A variation of the GM T-Car for the US market launched, the Chevrolet version initially used the Vauxhall Chevette hatchback body design but from 1978 a new 4-door hatchback body was available. This is a promotional film detailing the 1984 model year changes.

I owned two Chevettes! A 1983 light blue four door model and a 1986 dark blue model 5 speed manual! They were both extremely excellent and reliable transportation! This car wasn't trying to be anything but basic transportation. This was back when there was truth in advertising. The older one I eventually sold to my younger sister when I bought the newer one and both cars lasted for years without issues!

My 1st car was an 84 CS. It wasn't the greatest car, but I had some great times with it.

Lucky! My current daily is a 83 base 4 door. I wish I had the CS. I don't even get heated rear glass.

I owned a 1984 chevette s automatic hatchback and loved it, it could carry 4 bales of hay, 100 pounds of grain, my greyhound and myself with no issues. It would start no matter if it was freezing outside, and got great gas mileage! Mine was cream colored with black vinyl seats and black carpet.

Parents were hit from behind in like 1980 by a drunk driver in the overnight hours. They survived the crash somehow. The car was totaled. The guy took off so we know they were drunk. This was a time when they had no safety devices in the cars. Really amazing how they survived in such a small car that didn't seem like it was made very well. Even if the car was drivable they would not be able to catch the guy with such low power.

I quite like T Cars, and the Chevette seems solid (if humble)...but those rather unappealing GM stooges in the video aren't sellin' it to me!

I could also move my chevette out of a snow bank if i slid into one with no issues, it was light enough i could put it in neutral and roll it out by myself, i was impressed with that little car,and i couldn't do that with my escort i owned before my chevette.

Here's an odd thing about my chevette, i would start it, remove the key and it was still running, i met someone recently who has a 4 door and his does the same thing? Just wondering if that was a normal flaw with all Chevettes?

My Mom and Dad had two when I was younger, a gas powered 1978 four door and later a 1982 diesel - both automatics. Acceleration was poor in the gas model and abysmal in the diesel.

I had one of these pieces of junk. The engine blew up at about 35,000 miles. Honda and Toyota's for me since then.

Salty roads on the floor pans, timing belt is a maintenance item.

Why did the shock towers go bad if the Chevette was a good car?

What are you referring to? I’ve never heard of this issue, and can find no supporting information that details such an issue. If you had this problem I would say it was an abnormal condition it was exposed to

If 91.6% are STILL on the road, that means only 8.4% made it back home! NOT a very good showing for reliability!
