Jeremy Silmans Books kept me out of trouble and chaos while I served 22 years in prison. How to Reassess your chess and its explanations around the imbalances made me have a reputation in the prison yard as a strong chess player. I send my condolences to Mr. Silmans family and friends.

Silman was my go to guy. I made several videos of his imbalances, and so many thanked me for doing so. RIP my teacher/friend

The enduring popularity of Silman's works is a testament to his great skill as an educator. Decades from now, aspiring chess players will still be learning from his books.

Botvinnik told us how important it was to study our own games. Silman showed us how to do it. Kotov told us how to methodically calculate each of our candidate moves. Silman showed us how to FIND our candidate moves. Godspeed Jeremy.

My game was stuck, and a college buddy told me I needed Silman's Reassess - broke me through to 1400's. The way Silman wrote about chess made it feel like we can all play good chess, no matter our level. Back in those days, chess was almost like a cult of the world champions, and it occurs to me today that we need to take time to honor all other great figures in chess. Silman was one of the best of all time at what he did.

That was an excellent tribute. His How to Reassess your Chess was one of the first books I ever bought and read about 10 years ago. RIP Jeremy Silman.

My condolences to the Silman family. He was very kind answering my emails re his endgame course. He will be greatly missed.

I was privileged to have met IM Silman in 1992 when he visited Alaska. He was very generous with his time , postmortems and instruction. Over the years I wrote in several times to him about his column and he always gave wonderful, thoughtful replies. I mourn his passing.

I am gutted to hear about his death. Only last August I finally took it upon myself to finish reading Reassess your chess after taking a few years hiatus from completing it. I am so glad I did: It was amazing book full of so many life lessons in chess and experiences of the man. His endgame course and his positional book are truly great reads!

Amateur's Mind, How to Reassess Your Chess, and Winning Chess Tactics are on a small list of books I nearly read cover to cover. His writings and teaching style really shaped my chess. RIP

I can honestly say i play chess because his great lectures series was what started me out again. I was not even thinking about chess but his series led me to his books and i got hooked . great teacher and i am sure he will be missed greatly.

What a sad notice... He was such a fine friend to me, for so many years...I just can't believe it. We have such a wonderful time at my home when i lived at Buenos Aires.We have such a nice encounter with his wife Gwen and him. I am speechless.

Very sad to hear this news. I always used to wish him happy birthday on Facebook and would slide in “the greatest instructor of all time” to remind him of his greatness and he would always be super modest.

The Amateur’s Mind is responsible for taking me from a frustrated beginner to happy hobbyist. I really came to understand why my moves were mistakes. Silman was a very skilled teacher, and it’s likely that he would have been a great teacher in any subject he had chosen.

Very sad to hear, probably the greatest author in chess. Always enjoyed his witty humour and not boring me with endless lines without any comment. Quite fitting his last book was about his chess oddysey, I will definitely be giving that a read soon.

Silman really changed the way I thought about chess and about teaching chess. I'm sorry that I will never be able to thank him in person for that, but my students will know him through the many lessons he taught me and that I plan to pass on. I specially appreciated Jesse's note about how quixotic and difficult it was for someone in Silman's generation to do what he did. Great conversation. Thank you 🙏

After playing poorly in a local chess tournament that I organized on Saturday, Sunday afternoon I revisited my copy of A Complete Black Repertoire (Chess Digest, 1986) by Silman, and then I see this today. Condolences.

An anthology of Jeremy Silman's best magazine articles would be a fitting tribute to him, bringing his US magazine work to a wider audience.

As you get good at something it’s difficult to stay in tune with the woes of a beginner or intermediate player. No one did it better than Jeremy Silman. This man made me enjoy this game more than any other game in the world. Thanks for the video on him. Super interesting.

Sad to hear. I have just finished chapter 6 in Silmans Endgames and now my confidence in endgames is better than ever. In my youth most of us hardly ever really trained endgames. Nice book with many useful rules to follow and go back to again and again. Reassess Your Chess I'm not to fond of, but I might give it another try later on. Haven't used it with a board. Regarding blitz I believe you are spot on. In clubs many player below 1700 just want to play blitz and are not improving a bit or very little. Winning a chess game and training for it is hard work. Many seemes to not grasp that. Thanks for another great talk. 👍

Jesse mentions that 'kids aren't reading books these days' but I think that's why 95% of them never reach master. The best students in the dojo program certainly do their reading. videos aren't enough
