@@lecheman01 as far as the series goes he considered himself a nobody who was of no real consequence. Someone like this would be unwilling to challenge the status quo and adhere to the party line at first. All the top officials of any communist regime in Europe new the system the live in is worse than the western one. But they new they have only 3 options - go with it and make the best of it, don't support it and never move up or escape to west. Well he knew how the government would act in international relations. Much like North Korea and other countries today, the USSR lied and always tried to put positive spins on international bad news involving the kremlin. This scene shows just how extensive the disregard for the human and the environmental consequences were by the officials, trying to save face instead of lives. Scherbina thought he was inconsequential, but that was because he acted like every other minister until the true scope of the disaster was realized. Once he started to act and get shit done, he was the only consequential man in the kremlin and the world today is better for it considering the size of the accident and what truly could’ve been if it weren’t for the likes of scherbina and legasov

I had a hard time grasping how radiation can destroy electronics. Turns out that it works exactly the same as it does on living tissue. Simple components like motors are largely unaffected, but things like diodes and computer chips are much more sensitive. And... it straight-up damages and destroys the material it’s made of. That said, it takes somewhere around 10-100 times more ionizing radiation to destroyed electronics as it does to destroy us.

Ionizing radiation causes dislocations in semiconductor devices, gradually impacting functionality until failure. This has been discovered with nuclear weapons testing and space programs, but was not widely known until long after Chernobyl happened. Even now if you put a digital camera near areactor you can see snow in the view followed by an accumulation of dead pixels until it is too damaged to continue.

The smile and reaction when the first robot work out as intended is an amazing lead to this scene, is like he was saying "Finally, no man will have to go there, no one will suffer anymore because of this". Then, the most important part cannot be cleaned, because of some misleading Information, he already knew what would happen, Lagasov gives the biorobots Idea but deep inside Schcherbina knew that the biorobots was the only way out, and only because some high ranking idiots cannot tell everyone How bad they mess up... Even today you can find video of it at work - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grl3ltFeusevh40.html at the time 4:38, but yeah, the level of radiation was lethal even for robots...

While I commend HBO for their accuracy I think it should be pointed out that in reality this scene played out slightly differently. So firstly the "Joker" robot was able to remove some of the radioactive debris from the the roof it was assigned to. This roof was referred to as "Marsha" and was the most contaminated. At some point the robot ran over a large chunk of nuclear graphite which became lodged beneath its right tread and prevented it from moving. Eventually the tread motors began to fail before finally seizing up completely. The camera feeds remained active however the quality had begun to deteriorate. They concluded that a winch needed to be setup manually in order to reposition the robot and free it from the graphite it was stuck on. They also needed someone with a radio to get close enough to the robot so they could direct the winch team on how to dislodge it. The Joker robot was freed but it was no longer operational.

And for the reference, the f***tards that made this movie somehow pinned the responsibility for this on the "propaganda number" which is of course has nothing to do with the reality. See 2:40, this series is complete joke. Like this Joker robot.

Some of my friends have interpreted Scherbina screaming "Of course I know they're listening, I want them to hear it all!" as a reference to Legasov and Tarakanov waiting outside. I always thought of it as a reference to KGB listening in on the call.
@user-gv3zr8gx5h4 жыл бұрын
It's not even that it's KGB. Yes, technically KGB does the listening. He is a party man and the KGB can't do anything about him. He was the deputy chair of the cabinet of ministers. This means that he was on the roster of the central committee of the communist party of USSR. Only they could fire, reward or punish him in any way. And you can bet it was reported. The committee then did a review. To be fair, the party did provide a certain leeway if the results were achieved. Otherwise, he would likely have to accept a position with a lesser responsibility. With his standing, he could go to some smaller country with good weather as an ambassador. Or may be become a university president. He made a mistake, but he is a Soviet man, a comrade. Once he rests for 2 or 3 years and regains his composure, the party could summon him once again to contribute in full capacity.

@someguy49155 жыл бұрын
@ಠ_ಠ Most of the scenes are fiction, the meetings, Boris yelling over the phone, the KGB following them like that, it might be 'based on real events' but it's all fiction in the series written for drama. Same with the '2-4 megaton' explosion claim which so far no credible source seems to support nor is it possible, it's just for drama. Or else the naked miners, the directors themselves have said it wasn't accurate but just for shock value (as HBO loves showing genitals)... They also left out the small army of scientists backing up Legasov and sent the wrong operator to the roof, they somehow also left out Legasov himself checking out the reactor and luckily they didn't show how the firemen really died (it was much worse than shown in the series). It's a fun series absolutely, but as any series it is more drama than realism which is always a slight disappointment when covering such a dramatic event already.
@someguy49155 жыл бұрын
@ಠ_ಠ Oh absolutely they did a great job, just replying to the guy having his mind blown by how historically accurate the show is which while it captures the spirit of the disaster quite good it is not a documentary (obviously) and should be considered a drama based on real events instead of a scene perfect documentary series. In the end I'm just disappointed they only made 5 episodes, then again another episode of three guys killing animals would get rather boring so not easy to stretch it into more episodes anyway they did a great job.

Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard definitely deserve to win Emmys and Golden Globes for their fantastic performances. This show truly did justice to history: everything the Chernobyl nuclear disaster was, how people were affected by it, all the things people did to keep the situation from getting worse, the honor, comraderie and sense of duty to God and country displayed by the people of the Soviet Union's workforce, the questionable decisions of the higher ups of members of the governing committee, etc. Truly HBO's Chernobyl was a masterpiece.
