I tried it with the 3% H2O2 that I had under my sink for small scrapes and a mixture of 10g/L of potasium iodide that I had left over from my last job. Nothing happened. I added some iodine I had on hand, a 36% mixture of hydrochloric acid, and some baking soda for good effect. My girls loved it. It turned a few spots in my sink purple. I'm thinking it was where some grease residue was because it wiped right off. The smell of the hydrochloric acid was not a hit, but who likes the smell of Death's farts? After the chemical reaction there were no lingering vapors or smells.

so if the R.H.S is h2o + o2 .what is the foamy substance?
@AlChemicalLife
@AlChemicalLife 10 жыл бұрын
The foamy substances is caused by the soap that they added into the reaction, the bubbles from the soap contain O2 and Some H2O(g) [gaseous or vapor] it also contains iodine , and MAY contain iodine vapor (This is a may because, depending on the Conc. of the H2O2 depend, that will determine the heat and speed of the catalyzed Decomposition of the H2O2 in to H2O and O2 , the heat may in turn cause the Iodine that might have formed to turn into iodine vapor )

How can one notice that iodide is not participating in the reaction (2:10) ? It actually is reacting, see the brown discolouration especially at the beginning (formation of iodine I2 through oxidation of iodide by peroxide). Another compound namely manganese(IV)oxide MnO2 would be a better example for a catalyst of the decomposition of peroxide. But the experiment is still nice to watch!

If the KI is a catalyst, then why is there a colour change when the two parts are added? It's as though I2 is produced which would mean its part of the reaction.
@McVidsAndTutorials
@McVidsAndTutorials 8 жыл бұрын
I have tried such experiment in real life and when the reaction happened, extreme amounts of fumes started coming out of the foam, it caused some heat and it all smelled like iodine, so i would also say, that H2O2 reacted with KI. Just a guess : H202 + 4KI -> 2K2O + H2 + 2I2, then 2H2O2 -> 2H2O + O2 and then K2O + H2O -> 2KOH. So if my guess is true, then the reaction makes O2, H2 and I2. But i haven't tried to light the fumes. If it doesn't cause the mini-explosion, then my guess is false. Another guess would be : H202 + 4KI -> 2K2O + H2 + 2I2, then 2H2O2 -> 2H2O + O2, then K2O + H2O -> 2KOH, then I2 + H2 -> 2HI, and then KOH + HI -> KI + H2O. This kind of reaction cycle would only release O2. But this guess also could be false.
@TazPessle
@TazPessle 8 жыл бұрын
KI does not go around as a molecule. It's more like: 2K+ + H2O2 -> 2KOH + 2H+ + O2 There is the possibility of HI then forming forming. Either way, the K+ is regenerated when the H+ / HI reacts to neutralise it. Wikipedia says that IO- is produced so maybe: 2IO- +2IH -> I2 + H2O
