I have been playing this without knowing it’s the Ruy Lopez. After I found out, I thought why not learn how to actually play it. So I watched some guides and didn’t understand anything besides memorizing a couple moves. For those who haven’t watched other guides: This guide is so easy, it’s insane.

in my opinion, your style of explaining openings and such is outstanding. the topic is explained thoroughly and well, the visuals and scenarios you give make it so much easier to understand, and to be honest the overall way it's taught makes it a cakewalk for anyone (even people who literally started like 3 days ago (and i know this because this person is literally me)) to learn it with little to no difficulty. and this goes for practically all of your videos which is why i like all of them, much love. keep it up. :)

To add to the praise of all the others, thank you so much. Actually explaining the “missions” of the pieces is something I’ve never seen anyone do, and means that I actually understand how to use the opening, especially in my 700 elo where the other player will often make a mistake and I don’t know how to punish it. Thanks to your previous video, I’m already dominating with black with the Caro-Kann, raising my elo and having a blast. Keep it up mate!

I have been playing the Ruy Lopez my whole life, and it's pretty much how I conceptualize it. The Ruy "storyline" is very easy to follow once you know the key ideas... Awesome video 👍, that's the vid I will recomment to people saying the Ruy is too complicated... (...hi there Levy!...)

I just want to acknowledge that your approach to unpacking these openings is really well done. To draw an analogy, it pains me the way music is often taught in a convoluted "memorize this" way and I'm still looking for the same boiled-down approach in that sphere. Often teachers will tangle you up in overcomplicating things for the sake of giving themselves more work. There are many bs teachers like that in the chess sphere just like in music. Your videos are really popular because they're actually helpful. Thanks.

Your explanation at 8:19 isn’t correct. The Berlin Defense happens when Black plays Nf6 on move 3. If Black plays a different move on move 3, The Line for Black has a completely different name. If Black plays Nge7 on move 3, The line is called the Cozio Defense. If Black plays a6 on move 3, which is what happened in video, The line is called Morphy Defense. The reason the lines have different names is because different Grand Masters played those lines and they implemented different strategies against the Ruy Lopez. ------ The Berlin Defense (3…Nf6) doesn’t defend the e5 pawn. The Berlin Defense tries to do a glorified trade of E pawns. Ruy Lopez player has a mission to win E5 pawn. The Berlin Defense player doesn’t care about whites mission. It allows white to win E5 pawn in exchange for black to win E4 pawn. ------ The Cozio Defense (3…Nge7) aims to defend the e5 pawn. The Cozio Defense tries to defend with blacks other knight. Ruy Lopez player has mission to trade off bishop for knight on c6 in order to win e5 pawn. The Cozio Defense plans to defend by recapturing the knight on c6 with his knight on e7. ------- The Morphy Defense (3…a6) aims to defend the e5 pawn. The Morphy Defense tries to defend by breaking the White Bishop line of attack with the pawn move b5. -------- Again - Different players all confronted with same dilemma. They all played the situation differently.
