I was fortunate enough to get more Cherry firewood into the woodyard, however it wasn't exactly how I wish it would've been. More of everything Back 40 Firewood here: www.back40woodhound.com #back40firewood #woodhound #firewood

Late commenting on this one. Nice looking cherry wood! I'm fortunate to have them on my property. I split them down, sorting out the bark from the heartwood, then further split it into "sticks" THEN, chop saw it into cooking wood for the BBQ smoker. The cherry is great for almost any smoked meat, pork, fish, beef, etc. One of the least harsh smoke for cooking. The bark pieces get used in the fire pit, again, makes a nice open fire, without harsh smoke that can drive guests away from the camp fire. Gotta love the cherry!

Black Cherry is plentiful here in Northern Indiana. Sure makes some pretty mini firewood. It is probably my favorite wood to work with overall but you're right, it wants to rot from the inside out even while the tree is still alive.

This is how I try and spilt all my wood. I want to give my roadside stand quality, bark free wood…plus it dries faster and no bugs. The bark holds moisture, I’ll burn it in my woodstove and leave the pretty stuff for my customers.

Nice Cherry Wood Dan. I did Get some from my Tree Service Guy that Brings my Logs. I Cut it up into 9.5 to 10inch pieces for my Woodstove. Great Wood and smells so good also. Burns Wonderful also. Not doing anything today outside as there is about 6inches of Snow on the ground. Using my 5ton Electric Splitter today doing MY Rounds up. Not much about 15. After that taking it easy. See you on Friday Night Live my Friend. Ron from the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY.

One thing you haven't done in quite a while is splitting wood with your dad on videos I miss seeing that. It would be nice to see and I'm sure a lot of people would agree.

The smaller volume, higher profit model is a winner, no doubt. "Value added" as Joe wood say 😄 Be great to see it really take off for you.

Nice score on the Cherry! Lucky for you that your brother goofed and cut the wrong tree. That's what you call serendipity right there. 😂

Different looking cherry wood as compare to my area. Bark on our cherry trees is similar to white birch, but it looks like a dark purple. Ants just love our cherry trees while they are alive. Our cherry wood rots quick after dead.

Dan another great 👍 job on the cherry and video 😮😊❤

If you cut them down to 5” prior to splitting, you will have less grain interruption if that makes sense. Less thick to skinny pieces with the 5” than the 16” long stuff.
@Back40Firewood2 ай бұрын
That's true, but think it might also have been tough keeping the round from twisting, turning and rolling with the chainsaw cutting it....not sure.

@@Back40Firewood can we make a small bucking station to cut shorter logs down to 5”rounds? Just something to have around when the need arises

The stroke on that splitter should be 6in shorter as safety device ⛑️ Love the smell and smoke infusion of cherry wood in my wood burning oven.👍🏝️🇨🇦

Good morning Dan. Wish we had more cherry around here. Just starting out and I am not real sure if there is a smoking market in my area much to speak.

Yeah not much around my area either...the smoking market can be tough to find, but once you do and have a good product you'll have customers coming back.

A square piece of cherry, good luck with that! That stuff can be rather twisted and split off easily.

Good times being able to play around with some already cut cherry rounds. In your mini heat treating process process, do you have to adjust the drying time for various species like oak, etc.?
@Back40Firewood2 ай бұрын
Nope, the heat treatment process doesn't really dry it much. The wood has to reach an internal temp of 140 for 60 mins and then is done. There are sensors that are placed in holes drilled into the pieces of wood and then the temps are monitored and recorded. Species of wood doesn't matter either.

Wondering is it an option for y'all to give the customer the choice of bark or no bark on their firewood
@PicMartSkunkWerX9 күн бұрын
I cut/split cherry down to heartwood pieces, no bark, for the BBQ smoker. Look at what stores charge for a little bag of BBQ wood chunks. The cherry splits would certainly sell to serious BBQers.
@arnecarlsson97402 ай бұрын
Shifty, Here is a free suggestion to improve your luxury fire wood production! Go to Harbor Freight and get a lathe, center the round on it and use the turning tool to remove the bark and protruding knots! Then you have bark free rounds to split for the minis!😬😬😬
@Back40Firewood2 ай бұрын
That sounds like it would be way over a hobbyist skill set to pull off!
@Python_Bob2 ай бұрын
@@Back40Firewood Maybe over a hobbyist skill set, but what about a PROFESSIONAL Hobbyist? 😂
@waynetharp2 ай бұрын
I understand having bark could potentially add debris/mess in your boxes of mini. However...especially with the Cherry. You are losing a lot of the smell and lighting abilities both when removing the bark. Cherry bark is usually full of resin, which is what makes the wonderful smoke when burning!🔥
@Back40Firewood2 ай бұрын
But.....when burning in a 'smokeless' fire pit what would happen....lol
@waynetharp2 ай бұрын
@Back40Firewood I said smoke but meant smell when burning...A little bark isn't gonna change smoke amount that much even with resin on it.
@lyleharkness-rv5vf2 ай бұрын
Have you considered an angle grinder debarker? 🤷 It would cause less waste from splitting off the bark, and preserve the round edge for the real firewood look.
@Back40Firewood2 ай бұрын
Haven't thought about that....think they make a debarker attachment for a saw as well. Splitting the slabs off the sides isn't so bad, I just use the slabs in bundles to sell.
@lyleharkness-rv5vf2 ай бұрын
Fair enough, I haven't used either myself and not sure if the time debarking would be worth the results. Maybe if it increased the yield by 25 percent, especially on cherry that you don't get a lot of. Nice video 👍
