I review the 2023 3.0L Duramax Diesel LZ0 in the Chevy/GMC 1500 and give you my opinion as a heavy diesel mechanic on how this engine drives and performs on the road. I discuss fuel economy (mpg), acceleration, gearing and driving feel in comparison to the first gen 3L Duramax diesel engine

I hope everyone had a good weekend! I am back with this beautiful GMC elevation with the 3L Duramax diesel engine in it and I take it out on the road to see how this engine feels in the real world and see if this second gen LZ0 Duramax feels different then the LM2 Duramax 3L
Unfortunately I do not have my trailer with me so there won't be any towing with this second gen Duramax engine just yet. But I can't wait to see this thing strapped with some good weight behind it to see how it performs.
I was very curious to see if the added horse power to this 3L diesel engine would be noticeable on the road in comparison to the first gen. and to my surprise the added power and torque GM gave to this 3L Duramax was actually super noticeable. it felt like this engine just had another gear when accelerating.
same like the first gen is the noise. I love the sound of an inline 6 diesel and this small 3L sounds pretty good. obviously not as loud as some of the much larger diesel engine I work on but still has that famous inline 6 diesel knock.
the other major thing about this 3L Duramax diesel engine is the fuel economy and wow is this thing efficient. getting almost 27mpg with me just messing around is very impressive for a truck that can tow over 13,000 lbs.
overall I really liked the way this 3L engine drives and this truck in general has a pretty good feel overall!
I hope you guys liked the video!

Amazing how GM went from nearly single handedly killing off the US passenger car/ truck diesel market in the US with the Oldsmobile 5.7 in the 70s to being the last manufacturer to offer a 1/2 ton diesel truck in the US.

The company ignored the worker and even fired him. Then he was proven right with the many issues that followed soon after

I went from a 5.3 to the LZ0 with maxtow. Thenew LZ0 walk away from a 5.3 unloaded. And pulling there is absolutely no comparison. Plus I’m getting right at 45% better fuel economy pulling a 9000lbs enclosed trailer. GM hit a home run with this one.

I see lots of comments about the exhaust brake and fuel economy. If youre familiar with The Fast Lane Truck they run their trucks through the "Ike Gauntlet" on I70 here in Colorado. I ran my LZ0 and 4,000lb trailer up and down that stretch of I70, 7% grade for 8 miles (13km). The exhaust brake controlled my descent with only 1 brake application. On the way up, i managed to maintain 65mph (105kpm) the entire stretch. Amazing engine. Fuel economy is out of this world, def consumption is a different story lol

I wrote a comment below, I drove 90 miles pulling 3000 total lbs at 70mph. I got 23 MPG, through the rolling hills of Iowa. I drove that same stretch with a 6.2L Chevy without a trailer and got 14MPG. After a week I've got 1k miles (not a normal amount for me) of towing, hauling with the bed and so forth. I would take this engine before the 6.2L and I drove the 6.2 since 2011.

Thanks for posting this! - I live in Southern BC. I stumbled across my 2022 LM2 model brand new, as a cancelled order at a dealership. I bought it on the spot (last year) but now was thinking of upgrading to the new interior (and getting the added LZO). Only thing about it is you can no longer get the 6 passenger format in the LT model with the goodies (like mine) with the diesel. I need this due to the size of our family. In the custom models you can get it still (with the older interior in the 2023 models) however can't get the max town pkg (NHT rpo code) with the diesel right now either - as of today anyway (just checked again). So I was a bit disappointed, however the fact is - I just LOVE the power plant in these 3.0 duramax's. The fuel economy is insanely good. Towing my 8800lb travel trailer, I still get 15mpg towing flat which is nuts if you think about it.

Way more power then my old Ram and better fuel economy both towing and regular driving without a trailer. Factory exhaust brake helps a lot too when towing (My Ram did not have this). I haven't noticed any excessive oil consumption however I do not tow far (200-250kms each way). The Ram was a good little truck, the AT4 1500 GMC with the LZO is even better. My cousin owns a 2023 F150 Powerboost, and I get better fuel economy head to head doing the same route.

I’ve towed lots with my LZ0 and it handled far better than my 2022 Toyota tundra at towing in the Rockies and elsewhere, only issue I’ve found is that if your gonna tow with it a lot be mindful of your oil level as you may need to add a quart as I had too after 1600 kms towing which is annoying but something I’m willing to live with because after the summer ends I don’t tow my camper around as much and the oil consumption is minimal under normal use and I can make it to my next oil change without adding oil.

@@swimers100 The only additional items are the fuel filter and the DEF. The computer will tell you when to change the filter, it’s usually around 30,000 but I plan on doing it on my next oil change at 20,000. Cheap insurance to keep the high pressure fuel rails clean. It’s easily accessible and only costs around $30 to order it, when you buy the actual GM part. I think the dealer charges a lot more. But it’s really easy. The other item I worry about is the quality of diesel I buy. I’ve heard good and bad from truck stops and local stations. I do buy from truck stops when traveling across country. When local ( most of my trips) I buy from reputable newer stations in the area. No issues yet. The DEF I buy from both Blue and the actual GM stuff. Make sure you look at the date code for the Blue and store it in a cool place. Dont buy from a place that stores it in the sun if you are in the warmer climate. I’m in the Chicago area. So in winter it’s in the garage, summer time it’s in the basement. But I usually only carry one or two extra containers. When not trailering, the tank full lasts a long time ( 5000-7000 miles) WHen towing it eats it pretty fast. But with the mileage I get I don’t care. You will love the truck. Like I noted above it’s a torque monster as compared to my Avalanche with the 5.3. And I do 40 mpg at 55-60mph on the flat highway. Towing a 7500 lbs RV, its double of the 5.3 (around 13-18) . But I’m pretty easy on the throttle. Oh one last thing, since it’s got a turbo, make sure when you start to give it some time to let the oil circulate to the turbo, lube the parts before you jump on it. Winter longer than summer. Also when I’m done , I’ll let the engine idle for a short time to let the oil circulate thru the hot turbo. When I’m trailering, I’ll leave it running when I get fuel. I never shut down if I’m on the move. Keeps the oil moving and cooling. Just some simple preventative measures to help it run long. All of this stuff I got from the forum and you tube owners with the same engine. This is my first diesel too, but no regrets. Well maybe the cost of the new trucks in this market. Sorry to be soooo chatty.

I have been watching many videos and have concerns with the fuel pump and drive belt to fix within GM's intervals etc and the price of diesel being par with regular gas plus the additives as where I life I can't buy the TOP TIER diesel as they state to use, never had a diesel so very unsure.

@slocavky
@slocavky 11 ай бұрын
Question. Since you're a diesel mechanic. What do you think the reason was for gm changing to steel pistons? On the LM2 I notice on mine I can hear some diesel fuel knock what some call it, on hard accel. BUT, after watching some videos from Power Proven Diesel here on youtube, they have that EXACT same sound due to the injection timing. Do you think GM went to steel so people wont hear that knock so easily?
@bullmoose8606
@bullmoose8606 11 ай бұрын
He talks about it on his Powerstroke video. Steel is stronger and expands less. So you can use less material and have tight tolerances in the cylinder which = +power / +Efficiency I’d like to see it on the big Dmax next go round
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 11 ай бұрын
I'm not an engineer by any standards but my guess as to why they went to a steel piston is because of strength and heat resistance. the piston material typically wouldn't correct any knocking (other then maybe piston slap). on this updated gen they have changed the fuel injectors and probably re-tuned the injection timing/flow. but to answer your question, no I don't think the steel piston were to quick to fuel knock.
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 11 ай бұрын
Ya those short steel pistons add a lot of strength, basicly meaning you can shove more air and fuel into the engine and not worry about cooking the top of the aluminum pistons
@patrickyoung5348
@patrickyoung5348 11 ай бұрын
Kind of a toss up between theses pistons and knock. The aluminum pistons had longer skits which normally more stability (less rocking) in the cylinders which would mean les slap. On the other hand if they closed the clearance between the steel pistons and the cylinders that could negate the potential of the shorter skirts to rock more. My gut say the material change had to do more with surviving the higher heat and stress of the improved performance numbers.

Towing capacity, payload capacity, fuel economy are the key features in a truck. LED lighting, cruise control, and a self-dimming rear view are nice options. Also, my dealer is 40 miles from home. So I need to load a compact tractor in a muddy field, put a couple of giant dogs in the back seat, and listen to a podcast streamed from my phone while I take a tractor in for service and stop in town for beer, groceries, and whatever my wife just txt'd me about - which could be a box of mochi and/or a ton of mulch. That is my complete list of requirements. Honestly, after Obama stole GM, I swore I would never touch a GM until the creditors were given justice. But, given my needs right now, the 3.0 1500 is a very appealing option. I'll never forgive the bastards, but I might buy one of their trucks. When I look at the GMC version- CCSB 3.23 4x4: 8800# CCSB 3.72 4x4 13,000# The question is: What is the mpg difference? I really only need 7,000# right now. But I'm looking at bale handlers and kinds sorta thinking 10,500# might be in my future. What will the 200,000 mile fuel cost be if I went for the max tow, but turned out to not actually need it?
