Using a hatchet, adze, gouge, drawknife and spokeshave, I carve the outside of a green cherry bowl.

You are very welcome. We are working on a new bowl carving video showcasing several of our tools while carving a large cherry bark down bowl.

Loved the video! I really want to learn how to carve like this. I've been collecting all of the tools, but I still need an adze, and the knowledge of how to properly sharpen everything. Anyways, thanks for the video!

Hi. Came over from Liam Hoffman's channel. I'd love to see a run through of your shop/tools, you have some great old machines there! Amazing work!

Very good Jason! I'm about to carve a salad bowl from pecan. The tree was cut down on Tuesday so the wood is pretty fresh. Two days old.

Мое уважение людям обладающим таким уникальным ручным инструментом. Но не это Главное! Главное в том, что они используют его по назначению!

Another great video, thanks Jason. Can never understand why peeps want to do a thumbs down on a guy sharing his talent and skill so others can learn. Any chance you could post a list of the hand tools you used on this project ? Or did I miss that? Cheers from Calgary Canada.

I've been waiting for this and it didn't disappoint. Well filmed and very informative, I like your relaxed approach. Your tools look wonderful, did you forge them all yourself?

How old is the wood you're using? I'm trying to make my first bowl and I'm using a seasoned piece of firewood that I think is silver maple that I had lying around and I can't work the wood very well. My hatchet doesn't make deep cuts, and my gouge has a hard time carving. I'm not sure if it's my technique, the age/dryness of the wood or my tools being very cheap. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The fresher the better when it comes to carving bowls. While the wood is still "green" or full of moisture, it is soft and carves much more easily than when it is dry. I do most of the rough carving green, and only the finishing cuts after it has dried.

Thank you so much for your advice! I’ll give it another go on a greener piece of wood.
