the Texas heat has much to do with the durability of this product. I applied mine inside an air conditioned garage at around 70F. Then I tested the durability outside, but it was cold out, less than 60F. The heat certainly won't help it though.

Hi there... just a quick note, I think it is not supposed to clean the wax with IPA, as it is likely a pro prep step to apply any wax or sealant to any surface, and will remove any residual wax or sealant, doesn't matter if it's been there for a while or if it's been recently applied - which will be removed even easier. Don't get me wrong, I find applying IPA to a waxed surface as a great intense/concentrated acid rain simulation, but in my personal experience, any wax or sealant will wash off after 3-4 washes (when this time lapse has passed, I do a detailed wash, decon and reapply wax). I wash my car once every 2 weeks or so, when not on a rainy season, or once a week on a rainy season, to avoid mud and road crud residuals getting stuck in the paint. So far, haven't had any paint related issues by doing this.

Do you know if you throw or use another applicator pad & buffing towel? or can you keep using it every 20 mins?
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hanna, You can keep using the same applicator for the entire job, as long as you don't oversaturate it (use too much product) or drop it on the ground. For the towel you can use it until it is saturated. You will notice it stops picking up product off the surface. To maximize efficiency fold the towel up and saturate one square, then flip it and do the other, then open it up and keep going. Then completely unfold it and do the same thing with the other side. You can also use two towels, one for the initial wipe off and one for a finishing buff. Depending on vehicle size you may be able to get away with using 1-2 towels, but for a large vehicle like my truck it takes at least 4 decent size plush towels and that is if I'm being real careful. I can easily get to 6.

I'm glad it's working for you Phil. You know I get tons of theories from people as to why it's not working for me. Too little, too much, didn't wait long enough (I waited 24 hours), etc... Ultimately I'm just trying to follow the bottle instructions like most people would and most other products didn't have this problem. I know some products benefit from layering or topper products or some special way to apply. However, it should just work if I grab the bottle and use it per instructions just like how I'd use a myriad of other liquid sealers I've tested without issue.

I used this one on an old car that is always outside (Belgium, so average temp not very high) and it easily lasted 10 months before the beading was lost (2x washed a month).. Not sure why you had such mediocre beading. Did you use a non-PH neutral shampoo perhaps? It definitely made the old car way shinier as well. (lots of swirl marks etc on there) It's the only product i've used so far, so I may try out wolfgang next.. +1 for the video

While I appreciate your attempt at a non-biased review, I don’t think you used this product correctly. The bottle says you need to let it cure for a day before washing. It seems from your video you did not do this. Also, sealants of this sort are intended to be applied under a coat of wax. it might make more sense to do a test where you wax 1/2 of the hood with jet seal underneath and another half without jet seal

I watch videos for detail products all the time, and Jet Seal is not a water beading compound. It is more for sealing in your glazes, ceramic coatings, and UV protection to give your vehicle an extra layer of protection. If you want the water to bead off you still need to apply those compounds, such as hydro slick before applying Jet Seal. They have a video on KZfaq that tells you step by step on what to apply first and what to apply last. I applied it on my 2018 F-150 after a ceramic coating. Have had the truck for 2 years in this hot Houston, Texas weather and have not had any issues. It actually improved the life of my ceramic coating because it actually still beads off after 2 years.
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, but I have to disagree with you. The front of the bottle literally says “Nano-tech Polymers Hydrophobic Properties.” It also definitely beads water before it wears off. Using a gloss meter its easy to see that the product is gone almost immediately compared to tons of other sealants. I would never put this on top of a ceramic coating.

@@DmitrysGarage I'm a little confused, it appears in the video you didn't allow 24 hrs for it to cure which it clearly states on the bottle. While Iv'ed only used it twice on a brand new Subaru WRX bought in April 2020 and used Jet seal the week after purchasing. I also run my car through a car wash which about every 3 weeks or so which is hard on any finish. I will readily admit it did last a full year but with that said it didn't completely lose it beading until the end of Jan. 2021. And, I live in SW FL (Ft Myers) where it is in low to mid 90's eight months out of the year so I think that's more than acceptable product performance considering the environment it's subjected to and I just finished applying a new coat of Jetseal 3- days ago. This is real life performance... You know what they say about opinions and this is just one to add to the list. Happy Camper...

Jake, I'd start pretty basic. Figure out a wax with decent durability that you like, you can check out my page/reviews if you need some inspiration. Learn a two bucket wash method if not using a foam gun with a pressure washer. Re-wax the car whenever it starts to show failure (no longer beading well). Work out a good routine for each wash you do and then start adding products as you find gaps. You can start working in some basic products like a decent tire dressing, an interior detailer, get a decent vacuum cleaner, maybe some all purpose cleaner for floor matts (if rubber) or carpet cleaner if carpet. Once you have that worked out well you'll start focusing in on smaller details like paint correction.

I always thought jet seal was for sealing and its hydrophobic properties. I use it on my windshield
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
JetSeal is indeed a sealant. Sealants in their function are essentially waxes, except they're synthetic and use polymer or ceramic compounds instead of organic compounds like carnauba based waxes. There are also hybrid waxes which mix organic and synthetic compounds. Sealants like waxes are primarily used on car paint, but can be used on windshields too. I'm not sure what you mean by water resistance. That term usually means to prevent water from getting into something, like a water resistant watch, which is not a thing sealants/waxes do. Do you mean being hydrophobic? Typically waxes/sealants/coatings are expected to be hydrophobic. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Chris. Sealants are just what we call synthetic/polymer waxes, this is because originally "waxes" were organic and based on natural products like carnauba. These days almost everything is a sealant (synthetic wax) or a hybrid, pure organic waxes are pretty much dead. What would be the point of applying a sealant if it didn't do what a wax does? My bottle of JetSeal says it gives 12 months of durability, has "nano-tech polymer hydrophobic properties", and gives a "sharp luster finish" and "high gloss shine on any color". It did not live up to any of that unfortunately. In contrast Wolfgang Deep Gloss 3.0 is a sealant, but it does all those things. You should read their website again, it clearly says: - Make contaminants slide off - Protect daily driven vehicles - Enhance high gloss shine on any paint color - Provide durable protection for up to one year - Make water slide right off What else is a wax supposed to do? They even talk about how it compares to traditional waxes: "Traditional waxes only last a couple months at a time. Chemical Guys developed JetSeal for the aerospace industry, which demanded strong protection for jet airplanes flying in extreme hot and cold temperatures."

I always wait at least 24 hours after application before doing each part of testing. This is standard across every test I do. I will wait longer if the instructions say to, but it's always at least 24 hours. What I do is I shoot these over three days. The first day I do research, prep the equipment, and apply the wax to the gloss test panel. The second day I film the intro, then I apply the wax to the test hood, and shoot the gloss testing on the 24h cured test panel. Then on the third day I do the slickness and visual appeal opinion, test durability, and then do my wrap up review. Movie magic makes it look like one day though ;). I usually explain the curing, but looks like I only touched on it in this video around 3:30.
