Pawns are the often-overlooked "little guys" in chess, but as you progress in skill you'll realize just how vital these foot soldiers are! Watch as I discuss key structural considerations (isolated pawns, doubled pawns, backward pawns, pawn breaks, "hooks") and take on Chess.com opponents in an attempt to demonstrate the importance of pawn play.

So I was searching excavator videos which took me to piplines>welding>machining>lathes>wood lathes>making chess pieces on a wood lathe>John Barholomew's chess videos... Now I'm playing chess lol. Anyway, thanks for the excellent content and lessons! I never knew that chess could be so intriguing.

Who does almost 90 minutes of mostly (completely?) unedited uncut instruction and live commentary while they are playing? Very well spoken and presented, some great lessons to learn. Just think of all the hacks out there who can't even make it ten seconds without having to splice together takes even doing brainless headphone reviews. I'm sad there's only one more in this series, I wish there was 20. Top notch quality!

I've devoured the first four of these videos all today, but I think the insight of trapping the C and F pawns behind the Knight near the beginning of the game being a potential issue will be huge for me when I get a chance to put that knowledge into practice. Excellent stuff! Thank you.

Well, could’ve captured pawns and not pieces. But even then, the bottom pawn of the six could’ve not taken anything, and the opponent definitely has more than 5 pieces.

I’ve become a better chess player by putting your teachings on the board. I learned chess from my dad at age seven and as I got older playing on the streets with kids, I ended up playing in our high school team in Oklahoma City in my senior year in 1979 winning a few key games for my school, going on to winning the City high school tournament. I was the strongest player they had then and due to my Iranian chess heritage growing up in Tehran till age of 14 and migrating to the US in 1975. I stopped playing all together until my retirement last year at age fifty nine. Most of my opening strategies and general chess tactics were lost to memory. I was blown out of water on chess.com and very depressed about it. Then... I found you on KZfaq!!! Within a month or so I climbed from 800 to 1100 rating. Though it gets tougher from here on, but I’m confident i’ll climb up the ladder fast with you as my virtual second. Thank you John.

John, your videos are always as instructive as they are entertaining. Your commentary as the game unfolds is so coherent it’s like listening to an audio book narrated by a captivating author. You, the hero, take us on your hero’s journey and this third installment of your trilogy is loaded with suspenseful moments, especially the last game of the video. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. There were many useful lessons in this “pawn play” episode, like how to avoid getting beaten by the clock.- by not spending too much time formulating a strategy. When you were running out of time in the last game you kept your cool and did less long term planning, focusing instead on making simple threats just to see how your opponent responds, letting the response guide your next move. Taking advantage of your opponent’s blunder is another way to win when the clock is against you since many players resign even when they have time advantage because of having made a shocking blunder. That’s what happened around 1:19:53. Your anticipation of that blunder allowed you to capitalize on it immediately, thus trapping the knight. So that’s another take home point of this video: stay vigilant to potential blunders and try to anticipate them so you can jump on them instantly and thereby wrap up the game quickly.

John, you rock! When you play in these videos it all looks so easy for you, so jealous. Thanks for all the material you are putting on youtube, I really appreciate it. And by the way, I just finished listening to your conversation on Perpetual Chess Podcast, very cool. Keep it up!

This is a very useful video! I think this is the kind of instruction that helps beginner players like me transition beyond the basic obvious knowledge of good chess. Thanks!

Fantastic video series, I cannot wait for the next one. I think it would be great if you gave a video about minor pieces to segue off from 'pawn play'. Im sure you have tons of useful strategies that everyone would appreciate. Thanks for all your time

It's just crazy to me how easy you make chess look. When I watch these videos and work along with what you are saying, I feel like I am seeing way more moves and understanding the game! Then of course I go play a game myself and sweat it out the whole time trying to think of simple moves Keep up the great content

Hey John, Thank you for the great video. I am very impressed with your teaching style, its very accessible. I like watching you play. This is very informative. I believe as an amateur, this style of watching a master play and hear what his thought process is is very insightful. Keep it up
