Our upcoming new release is CHEN VILLAGE, a story that revolves around life in Chen Village, China and Chen Family Tai Chi. There are 3,000 residents in Chen Village and 2,500 practice Tai Chi Chuan on a daily basis. Almost ninety percent of the residents bear the Chen surname.
In this feature length film we explore the growing number of Tai Chi Chuan followers from abroad that descend upon the village and how the Chen style and the generations of the Chen family have survived China's turbulent history to make Chen style popular all over the world. A fact mainly attributed to 19th generation grand master Chen Xiaowang.
It is a fascinating look into rural village life and Chen Village's claim to fame as the birthplace of Tai Chi Chuan.

Chenjiagou (Chen Village) is in central China about 60 miles west of Zhengzhou in Henan province. You can fly direct or take an overnight train from Beijing to the main city of Zhengzhou and then you need a taxi cab to take you to Chen Village or Wexian, the nearest main town. The taxi will cost about $60 one way. Avoid December through to March as it can get very cold and lots of snow. The Autumn and Spring are very nice. Empty Mind Films

Beautiful. I'd love to take my family and spend at least a year there. I've wante to study and practice Chen style Tai Chi for many years now. Unfortunately here in the part of Mohave Desert where I live we don't have any form of Tai Chi nearby. Like I said beautiful.

Overall a decent movie. I find the interviews sometimes a little drawn out, but the shots of training by the masters and the students help making up for those. Colors are vivid and the cinematography is good. Maybe I missed it, but they don't even mention where ChenJiaGou is in China; It's in Henan province. China is a huge country. Also, I find the choice of background music downright bizarre and distracting. There are so many ancient Chinese guzheng or guqin music pieces that could have been selected to provide a proper background music instead of Indian music. But if you can get over that, if your focus is on the taiji, then it's fine. Also, for those of us who understand Chinese, it would be nice to have the Chinese characters as an option for subtitles during the Chinese portions, to help follow along. So, despite the fact too many parts of this movie feel like a painful rambling and babbling infomercial, the training parts are interesting and so is the story of Chen village. Also there should have been much more focus on Chinese students and cut out those babbling and rambling testimonial to size. Also some learned exposition of different taiji styles contrasting Chen would have been in order... 太极好!

How long have you practiced Taiji Chuan? Have you been taught applications from both systems? Just curious, studied Yang for about 3.5 years but my teacher had to stop classes. Have a great day.

I really appreciate the work you are doing, but IMHO with this one you need to make it free. Sell the other ones but don't miser the Chen Village doc- this story needs to be told, if it's going to get told it needs exposure. Please make the Chen Village documentary publicly available. I'm sure I'm not the only taiji enthusiast who is hungry to get access to this story but doesn't have 20 bucks to spend on a file. Again, I really appreciate what you are doing and don't mean to insult you as a professional artist, but I think there is something bigger going on and if you were motivated to tell the story in the first place, hopefully you agree. Thank you!

@syphen888 and the way I learned - kata is total kumite. It contains all the techniques, concepts and principles that make up the art as a whole. Kihon is taken from kata. And Kata is Kumite/Kumite is Kata. This is Koryu Karate... Karatejutsu - as opposed to karatedo. In Koryu Arts, the Applications are practiced as Kumite. re-respectfully! :)

@danshaw1967 True, but it's the mindset. You essentially emulate everything the teacher wants you to do whether it's washing clothes, being Taoist or whatnot until you mastered it. Otherwise, you'd start questioning everything and pretty soon you'll stray. After you've mastered their interpretation/lifestyle, they even encourage you to have your own interpretation to the style. That's the beauty of traditional arts.

@gespilk said as someone with no understanding of what martial arts means would say. You may consider actually reading into the thinking behind the arts and leave your jaded misconceptions behind. I train in Shaolin Kung Fu and I have myself spent three years training Yang Tai Chi Chuan, My martial arts training taught me more about respect for life than anything else I've experienced. I hope you find the truth you arent seeing. Live well.

I dont think that Yang Luchan learned Chen style. Chen Changxing teached him what he learned from Jiang Fa maybe he also learned direktly from him. Yang Luchan was a slave of the Chen family and outsiders werent allowed to learn the family boxing.

@gespilk In short, if you ever plan to learn anything martial, you have much to learn. I hop you do, because that attitude....it doesnt speak well for you, and I get the feeling you are more simply uneducated in combat than you are ill mannered. Live well. As a final note, using MMA tactics in combat is not a hard thing, there isnt much true technique in typical MMA, its instictive fighting, little more. Martial art is about letting go of that and learning more efficent ways of combat.

@gespilk then your understanding is that of the supremely uneducated. Martial art is about many things including respect for life. Anyone who fights without respect for the harm they may need to cause to others to defend themselves is nothing but a brute, a fool and a dog unworthy of learning anything. That comes from my first instructor, a former Army Ranger quite used to 'true combat'. MMA is a sport with many illegal striking zones etc, and any good MMA fighter knows the difference. Sad.

"In essence martial arts are for destruction" To me that seems quite wrong. Or to be more precise: If you mean destruction of destrucion maybe you're right. Look at Aikido. Even Muay-Thai can be used for protective and creative purposes as well. "It is all about money." ...?!
