Southwest China’s largest metropolis and one of its greenest big cities has a population of 21 million. Chengdu exemplifies Beijing’s quest to modernize the country’s vast interior and is the lynchpin of an emerging eco-friendly mega-region in Sichuan province.

Scenic mountains ring the fertile basin of Sichuan province, a land known for its agricultural abundance and famous cuisine of chili-infused sauces and spicy hot pot. Its capital has been continuously inhabited for more than 3,000 years, the only major city in China to have an unchanged name and location throughout the imperial, republican, and communist eras-a history that remains remarkably well preserved.
In the second century BC, Chengdu was one of Earth’s largest civilizations, with 350,000 inhabitants. In the 11th century, the world’s first widely used paper money was created here. Unfortunately, things turned bleak in the 1500s when its residents were nearly all destroyed by a murderous Mongol invasion. For decades afterward, Chengdu remained so sparsely populated that wild tigers freely roamed its streets.
During the Chinese Civil War in 1949, Chengdu was the last stronghold in the country for the forces of Chiang Kai-shek’s Republic of China before their evacuation to Taiwan. In spite of its short-lived status as the capital, the city attracted loyal business people, workers, and academics-an influx of talent that founded many of the industries and institutions that continue to make Chengdu the premiere cultural and economic center of Southwest China.
In the year 2000, Beijing launched the “Open Up The West Program” to encourage immigration from its wealthy coastal regions and spread prosperity to its 12 poorest areas in the west. As an established metropolis, Chengdu has been a major winner under the policy. Its population has doubled over the last 25 years while becoming one of China’s most dynamic cities. Between 2010 and 2022 105 highrises over 100 meters were completed, catapulting it to 12th on the list of the world’s tallest metropolises. But high-density construction is happening all across China. What’s special about Chengdu is the amount of land local officials have set aside for parks, paths, and athletic facilities, an effort to make it as livable as possible.
President Xi has officially designated it China’s Park City Demonstration Area. Municipal leaders even brought in experts from the United Nations to better understand how ecological development can solve some of Chengdu’s most pressing challenges. One ultimate goal is to create the world’s largest continuous network of paths by 2050 by reserving 500 meters on either side of its largest ring highway, a project that will eventually produce 188 square kilometers of parks.

I lived in Chengdu, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and New York before. Among these cities, I still think that Chengdu has the best subway. It's new, clean, fast, and convenient. I have to mention that most of the skyscrapers shown in the video are located in a new area build in the recent decade, Tianfu New Area. In 2010, that place had no skyscrapers but farm lands. Such change is quite amazing. I believe Chengdu will be as well-known as Shanghai by more people in the world in ten years.

Question for you Junrui, how car-dependent would you say the infrastructure in Chengdu is? A lot of these pictures and video clips shown have suuuuper wide roads, biking and walking doesn’t look too reasonable. I’m sure the subway is nice if you live and work in areas nearby it, but how much of the area around the city is actually covered by subway close enough to reasonably access? Personally, even cost of a car aside I always like living in places and areas that can easily be navigated around by walking biking trains subways, without feeling like the look of areas streets buildings is designed for cars Hope this question makes sense, thanks for any reply in advance

@@Amaling I moved from Beijing to Chengdu a year ago and being happy since. Chengdu is building subway like crazy, it connects all the core city area(tier 1 districts) and also large part of outer skirt(tier 2 districts), and its still expanding. it has a 100km green city ring lane exclusively for cycling and walking. Chengdu also has the most registered private cars in all of China's cities, but its traffic jam is not as bad as Beijing, Shanghai.most roads has dedicated lane for bike and ebike.

I visited Chengdu during 25-28 April 2023, what an amazing park city. It is very livable, filled with very friendly people and amazing architecture.

I've had the opportunity to travel to Chengdu two times to visit a friend who was living there temporarily. Everything about the city was beautiful and clean. And the improvement in the air quality was astounding between my trip in 2017 and my trip in 2019. I hope to be able to visit again someday.

The speed and size in which China has done things over the last 30 years is astounding. 21 Million people in that city and only 25 million in all Of Australia, and Chengdu is just one of a dozen cities like that

@@TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel I’m not politically fluent with Chinas government and policies, something has to give and slow up there because the amount of excess output China could leave them vulnerable when other emerging mega populations year on year double digit growth from globalisation. A lot will come down to global politics these ‘wars’ that are being played out

This is my hometown city, the last time I went back home is early 2020, now at March 2023 I‘m home again, the most dramatic changing that I noticed during the last 3 years is how much green area that has been increased

Probably for the same reason China has lost a lot of foreign investment because of the recent espionage spying law against foreign investment more the foreign people. But China was beautiful and its people were the most hospitable in the world. These poor people today are suffering greatly.

Chengdu has a long reputation for being the home of intellectuals and the learned. People there are different from most Overseas Chinese who were predominantly uneducated Cantonese who immigrated due to poverty and lack of opportunity during the 19th and 20th centuries. Due to its higher cultural traditions it escaped most of the worst damage during the Cultural Revolution. That heritage is evident in today’s vibrant and confident population. You’ll enjoy Chengdu. Also Wuhan is worth visiting. It’s recent bad press as the origins of Covid not withstanding, it too has a more cultured and sophisticated population than other large cities just like Chengdu.

China has 100+ cities with more than a million inhabitants but only a handful of these are known by your average citizen of Western countries. Chengdu is one of the largest but is still little known. I do hope we can ratchet down the current US animosity with China because, as this video shows, there is much to be seen and celebrated in what China has achieved despite its massive population and environmental challenges.

I have visited the New Century Global Center a few times if only to just walk around inside it in awe. It's like what I imagine a human colony on another planet might be like in the distant future. It probably has its own weather. It's worth seeing if you're in Chengdu.

I been living here since 2016. It's a brilliant city. When i first arrived, i missed green. I missed trees, grass, flowers. Everything was so grey. Now going outside, it's green absolutely everywhere. The amount of parks and trees around is amazing. You should also look into Chengdu's planned "Future City". It will be incredible once it is complete.

In fact, China has a surplus of electricity. China's power outages are not due to insufficient power supply, but to achieve carbon neutrality. It seems that China is the only country in the world that is seriously implementing the Paris climate Agreement.

Great video, brilliant visuals. Everytime I don't look at China for a while then look back I see the future staring back at me and wonder at how parochial and backwards UK cities are in comparison to the scale of Chinese cities now. You realise fast that only a strong EU could hope to compete with such a behemoth, not only to stay afloat but also to improve the citizens of their old countries too. It's not a panacea by any stretch, but man are they doing some development right, and rapidly. We seriously need to catch up.

It's just the natural order of the prosperity-decline cycle that nobody can escape from. After people living in obscenity for a while they always tend to let it slip one way or another.

the issue here is the world competition these cities were built via cooperation and socialist policies with people in mind china is not competing with the west it's creating it's own path on the go. a stronger EU will just steal resources from global south countries faster in an attempt to compete with someone not even competing with them. what china has achieved without going to war, invading, couping, other countries and expropriating resources from the global south is the only thing you need to compete with, being as peaceful as china is the only competition you should want with them.

Just went back to Chengdu and cycle around that cycle track last month. One of the best cycle track can be found indeed. The do spent a lot on buying all the land needed for that cycle track tho, somewhere near 0.2 trillion.

I think this is where China differs from India. China has a strong sense of order. While India is now an economic giant, I don't think it has a clean steering to where it wants to go.

lived in Chengdu for a decade, had some incredible memories over there. No sure how I feel about its rapid development though, doesn't seem natural. Hopefully it survives the housing/bank crisis.

It will do just fine. It's the rust belts, the least desirable cities, the first tier cities which were too leveraged that got most affected. Chengdu safely sits in the middle.

If you do Chengdu should be your first choice. it's modern but not as depressing as other tier-one cities in China. plus it has the best food and beautiful sceneries nearby.

In India we only talk about getting green spaces but nothing happens. Take for example, Mumbai where i live. There are many high rise buildings which are being constructed at Chinese speed but the city is lacking open green spaces. I know for the fact that Mumbai don't have a land area the size of Chengdu but still in other metropolitan cities of India the problem persists.

Ali my understanding is mainly due to India’s land ownership laws which takes into account ancestral ownership which makes it next to impossible to properly city plan thus prime real estate is extraordinary expensive and will be surrounded by old small buildings that should’ve been torn down ages ago . However this was conveyed to me over a decade ago when I was Mumbai by my India hosts as I was complaining about the $450 USD a night room (it was located on queens necklace) that would’ve cost $150 in Hong Kong and it was so small. Indonesia seems to have similar land ownership law as in Jakarta where I’m currently based, you will often find modern skyscrapers surrounded by huts due to ancestral ownership. Is this still true in India today?

Amazing place which is growing fast. You forgot to mention though that Chengdu is one of the least sunniest cities in the world, whith roughly 1.000 hours a year. It must be quiet depressive.

in fact ancient sichuanese people were almost entirely massacred in 17th century. People who live in sichuan now are most likely actually not their descendants. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhang_Xianzhong#Devastation_of_Sichuan

I'm from Chengdu, and I've been to Singapore for a while, but in terms of public transportation, I prefer Chengdu, and taking a taxi is more convenient and faster. Chengdu really makes a city with a population of 2,000 extremely harmonious and the best city to traverse.
