The color of his sound, the technique, the expressiveness in the simple way of bending notes, the phrasing. There has never been anything close to Chet Baker. Many have come close but it was simply a gift from God given to this man to play this way. He heard things that nobody else heard, almost like voices coming to him as he played through the pain of his every day life. Beautiful, sad and simply amazing. Thanks Chet, I will always love you.

It's difficult to believe he had less than a year to live at this concert, such a great talent from a sometimes-tortured soul who had the talent of 10,000 musicians. In his singing here, around 20:00 you can tell he "tongues" with his voice like he does on the trumpet! Such inner talent -- remarkable. Superb jazz from all the players, at this concert. I would have loved to have jammed with these guys! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS so we can continue to enjoy Chet -- though he is gone, his great talent and his music lingers on.

+Rick Wade Well I am 69, and started listening to jazz at 5. Been 64 yrs of some of the most talented musicians of the era of jazz. Have never tired of the music form! Grew up with Miles, for he was a friend of my father. Chet was so talented, but then I've heard some of the best. For those who upload these on YT, thank you. Miles, Chet, Coltrane, Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Monk, Silvers, Hubbard, Evans, Getz, Hampton, Hutcherson, Jackson, Hancock, Joe Henderson, Coleman, Wayne Shorter, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ron Carter, Clifford, Lee Morgan, Mingus, Monk and the list goes on and on. This music is a national treasure!

Started listening to chet when i was a teenager in minneapolis in 1958. I was 14 years old. Brubeck, miles, chet, ahmad etc.started my lifelong love of jazz. l Was lucky enough to see chet live in the mid eighties in san francisco (about the time of this concert). When i walked into the club i couldnt believe his beautiful sound it filled the club. I did'nt know he had such a big sound! Their will only be one Chet. A true master artist who is sorely missed!!

When you play an Intrument with the experiences of life ringing through with a unique such a unique talent. It's real. Real life. Real emotion can't be fabricated. This performance shows his wounds. Fantastic. Tears. So good. Love him at this point in his life. You can't duplicate this. Thank you Chet. Thank you.

Wow! I have to agree that Chet is sounding as good or better than ever. Thanks, I'm so glad I found this video performance of him. I just saw a screening of the new movie on Chet Baker, "Born to be Blue" and have say I highly recommend it. Unlike movies like "Whiplash" which to me is a Hollywood dramatized portrayal of a jazz musician's life, and probably most musicians would agree is 50% bull, this is a very honest and straight ahead depiction of Chet's struggles in mid-life and his constant battle with heroin addiction. Ethan Hawke, who was a guest at the screening said the movie was based on "It’s a movie about the intersection of professional triumph and personal failure" and Ethan said Seymour Hoffman (who he worked with and admired had died of a cocaine and heroin overdose a year earlier and made a big impact what he portrayed Chet in this movie about how many great artists who have early fame often fall into depression) Anyway, Ethan Hawke did a lot of research (by watching youtube interviews with Chet as well as live performances like this one) to really get into the character and style of Chet and in my opinion does a really first rate job of it. The movie is on the sad side but is pretty honest attempt to be true to the reality of his life, which was a battle between his love for music and his addiction to Heroin which led to his death at 59 years old in 1988 a year after this live performance. It's so great to see him playing so great all the way to the end.

@ultimatesaxophonelessons7822

+LWOPP -- Yeah, I agree! Ethan Hawke definitely has shown that he has range and depth in his acting. And his looks for this role imo is excellent. One of the great things is that you never get the sense that he's acting the part. He looks totally comfortable in the role and you can see he's really done his homework, so he looks very natural as a musician and trumpet player. He nails not only his personality and mannerisms but also his music and musical style. He even sings in this movie which shows a lot of guts and he pulls it off beautifully. I had no idea it was Ethan until he was asked the question in the interview after the screening of the movie. It made me appreciate the movie and Ethan's role in it even more. He's a very interesting in an interview. Very entertaining guy without trying to be funny or witty.

His acting is good, but not when he plays the trumpet (well he looks good and he feels what "he" plays, but that's it). Of course, I didn't expect him to use the correct valves for tones, but they should have at least used oil for the valves. One can here a clean note, but the third valve is going up slowly (impossible and it will not happen to a professional) You here a long note, but he changes the valves without a change to the tone? It's only small things and maybe the majority doesn't take notice of it, but there are movies about musicians that take details into account and make it more realistic. But thats the movie. I love chet baker =)

Chet is just the best of all time. I'm sorry, there's no debate. We are blessed that his music survived and we get to experience it. Life might suck, but it's nowhere near as bad as Chet's blowing is good. RIP Chesney. Thanks for the music.

Never heard him In better condition. He was In Top, Top form on that night. Chet Baker fans needed about 50 more albums from the Master before his death. So sad!!! R.I. P. Chet and Thank you very much for your career. Luv ya baby!!!

All the way from 1:10 through 1:15, Chet has an amazing run, where he showed what he could do. And Diane had him looking sharp. He was very well dressed for this concert as well as being in top, top form. We miss you Chet and always will. Thanks for recording so many great albums. R.I.P. Chet. And to Diane, thanks for taking care of him and helping him at every turn. You and God only know what you had to put up with. God bless you Diane!
