Hey Chris! Thanks for the video. We just installed an upholstery kit from Sewfine for my 1963 VW Beetle and after watching your video, realized we could’ve saved a lot of cheddar by making our own seat cushions using poly foam. Seats look great.

ALWAYS put those new skins outside in the hot sun for more than an hour.... Do this OUTSIDE in the HOT SUN.... HEAT IS YOUR FRIEND while doing this... I promise you, it is 10 times easier... 2. Put some plastic over your foam, before STRETCHING new skins on your bucket seat backs... they slip on a lot easier, otherwise, pulling those new skins on a seat back is like pulling a pair of pantyhose on a 600 pound woman.

Ive recovered several seats by now. A couple of good tips. 1. put your new seat covers out in the hot sun for an hour or more before starting, that softens, loosens up the stiff vinyl... Better, if you have a black or dark colored car, put the vinyl covers on that hot car in the hot sun for a hour or so, as you are disassembling the old seats. 2. Use some plastic, dry cleaning plastic works best, but a plastic trash bag will work too, pull the plastic over your foam, then.. that warm pre-heated vinyl cover will slip onto your seats like warm butter. After hog ringing on the new skins, I like to let the seats sit out in the hot sun for another hour or more, for the new vinyl to soften and take its new shape. The corners and every where that you have STRETCHED and HOG RINGED, the stitching and thread will be stressed and weakened somewhat, by letting the finished product sit in the hot sun for a while, softens and gets everything to stay in place, without ripping.

yeah at 1:19 I see the crinkle listing wire as your going across marking the places for the hog rings. I missplaced the listing wire so darn it I had to order more. It got smokey and is bad air right now so it worked out won;t get the wire for a few days. I m going to recover my 76 Silverado seat next summer or if I have time before fall.

Where are you located? I’ve got an 86 Toyota pickup bench to do and I’d like you to do it. It’s gonna need spring repair also.

Research electrolysis on KZfaq to remove all the rust from the springs and seat frame. Then use a por15 rust paint. Brush it on.

Yeah, doing upholstery isn't rocket science. Experience makes everything easier and jobs come out better, but if you've got the patience, you can save money by doing most things yourself. This mind set applies to a lot of things. Upholstry, roofing, deck building, landscaping, painting, bodywork, drywall, engine building, brakes, lift kits, electrical....you name it, a lot of trades can be accomplished with 10% of the pro's tooling if you have patience and are willing to learn. .
