The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Bison may lack the high-output bragging rights of the Ram TRX and the long-travel and wide track suspension of the F-150 Raptor, but it has a few features of its own. For starters, it's less expensive than those two trucks, and it offers a locking front differential and Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers. In this video, resident suspension expert Dan Edmunds explains how the ZR2's suspension works and shows how much it flexes compared to other trucks with the Ramp Travel Index test.

9:14. I love this in-depth look at the suspension, particularly the ground clearance of the unprotected shock mount (at least the differential has some skid plate or bash guard).

Thanks Dan for doing this video because have been waiting for you to do one for the Silverado ZR2 and you did thanks again. Since then have upgraded my ZR2 tires to 35’s the same specs on the hummer electric truck as I will not be able to clear 12.5 “ wide tire without a lift, so I went with 12” wide and am not going back as the truck feel more planted now, and I just love the ride better too plus it’s greatly improved the look and the ground clearance on it…..all without any front or rear lift kit. All stock plus a little trimming just to clear the 35’s from lock to lock., plus it’s nice to drive by and the Raptors guys look at you be like is that a ZR2 on 35’s?. because the truck just look like its came from the factory that way.

I hate the unprotected shocks. I hit a rock with my 05 Duramax and had to cut off the shock mount, straighten it out and weld it back on then replace the broken shock. Military trucks have bolt on skid plates on their trucks.

Nice job ! Thank you sir for making a more in depth video about this trucks suspension. Now does anyone know if its the same a arms and spindle as other silverados ?

Why isn’t that stiffener in the front LCA cast in? Seems like that strength would be needed regardless of trim and also seems like an afterthought.
@ALMX5DP

Yeah that was interesting to me as well. Wonder if it’s just an adaptation of a normal Silverado control arm which doesn’t have that or something?

@dbeckMSP
@dbeckMSP 10 ай бұрын
@@ALMX5DP exactly what i was thinking. My car has triangular shaped LCA and it's just a Car(TM). Visually it seems like if that stiffener weren't there the control arm would have a major weak point. And if they all have it, I don't understand why it wasn't designed differently. Hopefully Dan responds and can teach us what we're missing.

It's for turn radius.
@fastindy
@fastindy 10 ай бұрын
Because the center of the leaf spring is passing through the center of the forward spring mount bolt, I think the idea is that there will be less movement of the axle forward or backward at the spring perch. If it's flexed with one side in full compression and the other in full droop, and the axle moves slightly forward on the left side and slight backward on the right, then there will be some toe angle generated, but obviously the same on both ends of the axle.

The Ford Raptor's numbers would also perform better rock crawling, not just Baja style off roading. Would like to know the price difference between the Silverado and a Raptor. I'd take the Raptor any day.

The used market will tell you. As of this week near me are lots of ZR2s in the $55-$60k range. Used gen3 Raptors are still in the $80k+ range. Damnit 😢

Listen up advertisers, if I'm watching a KZfaq video and have to sit through your commercials, not once, but twice, I'll never purchase one of your products. That said, I'll never buy Degree deodorant. There are others I have banned because I had to sit through their whole ad. Ridiculous.

@@ALMX5DP My fkn eyeballs and years of offroading and rock crawling. Prices keep goin up, quality keeps goin down. Sure the shocks are nice. That's great. If the supports are weak or in vulnerable spots it kinda defeats the purpose. They like to label all these mega buck truck packages as offroad and whatever but reality is you gonna warp the frame and brackets in several places with just minor bashing. No sense in it. Oh yes, I know I know, it's not made for that. Right, it isn't. Which is why they should stop making ridiculous packages with ridiculous claims and slapping a ridiculous price on it. People should just realize if you wanna offroad something then you better off buyin any ol cheap jeep or truck and building it up. All these trucks are just decent work trucks meant for the road.

@@st33ldi9ital has anyone broken the components you speak of on what you’d consider “harder trails”? Just looking for some substance here instead of keyboard warrior assumptions. And of course Dan is being paid, he is a journalist who makes content for C&D. Not sure why you assume C&D is being paid off here.
