www.sitmeanssit... This Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a few issues that we will be dealing with in the next few segments of our daily dog training videos. Today, Bob and Christa Hunt go over some of the dog obedience and behavior problems that they have with their dog 'Timber' in hopes of being able to have an improved relationship, and quality of life with their dog. Stay tuned for part 2.

People like this are the reason that our last few Chessies have been rescues. People think they are getting a curly Labrador and then discover they have the dominant of doggy world. Though they are all retrievers, Chessies have completely different bloodlines because Labs, Goldens, etc. weren't hardy enough, with physical or mental toughness. (Which sounds stupid, but you try getting a Golden to fetch 200-300 ducks in a day.) Labs and other retriever breeds are AKC listed as sporting dogs. Chessies are listed as working dogs. Be prepared to work with your Chessie. If you are not prepared to correct (and "win") the constant testing your Chessie will do, get another dog or your house will be ruled by a dog who thinks for themselves. Also be prepared to keep them entertained, or they will find something else to entertain themselves that you might be too have about. People have talked about them hitting three years and "changing." Three years is when a Chessie hits "adulthood." They are one family or one person dogs. They can be very protective, and if you don't have your Chessie well trained (or even if you do, but have one that is simply very dominant and is determined to protect you at all costs) they can become "aggressive," though really "protective" is really the correct action, and, for some Chessies, you have to be careful about introducing them to new people so they don't see them as a threat to you or your family. If you don't know how to handle a Chessie, and you don't know their character traits, and changes in behavior as they go from being a puppy, a "teenager," then adulthood, please stay away from them. They are amazing dogs, but they are not for everyone.

I agree of course and Im sure you understand in a effort to combat misinformation about the breed I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are menebers of the sporting group just the same as Goldens and labs and are not members of the working group

I have a chessie..from show, dog sport, and hunting lines. I got him from a breeder who breeds chessies for correctness , health and temperment for 20 years. I got him home at 8 weeks, gave him several hours to settle in and started his first clicker training session. He's only been positively trained, super socialized and naturally raised (balanced raw meat/edible bone/organ diet and no vax or flea/tick/hw poisons.) He's my seizure alert and response/PSD/mobility dog. He was/is a super eager and fast learner from only having positive and FORCE FREE training. Works in just a flat buckle collar. My trainer has border collies, and tried to drill my chessie with making him do hundreds of repetitions of the same thing, like she has to do with her border collies. Well, after about 5-10 reps my chessie knew it pat (all positive training, even for directed retrieves) and would simply refuse to do more. He'd walk away, run around the room counter surfing for treats ect. It really pissed her off that a chessie was smarter than all five of her border collies! He's a huge swimmer, loves dock diving (has several dock dog titles,) is a Therapy dog, got his cgc, does comp. Obedience, is super friendly to everyone he meets (if working, only once given the say hi cue)and is a very food driven dog. Has an awesome work ethic, when he's wearing his service dog vest he's all business, but always wagging his tail! Loves to work. He has fun doing rally, nosework, some agility, lots of dock diving/swimming and anything else for an attachment boy praise from me. He'll Retrieve dropped items for my elderly parents, and heels with them around the house, so they don't have to worry about tripping over him. Never an ounce of aggression in him.

I have had chessies my whole life. My last one had some aggression issues with dog and people. It was not from any lack of socialization and exposure. It is simply a characteristic of the breed. Socialization helps, but after they turn three they begin to behave dominant and act like big dogs. I have noticed over the years that the chessies from strong hunting pedigree tend to be more aggressive and more difficult to handle.

He is just being a Chesapeake. It is the nature of the beast. I have had Chessies for many years. That dog needs to be fixed and needs lots of exercise, and a strong handler without being nasty.

Fred: I think it should be mentioned to the owners that the Veterinarian and or assistant did not cause the pet to be aggressive. They just challenged him outside his comfort zone. I think it would also be important to point out the importance of safety for other people pets around this particular pet, in which a muzzle is a good tool to use during training.

omg he's so protective of me, I'm so scared. Do your research before you get a dog people. Chessies are incredibly protective hunting dogs. It's their job and it's been instilled in all Chessie blood lines. these idiot people are why so many Chessies end up in rescues. They're not labs, not even close. next time get a lab if you want a happy go lucky dog. and do your research next time!!! ugh! Chessies are not for inexperienced dog owners or handlers! gah!!!

Kayla Wyatt Well put. I have a big male I duck hunt with. They are great dogs strong and loyal. But you are so right they are not for the faint hearted or the passive handler. The whole train with a 2x4 is a total farce but you can't put them in impossible situation like these people have done. Very unfair to the dog. Your right that's why Chesapeakes get stereotyped as being surly stubborn beasts. Happens too often

Eric Jensen probably thought it was a curly Labrador when they got it. Guess again day and night difference. Very unfair to such a great breed of dog

I think the lady that owns this dog makes him nervous and aggressive from the way she acts . It is not the dogs fault

Does anybody actually realise that this poor dog is wearing a prong collar! UNBELIEVABLE! Whenerver it pulls or gets pulled it learns that whatever is scaring or simply exciting him leads to pain bein inflicted upon him by his owners. I am amazed by the lack of dog training knowledge here.

Prong collars are not bad. For a dog that does not care about the pressure of a less intense collar, a prong collar can be a great option. This is especially true when owner strength is a concern because using a prong collar will greatly decrease the amount of pressure or strength of correction needed to change behavior. They work very well for many of my clients.

If you dont hunt 2 months of the year about 2-3x a week, you have NO Busines breed of s owning this dog, it is a dead Serious Working dog. Do yourself a favor and get a Golden or Lab. These are serious ass dogs not to be taken lightly, you do the dog and you a disservice..
