My point isn't that mistakes can't happen; it's that given the situation, he can't possibly have *missed* the other line entirely. That's just crazyness. I think that would be much more extreme than a grandmaster missing a mate in one. Anyone can overlook something that blindsides them, but if you're in a position that early in the game where you're faced with a queen sac, you're going to take stock of all the available options. And this was such an obvious idea, any patzer alert enough to notice the mate threat would spot the counter move right away... fianchettoing the bishop is one of the most obvious things in the world to do (it's not an "unusual feeling" move like the mate in one Kramnik missed.) That's how commonplace the counter-move was... it's a move that has its own special name. It's like... it's like the difference between getting in a freak accident with a lawnmower and losing your arm, vs. getting your arm stuck in the lawnmower (while it's off) and having to cut it off with a pocketknife out of desperation so that you don't starve to death. Freak accidents happen to everyone, professionals included, yeah. But the idea that someone would cut off their own arm without thinking long and hard about it and trying to figure out another way is... incredible. It's a different kind of incredible than simply being careless and missing a threat. To me, I think this is much more surprising than a grandmaster missing a mate in one. Because it's a conscious decision he made, not something that snuck up on him. And he definitely had lots of time left on his clock. The best I can figure is that there was some other danger he thought he saw deeper in the other line that turned out to be a mirage, but it was a danger that was so bad that he somehow thought it worth it to try rolling the dice on a queen for two minors exchange instead. It's an interesting mistake from a reigning world champion. I'm not denigrating him; I just think it's surprising and interesting to figure out how it could happen when he had an hour to think about it and he must've known that sacrificing the queen was an almost guaranteed loss.
