Philip Casnoff is such a phenomenally underrated, but talented actor and singer. He makes antiheroic and villainous characters like Freddie and North and South's Elkanah Bent fascinating, interesting, and somehow not really likeable but understandable and damn well memorable.

What really sells this is Freddie is talking to a reporter during an interview but it is staged and performed like he's talking to a psychiatrist during a therapy session which it is clear is what he really needs. The man is constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown and won't admit it.

Can we just give it up for Philip Casnoff singing "Pity the Child", one of the most difficult Broadway songs to sing??? The song combines Broadway & rock vocals with raw emotion, and an incredible tenor range that has to be belted. Not easy to sing at all. The ending, singing & belting while SITTING DOWN, which does obstruct the diaphragm, is amazing. I am in awe. Mr Casnoff nails it.

I am working on a fanfic for Chess in which Freddie adopts Florence and Anatoly's son after the two get into a car accident. Even though, I let people picture whichever versions of the characters they want, in my mind it is this cast and definitely Phil's Freddie. (There are a few allusions to this like jokes about Freddie's short height and a reference to the famous publicity photo of Phil, Judy, and David that make it clearer.) I was too mesmerized by this version of the character after seeing North and South with my Mom and siblings and watching this version of Chess on KZfaq for me not to use them.

@@julieporter7805 I would love to read that! It sounds like a fascinating concept for a story. Freddie is such a complex character. Clearly brilliant, a chess rock star. However, he has so much childhood damage...and rage. I would be interested how he comes to grips with that in a fanfic: he had such a dysfunctional childhood & now is trying to raise a child on his own. Feel free to share the link when you have completed your treatment.

How dishy is Philip Casnoff?? And what a terrific voice, too. The first time I saw him was in the 1986 miniseries “North and South”. He portrayed Elkanah Bent, not a very sympathetic character but he did a great job with it. A very talented actor.

That dramatic HOT WHITE SPOT shining down on david Caroll (the video dosent do it justice) was the same that Judy is under when she does the re-prise of ANTHEM at the end of the show. But, when she does it the light gets brighter and hotter as that last big note "...my heart" goes on yet all the other lights on stage totally black out so, @ the end of the note, she is in blinding white light. its so bright that when it blacks out, your temorarily blinded yet still retain that last image of judy

I saw this musical with the original cast and couldn't understand why it didn't run longer. I wanted to go back and bring others to see it. I was so blown away by the amazing performances. Also sad that the world lost such an amazing talent in David Carroll. I enjoyed Josh Groban s performance of the character but still cannot replace David. ❤

What a great voice he had. Nobody will ever sing Anthem like he did! The true tragedy of David's life was not only that he contracted AIDS, but he got it so early in the treatment history of the disease. By 1992 we barely had a handle on it.

I HAD wore out the album 2 cassettes tapes and several cds. so as a CHESS freak I was blown away to see it on broadway when I thought it would never leave London. it was 1:30 PM I run to the box office...'2PM curtain' "YES" "hi, please tell me you have a seat for me" "Sure, take your pick..how bout 6th row center?" "whoa..that big of HIT huh?" she nods OHwell FUCK EM ALL it's front & center with Judy Kuhn! Her ANMAZING reprise of Anthem @ the end gave me a showtunegazam I was weeping!

I was in NYC & had a free day from the road. so I go into NYC to catch a Matinee. I walk down 45th and there at the Majestic was a NEW show called The Phantom of the Opera! (yes I'm dating myself) WOW I love it I gotta see it. forget TKS if your alone you can see ANYTHING. theres always 1 seat. but, not this time SOLD OUT! I decided to come back & see how long the 'cancellation line' is at 6pm. I continue my stroll around the corner & GASPED when I saw it: CHESS! I couldn't believe my eyes

To this day, one if my favourite musicals. I saw the London production and I love the Broadway recording. So many great talented singers, such a great score. Sadly the story itself wasn’t compelling at all, because it leads nowhere really but to disappointment for most of the characters. I think if the story had been better, it would’ve been a success. I love Philip Casnoff as Freddie. Such a great voice, it’s a pity you can only find snippets of his vocal performances online, would’ve been great to see and hear more of him.

We all got in! but although I loved the music I was left cold by the show. in fact, I overheard the guy from Iowa turn to his wife, next to me & say "Geez, we coulda saved a hunerd bucks & waited for da Phantom on ice, back home:" My sentiments exactly. CHESS was a WAY better show yet overlooked & ignored! sad

David Hodel, why the past tense? Is Judy no longer with us or no longer singing? She had a brilliant supporting role in Fun Home just this year. First saw Judy Kuhn in Rags and sat up and asked myself, "Who is she??????" I soon found out as she went from strength to strength and great performance after great performance. Her turn in Chess was by far the best I have heard, she blows everyone else who ever tried singing Florence away.

How come this show was never revived on Broadway?
@JF-sh2sm
@JF-sh2sm 3 жыл бұрын
Because when the show came to Broadway, the plot suffered from severe modifications: songs were deleted, lyrics were rewritten and the story became a mess. It was truly outrageous what the Americans did to this wonderful show. The original West End production had its flaws, but compared to the Broadway rewrite, it was truly a masterpiece.

2:12 is the tackiest dance moment I've seen in a musical. The dancing fake "Thai" character. The dancing was very good but the choreo and concept oh so wrong.
@julieporter7805
@julieporter7805 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's the point. The song is from Freddie's point of view and that's how he sees Bangkok as tacky and overdone. He is displaying his conceit and pomposity in this number.
@chocolatesouljah
@chocolatesouljah 3 жыл бұрын
@@julieporter7805 I very much appreciate your insight. I will view it again, but my compliment was for the dancer's ability rather than the way it presented as integrated choreography. I am a dance teacher, who tends to think there could always be more dance and dance played broadly, but this seemed like. a drunken uncle at the Bar Mitzvah reception imitating 'hip hop' rather than the garishness of the intent of the number. Having said that, I see your point and it does make more sense to me now.
