25 күн бұрынIt was Magnus Carlsen vs Hikaru Nakamura at the 2nd round of Norway Chess 2024. After putting quite some pressure on Magnus in the classical game, Hikaru agreed to a draw. In the Armageddon with Carlsen having white pieces, 10 minutes and a must-win scenario, he took on Hikaru, who had 7 minutes and draw odds. This game is an exhibition of Endgame mastery. Using a camera with higher resolution would allow the viewer to see the live clocks in the background. This is especially reasonable for rapid or blitz games when both players are playing with seconds left on the clock in time trouble.

It's called armageddon. It is use to settle drawn classical games. Whoever gets the white pieces needs to win the game because a draw would equate that black wins the match. So in compensation for being put in a must win situation, you get more time than your opponent.

The time difference is intended to provoke a result. Black can try to pay for a draw but is against the clock, white has time advantage to push for a win. Basically black "wins" if they draw whereas white has to win.

@@chan8772 nope, i learned afterwards that whoever played white in classical will get white in armageddon.That's different from normal armageddons where players with lowest bid gets black

@bhejafrier To break the draw they have to play Armageddon game. Here white has more and black has less time. If the game went draw then black is the winner .. so white has to win in order to claim victory meanwhile a draw is enough for black to succeed.
