The greatest weapon against a depressing world is music.

The first time I met Chet Baker, he was playing at a little neighborhood club called Strykers on 97th & Columbus Avenue on Manhattan's Upper West Side. He was coming back after years of an extended period of absence, having diligently devoted himself to re-learning to play trumpet with dentures, which everybody told him could not be done. But he persevered and prevailed, and this was one of his first comeback gigs. Awesome! I never heard any trumpet sound like that! I don't think it could ever be captured on a recording: So intimate tender innovative & personal...sometimes just whispering & breathing infinite silence space&timelessness into his trumpet...He just loved music & making music so deeeeeeeeeply & innately: just making the purest finest most beautiful sounds and blissful ethereal effects. Chet Baker was truly a great Maestro of the highest degree, a natural-born precocious musical genius like Mozart! During the break I came up to Chet to thank & enthusiastically congratulate him. In my over-enthusiasm I started telling Chet how much I also dug & admired & had been imitating his singing for years, and automatically went into my little imitation of him singing “I Wish I Knew” till I caught myself & felt embarrassed & silly & said,“Oh no! Here I am doing my Chet Baker imitation for Chet Baker!” He just smiled & said “You don't look old enough to remember that record.” (1955 LP called “Chet Baker Sings& Plays") He looked gaunt & emaciated, almost like a derelict. But his voice and manner were very polite mellow kind & refined, sensitive gentle very personable sweet good-natured & very likable, casual cultured & very well-bred. I asked him if he would sing during his second-set after the break. He thanked me for asking but apologized & explained why he really couldn't because he was working with just a bassist & drummer & no piano... He excused himself when his band-mates summoned him to prepare for their second set. There were just a few other people at that very small dimly-lit cellar club that night. My date was a nice girl who had the same last name as me though we were otherwise unrelated, I barely remember her, but we were both blown-away by Chet! When Chet came back from the break, he opened his set singing “Just Friends” Bless his heart! Still feels good that he honored my request & was singing just for me! His singing always kinda reminds me of Alfalfa from “Our Gang” I still listen to Chet's music almost every day now, often listening to him continually all day long, and when I try listening to something else for a change, I find myself missing his familiar soothing sound which is so much an integral part of me, I find myself unable to listen to anything else & hafta sink right back into that sweet fine&mellow transcendent celestial atmosphere he creates so effortlessly & endlessly... PS: I had given Chet my business card that night, and to my surprise & amazement-first thing in the morning--he called me! But that's another story for another time now... That happened in Hollywood back in Feb. of 1969 at The Melody Room.- I was the one who bought him his flugelhorn, and watched him for many months re-learning how to play all over again, suffering from Trigeminal Nerve Damage to both sides of his cheeks and jawline. He went thru a lot of pain, but he never gave up. Then finally, after many months of re-learning, he was finally able to play a complete tune. Soon after this, I got him his first comeback gig at the Melody Room on the Sunset Strip, a few months later helped him to get a record contract at MGM/VERVE called, "BLOOD CHET & TEARS"- The rest you can read in my book of memoirs about Chet on (amazon.com) under the title, "Chet Baker: The Missing Years"- Artt Frank.

Last year Chet Baker, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk gave me a secure comforting space to return to studies after a fifty-five year gap. I now return to the reading and writing in the company of friends whose troubled lives masked genius and humanity and warmth needed for the lonely hours. They have enriched my life and I hope that future generations discover them.

Trumpet is one of my favorite music instruments because it is an extension of the human voice and it symbolizes joy, light and serenity. Chet Baker wasn't of my generation, not like Chuck Mangione. Now more than 40 years later, I'm taking the tiime to listen to him blowing the horn and I'm discovering beautiful tunes like "No Problem". A few years ago, I saw a short video showing him in a small bar among people who didn't seem to know who he was or care about him, as if he was a hobo paid with beers to play a few tunes. It was during the last years of his life and he looked qulite miserable. It broke my heart. Such a great jazz trumpetist... Because of that, I'm paying respect to him today in memory of this giant of jazz history.

I heard the first song when I was a 7 y/o in 2007 in my Uncle car, years later I spent hours thinking and searching for this song and now that I gave up and almost forgot about it, it pop ups randomly and I finally find that great song !

This album opens up like a pathway to a nice city at night with bright lights and people laughing in the streets, a vision of a mundane heaven, where the chaos and the order goes along together, and as you walk you can glimpse Chet Baker playing in a small club with a selected few listening to his immortal trumpet, yeah!

No problem got me crying in shock at the sheer beauty

I'm a lucky fella -just got done listening to Lee Morgan for a couple hours and now it's on to Chet Baker for a couple more! Life is great and aren't we blessed to have had these 2 gentleman play their horns just for us?

Chet Baker may be my favorite, "Soloist" of all time. Beautiful, melodic, always pertains to the beautiful melody of the song. Good ole Chet.

There is something here that deeply moves on the soul level...but it seems to be beyond words to explain

Jazz has such a different appeal for me. Its a pretty new one, but I've noticed that in the past I always enjoyed it when I heard the genre played on kids shows like Hey Arnold or little Bill on Nick. I miss those days. I'm grown up now but I've realized this beautiful music is something I've been missing out on. Its hard to put to words. I can't help but feel its all good. Depending on the song it can evoke celebratory feelings of a party or gettogether; evoke relaxing feelings like being alone in your room just thinking about your life; or just be the general backtrack to your day and make sense of the hustle and bustle of daily life outside. When it comes to any other genre I'm nitpicking it or criticizing it at some level and pretty much waiting throughout the song to see if I like it or not. Waiting to see if the song is either good or bad acording to my ever changing standards of music. Not with Jazz. It improves the silence in a way, gives it personality, and doesn't feel like an activity to listen to. I really enjoy this album. This is just incredible.

The beauty of Jazz music is that it is so accommodating.

I was a little kid in the 70s,and I really have not much reason, but somehow I always feel a particular nostalgia and sentimentality for jazz music from 60s and 70s as it just seems so "right" and soothing to me, like it takes me in my mind back to a particular era that even thinking of how gritty and problematical many aspects of life were then, I still find a strange magic and beauty to those times in my mind and soul. Many great musicians ,artists, designers, and writers in those years.

Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan were once called "the prettie faces of Hollywood". Drugs abuse affected Chet's carriere and disappeared for many years. However he's still a superb trumpetist. NHOP (RIP) was a master of double bass ever since he was a teenager. Thanks, Pedro for these beautiful tracks.

I just stumbled on this album while putting on jazz in the background for studying. Surprisingly I recognized some of these tunes and just didn't know what they were called! "The Fuzz" is great. I didn't believe it at first, but Chet Baker is for me

When I first heard this, I thought how fresh Chet sounded. Amazingly his playing didn't change over the years. He is well-known for not playing louder than mezzo-forte. As soon a I heard his horn I thought it was an album from the 60s. His playing always gets me. Niels-Henning is one of the best bassists. Again, thank you Chet for taking me there.

Always loved this album. I have a record shop/store in the UK and about 6 months ago a lady came in selling some records and also a beautiful charcoal sketch of Chet and Stan Getz playing live. It's a lovely thing and signed "Beautifully done, thanks Chet Baker 83" I have had it reframed and its hung in my office at home. She has no idea how it came into her ownership, someone had died but all she did know was that it was done by a drummer!
